The "surge" was not successful in creating anything other than a stronger islamist state in Iraq- a strong Shiite ally of Iran. Islamic government is incompatible with freedom. Christians and secularists in Iraq have almost been eliminated. It was a complete waste of time and life in retrospect to do what we did in Iraq. It is likewise a complete waste of time and life to engage in Afghanistan since it will probably have a similar result at best.
We should pull out and let the Afghans, Iraqis and Pakistanis enjoy the fruits of Islam. They are generally totally intolerant of any other belief system, so why bother to get them a form of government (democracy) that they will soon reject as soon as we leave. This does not mean that we allow the Taliban/AlQuaeda free rein. We should establish impregnable military bases on Iraqi, Afghan and after its fall to the Taliban, denuclearized Pakistani territory and bomb the Taliban gangs back into the stone age where they belong every time they act up against their neighbors. We should strongly, (strongly enough til we are rid of them) encourage our local Islamists, as well as would be Muslim immigrants from other Islamic countries to go to those places to live so they too can enjoy the marvelous pure Islamic state under the Taliban.

Barack Obama could learn from Churchill, who said:

"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of victory. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, and only a small chance of survival."

In war, there can be no substitute for victory, victory at all costs, for the survival of western culture and freedom depends on victory.

I think the entire debate/discussion about Iraq/Afghanistan has long ago departed from first principles. The question should not be whether or not we defensively sandbag an enemy-besieged beachhead, but whether we are aggressively contributing to a war-winning strategy against a RECOGNIZED enemy. These two countries are centrally located, and strategically placed amidst a den of vipers--our enemies. We could have moved swiftly against Iran and Syria and successfuly intimidated other jihadi participants and supporters in Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. But almost immediately, we backed off after Cheney and Rumsfeld early-on threatened Syria and iraq but were then reversed by Bush with encouragement from Powell and the State Department crowd. Add to that our fundamental unwillingness to recognized the Islamic core of our opposition and our confusion of toleration for religious beliefs with imperialistic designs under religious cover, we are left with 2 holding actions and have fallen back in ideological confusion.

Now that we have hesitated and lost our direction and resolve, we are left with 2 solidly corrupt, Islam-based states that have in no way departed from their medieval origins, and will quickly return to their swamps when we leave. Pakistan will absorb Afghanistan, and Iraq will either merge interests with or become dominated by Iran. In both cases, our determined Islamic enemies have won. And what have we achieved? The US will be exposed as hopelessly confused and ineffectual--and now with Obama and company in charge, the Islamic block will have carte blanche to accellerate their assault on the US and the West generally.

No, forget this impotent wheel-spinning that passes for political analysis. We need Occams Razor here.
