Frontpage’s Man of the Year: Glenn Beck – by David Forsmark

The year of Obamarific “change” quickly became the year of dissent as Americans grew disillusioned with the “trillion here and a trillion there” spending of President Barack Obama even as unemployment rose. The so-called “Stimulus Package,” which promised to cap unemployment at 8%, did nothing to generate private sector jobs. The only area that seemed to be stimulated was joblessness, which soared above 10%.

Despite an economic disaster, the Democrats in Congress and the White House focused on socializing American health care and an economy-busting “cap and trade” scheme to hike energy taxes.  To top it off, it seemed every day brought revelations about radicals with unconscionable views who either held high offices in the new administration or were funded with taxpayer money.

Suddenly, the loudmouths of the Left and the poobahs of the Lame-Stream Media — who had deemed dissent to be “the highest form of patriotism” when George W. Bush occupied the White House — whistled another tune. They began savaging of opponents of the Obama regime as Nazis, racists and ignorant rubes. Their targets weren’t just public figures who stood in the way of their agenda; rather, they viciously attacked ordinary Americans, the tea partiers, to whom they gave a sobriquet (tea-baggers) that no network censors would have allowed just a few years ago.

For our Man of the Year issue, we justifiably could have taken the cheap and easy route (such as Time circa 2006) and said it was the year of the “ordinary citizen.” After all, the anti-Obama Tea Party movement shook the foundations of the political establishment this summer.

All of our nominees contributed mightily to the informed dissent that gave hope for the right kind of change in the next few election cycles. Here are the nominees:

Dick Cheney

Ex-Veep Cheney, the man most hated (and feared) by the Left, won every argument he picked with Obama, scoring huge in the public arena on Attorney General Eric Holder’s ridiculous persecution of the CIA staffers who interrogated suspected terrorists; and he has been effective in all other national security debates.  Almost as important as the vice president’s comeback is the emergence of daughter Liz Cheney as one of conservatism’s most articulate defenders.  If this award were for Family of the Year, the Cheneys would be the hands-down winners.

Andrew Breitbart

Orginally known as Matt Drudge’s lieutenant in compiling the still-essential Drudge Report, Breitbart became the most influential conservative figure on the Internet this year.  His smash hit site Big Hollywood immediately became a must-read on a daily basis, and he launched Big Government with the Story of the Year — the ACORN prostitution sting videos.  With more sites on the way, Breitbart will continue to be one of the brightest lights in the conservative movement.

Sarah Palin

Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008, deserves a slot on this list just for the self-revealing rage she generates with the liberal establishment. The former Alaska governor also is the most beloved figure among the ordinary people who are newly minted activists in the wake of Obama’s big government excess.  Is there any other person who can change the debate and the political lexicon with a mere Facebook entry?  Death Panel is certainly the phrase of the year.

Rush Limbaugh

One could make the case that Limbaugh has been the conservative MVP — most valuable player or politico — every year since 1994.  It’s doubtful Obama ‘s approval rating would be under 50% and Obamacare would hover at about 60% disapproval without El  Rushbo. Instead of a routine annual update on Rush’s contribution to the debate, however, it’s time to just name the trophy after him and move on.

And the winner is…

Glenn Beck

Whether you love him or hate him, or consider him to be a must-see TV or DVR necessity, radio and TV talker Beck is a bright new star in the conservative firmament. You might get fired up by his calls to action or wince at his emotional outbursts – you even might tune in today only to see if this is when his head finally explodes—but you have to admit, this was the Year of the Beck.

In the past 12 months, Beck rose from hosting an obscure TV show on CNN Headline News to a terrible time slot on Fox News’ cable juggernaut.  Regardless, his show at 5 p.m. became a ratings smash hit and attracted direct angry response from the White House.

Beck’s show now attracts a far bigger audience than his competitors on CNN, MSNBC and Headline News combined. In fact, he doesn’t really have any competition – on any given day, Beck can attracts 20 times the audience of Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC.

This, indeed, was the Year of the Beck. In NBA terms, Limbaugh is the 30-points-per game superstar with several championship rings, who last year played for an otherwise pathetic team.  Beck is the team’s rookie draft pick who exceeded expectations and brought fresh energy that caught the other team flat-footed and changed the game.

Beck is such a major part of the political landscape today that it’s hard to remember he was still a minor factor just a year ago. Sure, his books sold very well, and his radio show was making a move to the top tier of the market; but during the 2008 election, the Left and the MSM were not sneering and using the term, “Limbaugh/Hannity /Beck,” and Obama was not calling him out by name.

