In the future, everyone will be Hitler for fifteen minutes

Ingrid Bergman in "Gaslight" (1944)

I wish I could take credit for that line, but it was the fellow behind the now-defunct blog Beautiful Atrocities.

Sadly, I also can’t lay claim to the word “gaslighting,” a “form of intimidation or psychological abuse in which false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory and perception.”

Jamison Foser at Media Matters is among many left-leaning fellows auditioning for the Charles Boyer role these days. The latest left wing strategy (which, not coincidentally, resembles many another left wing strategy) is to try convincing millions of Americans that their memories, and the evidence of their senses, are utterly unreliable. That they, along with half the country… may be… going… craaaaaayyyyyzeeeee…

Today, Foser bashes conservative pundits, writing these words with (I’m obliged to assume) a perfectly straight face:

Barack Obama, they told us, was a racist and a socialist. A Stalinist. A Marxist and a Maoist. They claimed he reminded them of Mussolini and of Nixon (even getting a bunch of legitimate reporters to buy into that one). Not only that: He is just like Hitler.

But Godwin’s Law is not to be trifled with. Comparisons to Hitler tend to blow up in the speaker’s face, and this was no different. (…) These people aren’t right in the head.

But wait, there’s more. This week, both White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and now Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, both claimed to have no memory of anyone ever comparing President Bush to Adolph Hitler during the previous eight years. (In related news, both Gibbs and Whitehouse also asked for cheeseburgers when they finally emerged from their lengthy comas…)

I know you don’t need me to provide you with this, but I will anyway:
