There are several reasons for this. Russia alone has built missile defenses (the S-400) better than anything we have. Russia has a big advantage in "tactical" nuclear weapons (the kind you would use on a battle field). Russia has supersonic sea-borne missiles that can take out our aircraft carriers. Russia has even built an underground city in the Ural mountains to protect its key assets in case of nuclear war. Russia's allies such as Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, and other Fidel-Castro imitators have risen to rule countries south of our border. Iran's Ahmadinejad decries capitalism and visits Russia when things get tough. And lets take China - it produces vast numbers of engineers and scientists, while we specialize in producing trial lawyers. As our economy tanks, other economies (like China) show impressive growth rates. Germany, which was sensible enough to elect a leader who doesn't believe in spending trillions of dollars on nonsense has a better standard of living than we do. And our demographic changes, as Bill Clinton pointed out, reduce the power of what he agreed was "the great right-wing conspiracy" (i.e. the vote of normal people who don't want their country bankrupted, like freedom of speech, association, and economic activity, etc.) So we vote in a left wing president who believes in redistributing the wealth etc. <br>The author of the article (Jamie Weinstein), has his heart in the right place, but he's way too optimistic.