In one short year, the epithet has become “Limbaugh/Beck/Palin,” and the White House is responding defensively.

Beck made the cover of Time magazine, was one of Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People of 2009″ and makes an almost nightly appearance as one of Keith Olbermann’s “Worst People in the World.” (A great honor, no doubt.)

Probably no other broadcaster in any medium is as in tune with the feisty mood of the times.  While other talk show hosts certainly connect with the Tea Partiers, and I’m sure the vast majority of them listen to Limbaugh and watch a certain amount of Hannity, no media figure has the direct connection to the Tea Party dissidents that Glenn Beck enjoys.  No one.

Only Sarah Palin gets that kind of love from the crowds that have House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shaking in fear, and making up wild accusations on the while the cameras roll.

In his rookie year on live television, Beck has the White House reeling. He already has two major scalps dangling from his lance—self-proclaimed communist Van Jones, the green jobs czar, and White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, a devout fan of Maso Tse-Tung.

Leftist Cass Sunstein, the proposed “Regulatory Czar” who puts animal rights on a par with human rights,  and  Keith Jennings, a pedophilic Activist ironically named as Obama’s “Safe Schools Czar,” are also in his sights. While Breitbart deserves the lion’s share of the credit if ACORN goes down, no one has supplied more context on the community activist/con job organization and its tentacles into the Obama a Administration than Beck.

So where does Beck go from here?  His meteoric rise in 2009 will be a tough act to follow.  He obviously cannot again increase his TV audience tenfold — that would put him in “Who Shot J.R.” territory.  He has gained an audience and, for now, seems to be holding it.

The cheap and easy analysis would be to suppose that Beck’s emotional approach will wear on the audience or he will burn out.  However, as I learned when reviewing Beck’s latest bestseller, Arguing with Idiots, (still sitting at No. 3 as of this writing), Beck’s antics may draw people in, but there is a deep well of substance behind his act.

Beck, to be sure, is a performer and a showman.  He takes risks, and enough of them pay off to make up for his small mistakes.  Beck is attuned to the times, perfectly situated to benefit from the Obama backlash.  However, he has the substance for the long haul.

Whether 2010 is another Year of the Beck, or not, it is poised to be a comeback year for conservatism.  If it is, then Glenn Beck will have been a major part of the reason — and my bet is that is what will matter most to him.

We would still be fighting WW2 if we betrayed our allies like Bush did. The failures of the Iraq and Afghanistan policies were created on his watch.

Don't be bashing Obama for his triumps when Bush has none.

We will never know for sure without Senator Franken's vote. I'm he would have nominated “Pat“ O'Reilly for U.S. traitor of the year as well.

But Franken would also limit Forsmark's Opinion so that he dosen't drag this debate into the next century.

The same thing was true of Limbaugh when he started out. It took him a while to get his intellectual legs under him, or perhaps to develop a staff that could give him the information he needed to be the force he is now.

What makes Beck different is that he admits that he was a lightweight at the beginning, while Rush always touts how correct and informed he is. Beck still says that he has a lot to learn. This makes him likely to continue to improve. He also has a good back up team, including Pat Gray, who I am familiar with from his time on Houston area radio. He is smart and funny, with a great set of vocal skills.

I would not underestimate Beck's potential.

I'm not always a fan of Beck's antics/act (aka STYLE) but nobody can deny the enormous value of information Glenn provides daily. His books are a storehouse of fact and truth and it will be these along with Common Sense that help reestablish conservative on the path to Freedom, Liberty and Happiness.

  18. JudyBeth says:

Glenn Beck is America's “Everyman” symbol, because he has used his God-given “smarts” to become a self-educated, well-informed everyday CITIZEN who sincerely speaks “for and to” Americans from his heart-felt love of our America.

As a former World/American History & Civics teacher, I am troubled that the youth of today who will become some of the leaders in the future are so uninformed. Glenn Beck encourages every Mom, Dad, Grandparent, Uncle, Aunt and “brave educator”, and Youth of today to “Question Boldly and Speak Fearlessly” and learn “The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution” so they understand the Founding Fathers who literally gave their lives to insure America's principles, based on Judeo-Christian values of law and order and guaranteed rights and freedoms for the individual, WILL (should) endure through every trial, assault, and outright attack from enemies of FREEDOM.

