Obama’s Arizona Betrayal

Posted by Bio ↓ on Aug 5th, 2010 Comments ↓

Madame Secretary might want to talk to Pinal County, Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu who is so angry with the government because of the DoJ lawsuit challenging the Arizona immigration law that he was recently quoted as saying, “Our own government has become our enemy and is taking us to court at a time when we need help.”

Referring to the BLM signs that dot the countryside in his county, Babeu said:

What’s very troubling is the fact that at a time when we in law enforcement and our state need help from the federal government, instead of sending help they put up billboard-size signs warning our citizens to stay out of the desert in my county because of dangerous drug and human smuggling and weapons and bandits and all these other things and then, behind that, they drag us into court with the ACLU.

Statistics are meaningless when you’re the one on the front lines fighting to hold back the relentless human tide, but perhaps Sheriff Babeu is referring to the fact that 17% of illegal immigrants crossing the border have criminal records. That alone should rouse the federal government from its stupor because up to 30% of illegals do not stay long in the state in which they cross the border, fanning out across the country where the criminal element among them continues their lives of crime — to the detriment of the life and property of residents in non-border states.

As if the problem of illegal immigration isn’t bad enough, add the extraordinary bloody and violent drug wars being waged in border states of Mexico and some of that bloodletting is bound to spill over into the US. And part of that crossover violence is hitting home in Maricopa County, Arizona where the drug lords are apparently targeting Sheriff Joe Arpaio for execution:

On the day parts of Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070, went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news for another reason: there’s a price on his head – allegedly offered by a Mexican drug cartel.

The audio message in Spanish is a bit garbled, but the text is clear.

It’s offering $1 million for Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s head and $10,000 for anyone who wants to join the Mexican cartel

Arapio has been at the center of the immigration debate for years, given that many of his enforcement techniques were adapted for inclusion in SB 1070. It’s clear that Sheriff Joe has struck a nerve with the cartels and is a threat to their operations.

One wishes that the federal government were an equal threat to the freedom of the drug gangs, the smugglers, the kidnappers, and others who cross the border with impunity. Alas, even when President Obama promises action, he drags his feet in implementation.

Consider the president’s promise to send 1,200 National Guardsmen to the border. What he didn’t mention when he made that announcement was that the feds were going to take their own sweet time in getting things organized.

The president made the deployment announcement on May 25. The promised date that the Guard would begin their assistance was August 1. The problem is that no one told the border states that the feds were guestimating  when they made that promise:

The National Guard, which officials had announced would turn out en masse along the U.S.-Mexico border over the weekend for sentry duty, was nowhere to be found Sunday.

It turns out it will take weeks longer to select, screen and train the 1,200 National Guard troops the Obama administration had said would be deployed on Aug. 1 along the border from California to Texas.

Administration officials explained that the announced date was always a starting point, the beginning of the process of deployment and not the day soldiers would begin massing at the boundary line.

“Full deployment will take place over succeeding weeks,” Janet Napolitano, the secretary of homeland security, said in an interview. “It won’t be 100 percent showing up all of a sudden.”

It seems a certainty that the federal government does not see what is happening on the US border as a crisis.

So while Obama and the feds twiddle their thumbs and accuse pro-immigration enforcement activists of being racists, Washington’s only real response to the crisis has been to sue the one state that has said “enough” to federal inaction and has taken matters into its own hands to protect its citizens.

In this one instance, President Obama is letting a genuine crisis go to waste.

Nuevo Laredo isn't in Texas. The city in the United States is called Laredo. Its city government has posted no message on Facebook warning citizens to stay indoors. The linked Michelle Malkin article, which largely dwells on an imaginary invasion of the United States, is at least clear about the basic geography.

BLM has not said 1/6th of the area of AZ is dangerous to travel. The signs you refer to bear on a small area of the Sonoran National Monument south on the Interstate, not the whole state south of the Interstate. Tucson, Yuma, Douglas, Sierra Vista, Nogales, etc, have not been declared dangerous by BLM. People still move about freely.

The invective of the Pinal Co. Sheriff isn't evidence that "Madame Secretary" is wrong about anything. He is a demagogue, and his fifteen minutes are about up.

    • Rifleman says:

Sheriff Joe's 15 minutes have lasted over 10 years now, what makes you think they're about up?

