Glenn Beck spent last weekend’s ‘Restoring Honor’ rally asking people to seek God, and now the media wants to make him a false religious leader. About every news outlet spent this past week writing about Beck as some new kind of new minister of the Right. Most took to comparing Beck’s brand of Mormonism with President Obama’s brand of Christianity. Only USA Today had the chutzpah to compare Beck to Obama’s controversial spiritual mentor, Jeremiah Wright.
USA Today‘s Cathy Lynn Grossman wrote an article last Monday with a title that would turn most heads: “Is Glenn Beck the new Jeremiah Wright, an angry prophet?“ That question is ridiculous for many reasons.
First of all, what in the world has Glenn Beck said that could be compared to any of the vile hate that Jeremiah Wright has spewed? I’m confused. When did Beck ever say anything like these quotes from Reverend Wright:
We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands [who died on 9/11] in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.
-Wright on 9/16/01
The government gives [black people] the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people! God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human! God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme!
- Wright in 2003 sermon.
Them Jews aren’t going to let him [Obama] talk to me. I told my baby daughter that he’ll talk to me in five years when he’s a lame duck, or in eight years when he’s out of office.
- Wright in 2009 interview.
I challenge anyone at USA Today to find one quote like that by Beck.