Glenn Beck speaks directly to the people and challenges all of us to be involved and become educated in every way possible so we can protect our liberties now and for tomorrow. He's a great choice for FrontPageMag “Man of the Year”. Every “common sense” person and true conservative can and should “Thank Beck” for enlightening and awakening us from complacency. We must “Never Give Up or Give In” to the “Big Government Knows Best” mentality of DC and the Adm of the POTUSA! NEVER! Thank-you. JudyBeth

  19. cottonman says:

Good choice & Beck has worked long hours just to bring corruption to the Obama run media. I hope you have informed him of his award so that it will encourage him to continue forward through the 2010 & 2012 elections because Americans are fed up with the courrpt system.

For anyone who enjoys reading a political thriller, I just read a new, underground book just out about a small town in America that stands up to federal tyranny & corrupt politicians & ends up starting the 2nd American Revolution. It could be our hometown. Anyway, it's perfect for 2010 & what's coming at us. I recommend it.

  21. johncarens says:

Movement-style conservatives need to keep a wary eye on Beck. He has a populist-flavored tinge that could be the idea-germ that will destroy the ability of conservatives to govern again for a generation.

By this, I mean that he seems to be a “Pox on Both Your Houses” type, that could encourage the Tea Party Americans to branch out on their own, and siphon votes from the Republican Party, as a sort of neo-Perot movement. And we all know how effective THAT was. Bill Clinton, call your office.

Rather, it is plain that, in order to govern, Conservatives need to invade the Republican Party, take it over, and recolonize it the way Reagan and Laxalt did in the late 1970's. In 1977, Reagan said something along the lines of “not wanting a third party, but a revitalized New Republican Party, a Conservative Republican Party”. This is the way to win, not by taking your football and going home. Beck seems to enjoy jostling the wet cement of politics, and watching were it settles out.

Further, Beck plagiarizes broad swaths of his commentary from true conservative lights such as Mark Levin without attribution (for example, Levin was talking about Cass Sunstein and the pumped-up 45 million-Americans-without-health-insurance bit over a year ago, items Mr. Levin discovered through vigorous research).

I hope that solid conservatives such as Sarah Palin are not persuaded by this Beck-flavored crap that Republicans and Democrats are one in the same, with nary a shade of difference between them. We must kick the “moderate” (read “liberal”) elements out of the party, make it an institution of thoroughgoing, traditional conservatism, and then set out to destroy the Democrat party. Pure and simple. I am not sure Glen Beck is much of a Pied Piper on this score. Sorry.

It really all boils down to common sense and Glenn is loaded with it. “We the People” ARE judge and jury when it comes to our representitives in Washington. They will be reminded of that fact in 2010. Keep up the great work my brother.

  34. USMCSniper says:

This needs a massive movement to make it law of the land.

The Enumerated Powers Act (H.R. 1359) would require all legislation introduced in Congress to “contain a concise and definite statement of the constitutional authority” empowering Congress to enact it.[1] Bills lacking such a statement or containing one of questionable merit would be subject to challenge by point of order, a procedural device to delay consideration until the problem is corrected or the objection overruled.

For a Congress that routinely disregards the Constitution's limits on its powers, however, the Act would hardly be innocuous. Indeed, it would empower those few Members of Congress willing to stand up and call attention to Congress's routine disregard of the Constitution's division of powers, especially its limitations on federal power. No wonder, then, that the proposal, introduced each session by Representative John Shadegg (R–AZ) since 1995, has gone precisely nowhere and makes its first appearance in the Senate, courtesy of Senator Tom Coburn (R–OK), only this year (S. 3159).

  35. Steven Brady says:

I take it, by what you have said, that you define “Fascism” as “journalism that is not controlled by the State”, is this so?

Since Mr. Bushlikesdick hasn't reported in, yet, I thought that I might give you a little guidance on your spelling, in the spirit of being fair and balanced:

The word “your”, used in the context of your post, is obviously a contraction, and should have been spelled, “You're still …”. If this is too difficult, you could use the two words separately, as in “You are still …”.

If you can accept this friendly correction, then we can move on with the discussion …

… By the way, what was so funny?

  36. Steven Brady says:

I hope that the Enumerated Powers Act can be enacted, at some point in the future. However, there will have to be a new majority in Congress and a new President to make it a reality. From the quality of your posts, I'm sure that you already know this.

God knows that I would fight for this Act with every resource at my disposal, if it were only possible.

  37. ndbltwy says:

My God an English major I have the worse luck. Beck and corporate America are using the teaparty crowd for their own means. Murdoch goes to bed each night wondering why he bought the money losing Wall Street Journal when his cash cow is FOX News and the gullible audiance that believes whatever they hear without question.

