The Xenon can be trapped under certain circumstances, but the only time this has been done successfully was in 1996 when the US detonated a tiny 0.38 kiloton device. To me DPRK-2009 cannot have been nuclear.

I agree Hampton was a programmer. His job was to synthesise the various data streams into an incontrovertible report that identified CTBT events, like DPRK-2009. In the end, the report wasn't incontrovertible, so he failed. It probably wasn't his fault, but he failed. He would very likely want to have a say in the discussions about what went wrong. Some people would very likely not want to have their failures dragged out into the open.

His wife is an IAEA inspector and would no doubt be subject to lots of security conditions if she wanted to speak out.

By my reading, it must have been nuclear. But there would be nothing career-brakeingly serious if one of the experts suggested it wasn't.

But Hampton appears to have been a programmer - so he'd have been unaffected anyway.

I think the family would be up in arms if he'd been murdered and would have set up a web-site. Most likely, a lot of people were already worried about his mental balance and nobody on the spot is greatly surprised.

If "under the hypothesis that this was a nuclear test" the outcome was irreconcilable, wouldn't someone suggest that this was NOT a nuclear test ? The conference in June jumped on that stupid idea, and anyone who gave it credence was laughed at - why ? 4,000 tonnes of TNT is a lot of explosives, but they operate coal mines in the area shifting millions of tonnes of coal, and are familiar with handling explosives. It would be the perfect cover for an announced nuclear test - there is nothing worse than a fizzle if you are grandstanding on the world stage.

So I don't see Hampton or the radio-Xenon people as having done anything wrong necessarily, it may well have been a non-nuclear explosion. Maybe Hampton was insisting on a non-nuclear explanation, which would put a lot of egg on a lot of professors' faces, and that's why he was taken for a walk up the stairs.

I think you're reading too much into the failure to detect the explosion by the Xenon method. That would probably be a big (but not fatal) set-back to the careers of people building and monitoring this equipment. But equipment or method failure doesn't seem to be an issue, no Xenon was detected because, in Hampton's words “it is concluded that the containment of any generated xenon (under the hypothesis that this was a nuclear test) was above 99.9 percent.” (Incidentally, this article cited is not at the link given, or indeed anywhere else on the web).

And, at least according to Hampton's bio quoted in your Peak-Oil article, he was not a nuclear/Xenon specialist, he was “part of the team maintaining and operating the IDC [International Data Centre] application software to generate and distribute products and services.” A programming failure would be unlikely to have stopped all those detectors reporting Xenon if there was any!

Lastly, if it was Hampton who made this immense boo-boo, I think we'd know by now. All the other people potentially in the loop would be pointing fingers at the dead man, claiming that their method was good, only one man's negligence caused a failure (hence, Xenon method good and expect perfect perfect results next time). And most likely his colleagues would be squawking if he was murdered – they'd hardly be happy to continue their work if one of their number had been rubbed out for it. OK, so government agents probably were involved in the death of David Kelly – but I can't see it in this case.

You have missed an important point. The CTBTO has to demonstrate its ability to detect nuclear explosions for the CTBT to be taken seriously. There are not many explosions to practice on, so the North Korean test in May 2009 was a great opportunity to showcase the technology. The result was a catastrophe - the seismic data showed a clear-cut nuclear explosion, but the radio-Xenon data says it wasn't nuclear at all. Its a total farce, and Tim Hampton was right in the middle of it. Ten years of his career goes up in smoke and he's not going to feel suicidal ? More at

This must be one of the first accusations at Iran that isn't ridiculous. Ahmadinejad never threatened to wipe Israel off the map and Iran has not attacked anyone for 270 years. But Iran does need defense from allies of the US such as Saddam (1 million dead) and Saudi and from the wars on their borders (Iraq now thought to be 1.2 million dead). An even bigger war about to erupt on another border, Pakistan. If they're trying to get nuclear weapons it's because they're in very great danger – if we want to stop them, there's a very easy solution – we guarantee their borders and safety.

What are the chances that, if discovered by MI-6 ( or other covert agencies ) to be a murder, it will go unreported in the news and simply handled by retaliation in private? I don't want to be naive but doesn't this happen quite frequently ( in regards to the retaliation of an ” agency ” murder )?