    • Stephen D. says:

"The signs you refer to bear on a small area of the Sonoran National Monument south on the Interstate, not the whole state south of the Interstate."
Irrelevant. One sign is one too many. Feet draging in order to introduce a "compreshensive immigration reform" instead of immediately shutting down the border is tantamount to treason of the highest order from the highest seat in the land. Disgraceful action of betrayal.
How do you come to defend such inaction you dolt?

    • blotto says:

Apparently KHK you see no problem with our border or illegal immigration, eh? The upwards of 12 million people are here illegally? That they consume welfare, health care and other dollars while not being Americans is okay? That states which have unfettered illegal immigration activity such as CA, AZ, NM, IL, NY are all coincidently in the red budget wise? That prisons are full of illegals costing the taxpayer more money is okay with you?

That you lefties cry about us targeting jihadists for assassination but are okay with one of our own law enforcement personnel being targeted?

Again you lefiies only think and speak this way because you know you face no consequences for the dopey things you think and say.

Oh, btw, define and differentiate demagogue as it relates to the sheriff and Obama.

    • jeff says:

read the text before you comment on it. It says nuevo laredo in mexico.so in other words screw national security.were being invaded and traitors like you are part of the problem.

    • 4 Common Sense says:

Your minutes are UP. We call people like you in my industry as twisting the truth. You tell particle truth but not all the truth. These signs that you refer to are Government Signs. Warning American Citizens Not to travel through this area. I really don't care if it is only 100 feet into Arizona soil. It is still a threat on the people of the U.S. Don't be foolish. It is still an invasion into our country. It isn't Mexico's. Your wording is not very good. You need to go back to English 101. Try looking at the Constitution, Article 3, Sec. 2, Clause 2. Then after that flip back a few pages to Article I, Sec. 10. You will plainly see that the Judge (Susan Bolton) had NO authority or standing to rule on that AZ law. Moreover, that fool in our D.O.J. Eric Holder filed the federal government's lawsuit against AZ. in a court that has NO authority or standing to hear the case.

You come off very ignorant about what the Constitution really says. Know what the law actually says before you open your mouth.

    • My goodness. The article says Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. You must have skimmed the article and had an overwhelming desire to try and find mistakes. You didn't find any so you made them up. The sheriff you refer to has been re-elected time and time again. You are so woefully inept on your facts and it seems as if you just started reading and watching the news when Obama got elected.

  2. The problem is the drug war, not illegal immigration. Banning substances always results in murder and mayhem. Our grandparents were smart enough to repeal Prohibition resulting in the largest single year drop in murder rates ever recorded.

When will we be as smart as our grandparents?

    • 4 Common Sense says:

Yes, you are right. We just traded a drop in murders for a rise in drunk drivers killing innocent American Citizens. Last year the death tole was 50,000 Nation wide. Great trade off. Do they really let you out during the daylight?

      • Reason_For_Life says:

In 2008 the total drunk driving deaths were 11,773 and is lower now than ever before.

Common Sense, have a beer and chill out.

    • TLH says:

Stop the almost unimpeded illegal immigration FIRST and this will localize the drug wars on the othe side of the border. Might as well lift the ban on C4 in the hope that this will stop the murder and mayhem and thus drop the murder rate caused from plastic explosives.

My wife and I have traveled outside the US many times. The latest time this year. We when to Toronto, Canada. I am a registered gun owner. I was questioned unkindly by the Canadian Border Officer, about whether I had a gun on me. Coming back into the US at the Detroit crossing, I was told the computer had flag my wife and I. We had to open up our vehicle, go into a another building, and wait. During this process three officer talk to my wife and me, I ask officer why the US was the only country to treat it's citzens so badly. He informed me, so you would feel safe. I told him I don't feel safer being treated badly. Was can you say about a Country that gives a free pass to criminals and treats its non-criminals citizen so badly

    • Tryon says:

Canada is a dying nation. What else IS there to be said? It has to import its next generation from the third world like a boatload of green bananas. It envies the US with its southern border and its inexhaustible supply of cheap labor and new citizenry.

  4. sebyandrew says:

1/6 of the land area of Arizona is dangerous to travel, according to the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM has posted signs along an 80 mile stretch of road encompassing I-8 warning against hiking or traveling along the southern side of the interstate. Pinal County Sherriff Paul Babeu, was quoted as saying, “We do not have control of this area.”

Ok you AZers is the 1/6 figure roughly correct? If a strip south of the interstate is declared dangerous does it not stand to reason that all that is south to the border is dangerous whether explicitly stated or not? BTW, who is it that moves freely? One could move freely but is it safe to do so?