  38. bs61 says:

Too funny! His arrogance and talking down to American's doesn't really make him classy in my eyes! Or is he lacking grace?

  39. bs61 says:

What overwhelming evidence of global warming? I've seen nothing but fudged numbers and emails and cold temperatures. I've been around long enough to remember the first earth crisis and scare tactics, none of which came true. Just follow the money on who stands to gain it, then decide if you still believe. And I'd advise your leaders to start walking, biking and scaling back instead taking private planes and SUV's to Copenhagen – hypocritical!

  40. bs61 says:

So if you are Canadian – don't you mind that they do a lottery to see who will win a chance at seeing the doctor? Don't you have a problem with all of the Dentists closing up their practice for the last quarter of the year because they're out of money.

  41. bs61 says:

You're in good company on that list, so nothing to fear!

  42. bushlikesdick12 says:

That would make the Iraqi and Afghanistan war illegal — there are no grounds for war against countries that have not threatened our national security. The acts of individuals in a militia that knows no political borders creates a problem for your so-call solution to an intrusive government.

Your big oil constituents would have a huge problem with that sense our foreign wars are safely construed as efforts to control and safeguard natural resources for the purpose of our corporations to profit from.

This is why many of you consider alternative energy policies “unconstitutional”!

You can't have it both ways.

    re: definition of a troll:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[2]

and where do you fit in that definition?

At least I'm on the topic most of the time! I can't say that for you.

The Quote: “get a ruler and measure it for me”

    Ted Haggard
Leader of the National Association of Evangelicals
    (November 2006)

The Crime: Paying male prostitutes for sex and snorting crystal meth.

The Hypocrisy: A powerful force in the evangelical movement, Haggard participated in weekly meetings with President George Bush and top advisors where he gave spiritual advice. He taught that homosexuality was an abomination and actively lobbied against gay rights.

The Quote: “I did not have a homosexual relationship with a man in Denver.”

The Hypocrisy: Craig twice voted against adding the words “sexual orientation” to the federal hate crimes law. Craig also voted to give states the right to refuse to recognize gay marriage–a right they already had, but the Senator wanted to really, really prove he didn’t like gay people.

The Quote: “I am not gay, I don’t do these kinds of things.”

The Hypocrisy: Allen was one of 21 Florida legislators to sign Gov. Jeb Bush’s friend-of-the-court brief supporting the state’s ban on gays adopting children, and he co-sponsored an unsuccessful bill that would have enhanced penalties for “offenses involving unnatural and lascivious acts” such as indecent exposure.

The other young man woke up in the middle of the night to find Murphy giving him mouth-to-penis resuscitation. After this incident, a 1998 sexual battery report came to light in which Murphy was alleged to have done the exact same thing.

The Hypocrisy: Murphy was a well-paid political consultant for Republican candidates and often advised them to use gay marriage as a wedge issue to paint their opponents as out of touch with traditional values.

The Quote: “I was in the Sound of Music in High School…don’t ask” (from his now-defunct Myspace page.)

12/01/2009 at 8:27 amTop 10 Democrat Sex Scandals in Congress
    10/03/2006

Information compiled from the Washington Post, “Congressional Sex Scandals in History,” and other sources.

    10. Sen. Daniel Inouye. The 82-year-old Hawaii Democrat was accused in the 1990s by numerous women of sexual harassment. Democrats cast doubt on the allegations and the Senate Ethics Committee dropped its investigation.

    9. Former Rep. Gus Savage. The Illinois Democrat was accused of fondling a Peace Corps volunteer in 1989 while on a trip to Africa. The House Ethics Committee decided against disciplinary action in 1990.

    8. Rep. Barney Frank. The outspoken Massachusetts Democrat hired a male prostitute who ran a prostitution service from Frank’s residence in the 1980s. Only two Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to censure him in 1990.

    7. Former Sen. Brock Adams. The late Washington Democrat was forced to stop campaigning after numerous accusations of drugging, assault and rape, the first surfacing in 1988.

    6. Former Rep. Fred Richmond. This New York Democrat was arrested in 1978 for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old. He remained in Congress and won re-election—before eventually resigning in 1982 after pleading guilty to tax evasion and drug possession.

    5. Former Rep. John Young. The late Texas Democrat increased the salary of a staffer after she gave in to his sexual advances. The congressman won re-election in 1976 but lost two years later.

    4. Former Rep. Wayne Hays. The late Ohio Democrat hired an unqualified secretary reportedly for sexual acts. Although he resigned from Congress, the Democratic House leadership stalled in removing him from the Administration Committee in 1976.

