“An earthquake has shaken the region.”
The above headline from an Israeli newspaper describes with unfailing accuracy the pivotal events now taking place in the Middle East. In Egypt, the Arab world’s largest and most populous country of more than 80 million, massive demonstrations involving tens of thousands of people began on Tuesday in what was billed as a “Day of Anger” and are continuing despite a ban by a very rattled government. Smaller protests are likewise occurring in Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Algeria. The domino effect so feared by Middle Eastern strongmen after Tunisian protesters chased their president from power earlier this month after a 24-year rule may soon become reality in Egypt.
Inspired by events in Tunisia, demonstrators took to the streets in Cairo on Tuesday to protest against President Hosni Mubarak’s corrupt, authoritarian regime, demanding political freedoms and higher wages. During those demonstrations, which saw water cannon and tear gas employed, three people died in encounters with security forces. A policeman was also killed.
“With us, there has been a cautious reawakening of belief in our own strength,” an Egyptian journalist told the German newspaper, Die Welt.
According to the Egyptian newspaper, The Daily News, the demonstrations were organized by the National Association for Change, which contains various opposition groups, and the Popular Parliament. January 25 was chosen as the day to launch mass movement because it coincided with a national holiday that commemorates another famous protest in Egyptian history. On this date in 1952, Egyptian police rose up against the British occupation.
Mubarak has ruled Egypt for the past 30 years under a state of emergency, imposed in 1981, that has allowed him to deal harshly with dissent. Under this law, large anti-government demonstrations, like the ones currently underway in Egypt, were quickly ended. Like most other Arab countries, Egypt has also been badly ruled during Mubarak’s time.
Corruption, unemployment, a stagnant economy and a dishonest, inefficient bureaucracy were the time bombs that caused the current explosion in Egypt, as they did in Tunisia. But unlike Tunisia, which has a 78 percent literacy rate and a developed, although frustrated, middle class, the majority of Egyptians are illiterate and live in grinding poverty. Egyptian cities are crowded with the poor. Exploitation of workers and child labor are also common. What is worse, the small, well-off ruling class appears not to care and has done little to remedy this appalling situation.
“We undoubtedly have enough problems in order to justify a revolution,” the journalist said.
Arab governments like Egypt’s are not unaware of the grievances that caused the Arab street to explode. Nepotism and control of the economy by the rulers’ friends and families have led to economic stagnation and high unemployment. But Arab leaders have refused to introduce liberal reforms to address the problems, fearing an Arab “perestroika” would see them swept away like the communist regimes in Eastern Europe.
Traditional methods of maintaining civil control also do not appear to be working. Large security forces and handouts to the population, the traditional methods of quelling popular unrest in Arab countries, were ineffective in Tunisia and are proving similarly ineffective in Egypt. The police appear to have have lost their power to intimidate the Egyptian population and prevent the demonstrations from growing into a destabilizing threat. In the past, anti-government demonstrators feared to appear on Egypt’s streets. Now, in contrast, protesters are tearing up posters with Mubarak’s image, yelling: “Mubarak, you’re plane awaits you.” One Arab publication reported that Mubarak’s son and heir, Gamal Mubarak, took the protesters’ advice and left on Wednesday with his family for England.
Our policy-makers are so frigg'n clueless that one can just anticipate the dichotomy of America continuing its $2Billion annual aid pay-out to Egypt even after a virulently anti-American regime has captured power there. Meanwhile, clueless pundits will celebrate the Muslim Brotherhood's ascension by insisting Egypt is now a vibrant democracy. Specially with Egypt having a land-border to the Hamas controlled Gaza strip, things could easily escalate into a full blown war if a radicalized Egypt decides to intervene when it sees that faulty rockets aren't effective enough when shooting at Israel.
Tunis i have no worries about of course, they are educated and smart, and unlikely to evolve into a theocracy anytime soon. Egypt could be saved, and at the same time liberated, but that will take time and low stability always makes a nation vulnerable to foreign influence. The west will just have to work harder than neighbouring Libya and Saudi Arabia, not just ignore the problem and hope it goes away like was done with Iran.