    • KHX says:

One other muddle: the signs aren't posted along an 80-mile stretch of road, but in a discrete area off a road 80 miles from the border. The concern is that they're in the interior, not that they're along a long stretch of road. (When the signs first became an issue, the focus was on a small area on the border in the Buenos Aires NWR, but it emerged that the signs there had been put up some years ago, during the Bush Administration.)

The area of concern is the Vekol valley, which accounts for a fraction of a percent of the state's land area. (It's true the BLM signs weren't explicit about this. They also don't explicitly limit the warning to AZ, but nobody insists they warn people off southern CA.)

The 1/6 figure refers to the area south of I-8 plus the area south of I-10 east from I-8's terminus outside Casa Grande. (The signs didn't mention I-10, but never mind.) BLM has since clarified the signs' meaning for anyone who was genuinely confused.

ICE's Mission Melt: Agents Vote 'No Confidence' in Leadership
By Janice Kephart, August 4, 2010
    http://www.cis.org/kephart/ICE-mission-melt-1

“In an unprecedented move within the Department of Homeland Security, the special agents responsible for enforcing our nation's immigration laws issued an exhaustive, scathing letter simply titled "VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN ICE DIRECTOR JOHN MORTON AND ODPP ASSISTANT DIRECTOR PHYLLIS COVEN" on June 11, 2010. The letter, acquired through sources, provides a litany of examples of how ICE's mission is being skewed towards supporting an unflinching goal of amnesty by refusing to allow agents to do their job; allowing criminal aliens to roam free; depleting resources for key enforcement initiatives that preceded this administration; and misrepresenting facts and programs, demeaning the extent of the criminal alien problem and geared to support amnesty.”

  7. Postagoras says:

"That drop in crime is the result of a huge increase in the number of federal, county and state law enforcement personnel patrolling the state."

So Obama's "betrayal" is that the huge increase in the number of law enforcement personnel, including federal, has not immediately fixed the problem.

And, with that huge increase, the number of violent attacks on border patrol agents is increasing… hmmmm, more law enforcement personnel, more violent attacks. Well, duh.

Seems like everyone knows this is a problem, and we are in the middle of fixing it. It's not fixed yet. What's the scandal?

  8. RickTorn says:

Obama is refusing to uphold immigration laws … laws he swore to uphold, The purpose for his malfeasance is political. He has used the politics of class envy and color to divide this country. You might be right. Armed and dangerous may be the only way to survive when society collapses and the black thug gangs and white trash gangs are roaming the countryside like armed marauders. Like the lady said, " I would rather have a gun and not need it than not have one when I need it!" Also, learn how to use weapons well. One shot one kill at greater than 500 meters from a concealed position works just fine for me. A sniper video you weill like. http://www.viddler.com/explore/jpozadzides/videos…

  13. tom says:

Another part of the problem is that the law suit that the feds brought against AZ is faulty.
    The United States Constitution,
    Article III
    Section 2
    Paragraph 3
"In all cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, AND THOSE IN WHICH A STATE SHALL BE A PARTY, THE SUPREME COURT SHALL HAVE ORIGINAL JURISDICTION."
Sounds like Judge Bolton should have thrown the case from her court, according to the Constitution.

  14. studakota says:

All over the USA, on restricted, fenced in sites, there are warning signs attached to those fences which state, in no uncertain terms, that if I, a US citizen, or anyone, enters the proscribed area they "May be met with deadly force" for doing so. Doesn't bother me, for I know I'll not be climbing those fences, to test their accuracy, or on a drunken dare, or for any other stupid reason. And I'm not offended that my country would, maybe, kill me as I know it's for the security of my country. But put signs like that up along our southern border and the liberal, America last, factions, who call themselves citizens, would go crazy. Most Mexicans can't read English so print the signs in Spanish, but do it ,and mean it, you cross that border and you'll be met "With Deadly Force".

    • donald buckley says:

Dear friend: let's simplify the matter. It's about votes. Let's say that there are about 15,000,000 illegal aliens within the United States. Let's say that they are given amnesty and then citizenship. It is believed that they are more prone to support a Democratic candidate. That cancels out fifteen million Republican votes. And that story is about nullifying your vote. Simple!

  15. Haywood Jablome says:

cartel members should be killed plain and simple however i like the poor immagrants who come to work here. we all know this is a capitalistic country n they just make it easier for me to do good. The illegals can be the poor, and the citizens can be the rich. N they cant rise up either cuz there not even suppose to be here n that would just be stupid.