    3. Former Rep. Gerry Studds. He was censured for sexual relationship with underage male page in 1983. Massachusetts voters returned him to office for six more terms.

    2. Former Rep. Mel Reynolds. The Illinois Democrat was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault with a 16-year-old. President Bill Clinton pardoned him before leaving office.

    1. Sen. Teddy Kennedy. The liberal Massachusetts senator testified in defense of nephew accused of rape, invoking his family history to win over the jury in 1991.

12/03/2009 at 12:55 pmFunny you went back as far as 1978 to pull out 10. Also, last check, Dems are not the “morals” party or the “God only loves us” party. It wouldn’t be an issue in my eyes at all if those were not a political dog and pony show of the GOP.

12/04/2009 at 10:57 amHere’s how you miss the point: Many a Republican, and specifically many of the conservatives caught in the gay sex scandals, are people who have crusaded against gay rights, have held out homosexuality to be “deviant” and “a sin,” and promoted a general sex-negative agenda including insistence on abstinence as the only sexual option outside monogamous heterosexual marriage. And THEN they do this shit.

The scandals you point out represent deplorable behavior, yes. But John’s point was not that only Republicans are guilty of sexual misconduct. His point was, they crusade for a rigid, horrible and intolerant sexual “morality” that they do not, themselves, live behind closed doors. Of public rest room stalls.

So your response to John’s point, which may be paraphrased as “Republican anti-sex crusaders are repressed hypocrites,” amounts to, “Nah-nah, Democrats can be sexual criminals and/or weasels too!” Which, while true, misses John’s point.

Also, how the hell did you miss Gary Condit during that little research project of yours?

12/07/2009 at 6:23 amBarney Frank – Democrat – U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1981 to present. Admitted to having paid Stephen L. Gobie, a male prostitute, for sex and subsequently hiring Gobie as his personal assistant. Gobie used the congressman’s Washington apartment for prostitution. A move to expel Frank from the House of Representatives failed and a motion to censure him failed.

James McGreevey – Democrat – New Jersey Governor . Admitted to having a gay affair. Resigned after allegations of sexual harassment, rumors of being blackmailed on top of fundraising investigations and indictments.

Rev Jesse Jackson – Democrat – Democratic candidate for President. Admitted to having an extramarital affair and fathering a illegitimate child.

    They are all criminals anyways!

12/08/2009 at 5:10 pmI really think that you miss the point. The problem isn’t a sexual indescretion, as long as it’s legal, but rather the hypocrisy of someone who rails against others for doing the same thing that he’s guilty of.

Barney Frank is an avowed homosexual and has never hidden the fact. That he got caught up in the shenanegans of his housemate is unfortunate, even if it is somewhat predictable for a man as busy as he is to not notice what’s going on in a house that he merely sleeps. I believe that’s why so many stay-at-home moms get away with cheating on their husbands so easily.

There was also never any claim that he was personally involved in the scandal. The man obviously took advantage of Mr. Frank.

Another website mentions a Republican state congresswoman who also was involved in the same type of scandal regarding an employee of hers and I thought it was unfair to criticize her for it.

12/08/2009 at 6:51 pmYeah, but most Democrats aren’t against GAY RIGHTS. The point is the hypocrisy. Not the fact that they had sex.

12/01/2009 at 12:12 pmUmm why do we group ourselves? Like, why do we either gotta be hard-ass republicans or anything-and-all-goes democrats? I identify with neither party, personally. I feel like democrats will accept anyone and anything as long as it’s from the democratic party. I used to identify with democrats, but … I’m seeing that democracy has its own form of corruption and problems. Why not just go with what sounds right to YOU, regardless of where it’s coming from?

In your defense, you are headed in the correct direction, just as long as it isn’t to the right.

12/04/2009 at 2:20 pmAn excellent comment on the hypocrisy of the so-called “moral majority”, who have all the moral fiber of a sociopath. In a recent letter published by UVA’s Cavalier Daily, I pointed out the hypocrisy of the National Marriage Project which is run by W. Bradford Wilcox. The NMP conducts research on marriage, but completely ignores the issue of gay marriage, while also claiming to be nonpartisan and nonsectarian. The NMP tactic is painfully obvious: Stifle the debate on gay marriage by simply not talking about it. This is intellectual hypocrisy at it’s worst guise. When will the Republican Party realize that fanatical Social Conservatism is contrary to the fundamental American ideals of Freedom of Speech and Religon.

And grace? What lack of grace are you referring to?
