What the religious ("Christian"?) left has never understood about Jesus Christ, is that He never advocated spending other people's money, regardless of on what one might want to spend it. HIs parable of the "Good Samaritan" featured the good deed doer taking money out of his own pocket to help the victimized Levite priest. It didn't have the Samaritan forming a committee to look into the hazards of pedestrian travel between towns in Judea, or submitting a bill to the Sanhedrin to collect more Temple "offerings" from the merchant class so that Levitical priests could travel with body guards, or shaming other passers-bye for their callousness, greed, racism, intolerance, or whatever other names he could think of to call them.

People who think like this, who think they are doing good when they manipulate others into giving to the needy, simply fail to understand the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. And that is a critical lack in anyone professing to be His disciple. That's like someone professing to be a disciple of Darwin, yet failing to grasp the concept of random mutation.

I am so thankful that the Methodist Church that I served in the N.J. Conference for 50 years as a pastor, and as an Air Force Chaplain, and have served in my present Sacramento,CA area , is attempting to make an important statement regarding the critical issues of our day, and especially the positions the Board of Church and Society . I feel that I am in limbo here in the N. California area because the U.Methodist Church is doing everything to push such areas as same sex marriages, abortion rights, and disregarding the Biblical message of Christ's atoning work.

President Ronald Reagan's resolute hawkishness and emancipatory eloquence saved the day for the free world.

On June 12, 1987, in front of the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, Reagan issued a challenge to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to make good on his promises of liberalization. "Come here, to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Reagan's supporters claim that this speech played a key role in sparking the events of 1989, but there's little evidence to back this up.

In fact, Reagan's words left little obvious imprint on the thinking of dissidents behind the Iron Curtain. The opposition movements in East Germany and Czechoslovakia were more peacenik than Grand Old Party; in Poland, Solidarity activists already had their own pope as a moral beacon. Neither the Washington Post nor the New York Times even ran Reagan's speech on the front page.

see the speech at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjWDrTXMgF8

A Christian's job is to speak the Truth and leave ruling the world to the sovereign God. He is not a god of smooze.