I worked with a lady who was from Egypt. She fled a long time ago because of the Muslim Brotherhood targeting her because she was a Christian. As to whether Egypt will fall into Islamic extremism. From Tunisia to Pakistan, the entire Middle East is aflame with uprisings, war and revolution. Even in Shiite Iran is there the possibility of revolution, which would be about the only good news from this region for the US.
The key state is Egypt. Should this, the most populated state in the Middle East, fall to Muslim Radicals, moderate regimes in Jordan, the United Emirates, Morocco would be endangered. Some countries would be radicalized further, such as Turkey & Pakistan. The reestablishment of a seventh century Muslim Caliphate could not be far behind with its capital at Baghdad. If Fundamentalist Islamic Regimes, dedicated to strict Sharia law, are established, Israel would be surrounded by hostile forces on all sides. Europe, already facing a Muslim crisis of its own, will not be far behind.
As was mentioned, Egypt is the key. Yes, Mubarak is a dictator. He has been our ally for 30 years. He joined the US mission against Iraq in the Gulf War to free Kuwait. Since Anwar Sadat’s death, Mubarak has maintained peace with Israel. He HAS helped us in the WAR ON TERROR. Yet, the Obama Administration is dithering in its support.
In 1979, the US failed to support the Shah. As a result, the Islamic Republic was born and it has been a thorn in the US side ever since. Hamas & Hezbollah receive support from Iran. Iran is working against the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Lebanon, Yemen, Venezuela. It is preparing to build atomic weapons. Can we afford to abandon Egypt, doing what Jimmy Carter did to the Shah? Only at our peril.
We need to support Mubarak in crushing this resistance, then try to help him weed out the Fundamentalists, taking the battle to the Muslim Brotherhood. We can’t afford to lose Egypt. The implication being that despite the corruption, the regime was useful in keeping radicals in check. This is a mistake most conservatives and not a few liberals make. The repression and corruption go hand in hand. In feeding one, we fed the other. Keeping the radicals in check was in our interest, but for the regime it was just a part of keeping all opposition, including democratic, secular opposition in check. And now we will likely both pay the price. We can moan all we want about where this will lead but we have to shoulder much of the blame for the fact that any democratic outcome will mean an end to US clientelism and an understandable hostility to the US more generally. Our tepid support for this democratic uprising (and in Tunisia) reflects our understanding that our hands are very dirty in the region when it comes to questions of freedom.

Israel offered a more than fair peace to Palestinians on countless occasions: 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1979, 1987, 1993, 2000, 2005, 2006… and so on! A Presidential Executive Order, whether Constitutional or not, becomes law simply by its publication in the Federal Registry, bypassing Congress completely. Here are just a few Executive Orders that would suspend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These Executive Orders have been on record for nearly 30 years and could be enacted by the simple stroke of a presidential pen:

PEO10995 allows the government to seize and control the communication media.
PEO10997 allows the government to take over all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels and minerals.
PEO10998 allows the government to take control of all food sources and farms.
PEO11000 allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision.
PEO11001 allows the government to take over all health, education and welfare functions.
PEO11002 designates the Postmaster General to operate a national registration of all persons.
PEO11003 allows the government to seize control of all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft.
PEO11004 allows the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate communities, build new housing with public funds, designate areas to be abandoned, and establish new locations for populations.
PEO11005 allows the government to take control of railroads, inland waterways and public storage facilities.
PEO11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.
PEO11310 grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce the plans set out in Executive Orders, to institute industrial support, to establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.
Without Congressional approval, the President now has the power to transfer whole populations to any part of the country, the power to suspend the Press and to enforce a national registration of all persons. The President, in essence, has dictatorial powers never provided to him under the Constitution. The President has the power to suspend the Bill of Rights in any real or perceived emergency. Unlike Lincoln or Roosevelt, these powers are not derived from any wartime need, but from *any* crisis– domestic or foreign, hostile or economic.
