In sum, [the] academic disinterest in my work is not a personal matter, but the expression of a political fact. It is a reflection of the ideological debasement of our institutions of knowledge by a movement whose hallmarks are narcissisitic self-absorption and intellectual intolerance, and whose attacks on tradition, objectivity and intellectual standards are already the stuff of legend. The effect of these attitudes on academic archives is a systematic amnesia about the efforts, thoughts and recollections of ex-radicals and conservative rivals like myself.
This is neither the place nor the occasion to examine the vast lacunae in our historical memory bank resulting from the political agendas of this lamentably ideological generation of academics. I draw attention to these facts because they may help to explain the creation of [Left Illusions] as an effort to establish some details of a record that might otherwise have been lost. I only wish I could do the same for the many other conservative intellectuals not as fortunate as I to have this opportunity, whose work suffers neglect because of the indiscreet choice they made in lending their intellectual talents to the service of freedom in the last half of the 20th Century, instead of to the destructive fantasies of the socialist cause.
