A looming meeting with Islamic leaders hosted by the State Department has religious scholars and advocacy groups warning that the United States may “play into” the push by some Islamic nations to create new laws to stifle religious criticism and debate.
The meeting on religious tolerance, which is scheduled for mid-December, would involve representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation — a coalition of 56 nations which more or less represents the Muslim world.
Critics describe the get-together — the first in a series — as a Trojan horse for the long-running OIC push for restrictions on speech. They note the track record of nations that want the dialogue, including Egypt, where recent military action against Coptic Christians raised grave concerns about intolerance against religious minorities.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton originally announced the meeting this past July in Turkey, where she co-chaired a talk on religious tolerance with the OIC. The event was billed as a way to foster “respect and empathy and tolerance” among nations. Delegates from up to 30 countries, as well as groups like the European Union, are also invited.
A State Department official told FoxNews.com this week that the meeting is meant to combat intolerance while being “fully consistent with freedom of expression.”
A key worry is that the meeting could become a platform for Islamic governments to push for hate-speech laws which, in their most virulent and fundamentalist form, criminalize what they perceive as blasphemy.
While Clinton has drawn a line in the sand, saying nations should not “criminalize speech,” the upcoming meeting is seen by some as a misstep on a very sensitive issue.
“It’s just an astonishingly bad decision,” said Nina Shea, who sits on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and serves as director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom.
Shea, who joined a group of scholars specializing in religious defamation for an event last week on Capitol Hill hosted by The Federalist Society, warned that the United States is virtually alone among western nations in not having hate-speech laws. She said the Obama administration doesn’t need to delve deeper into religious speech issues with OIC nations, considering their history.
Shea said she doesn’t yet fear the possibility that hate-speech laws are coming to the U.S. any time soon, “but I am concerned the culture is changing on this.”
Jacob Mchangama, director of legal affairs for Denmark’s Center for Political Studies, noted that the U.S. has resisted following Europe with hate-speech laws, but the Obama administration may be willing to “relax” its approach. He noted the administration co-sponsored a resolution with Egypt in 2009 that expressed concern about “negative racial and religious stereotyping,” and said the upcoming December conference lends credibility to the OIC agenda.
The push by Islamic nations, especially Pakistan, for global religious sensitivity on its surface sounds innocuous. But the debate often pits their cause against free speech, and western officials have long complained the nations spearheading the push are keen on shielding Islam specifically from criticism.
In some countries, perceived protections against religious insult are used as license to threaten, bully and attack those who offend, intentionally or not. Most recently, the office of a French satirical newspaper was attacked after it published a Muhammad cartoon. That follows widespread 2006 protests over the publication of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper.

This is very alarming, as Islam evolved in Islamic civilization and although it calls itself a faith-based religion, by Western standards and indeed by all other standards, Islam is anything but a faith-based religion.
For instance, the word Islam in Arabic means “submission” and the word Muslim in Arabic means “one who submits,” as each and every Muslim is required to totally, completely, and unconditionally submit to the will of Allah, in stark contrast to faith-based religions that evolved outside of Islamic civilization.
Indeed, adherents of faith-based religions as opposed to Islam are not required to submit totally, completely, and unconditionally to the will of Allah or anyone else for that matter. They are also perfectly free to question and challenge the texts and tenets of their respective religion and to also freely leave their respective religion or convert to another religion altogether if they so desire. Whereas in Islam, on the other hand, because the freedom of conscience is forbidden, those same actions, blasphemy in the first case and apostasy in the second, are capital offenses.
Hence, what true faith-based religions likewise punishes blasphemy and apostasy under the pain of death? The answer, of course, is none of them. Irrefutably proving that Islam is not a faith-based religion, at least not in the same way we define faith-based religions in the West.
Moreover, per the sixth and most important pillar of Islam, jihad or holy fighting in the cause of Allah against non-Muslim unbelievers to make Islam supreme is an obligatory duty for EVERY MUSLIM. Indeed, the sixth and most important pillar of Islam doesn't make it an obligatory duty only for so-called extremist Muslims to fight jihad in the cause of Allah and the sixth and most important pillar of Islam doesn't make it an obligatory duty only for so-called radical Muslims to fight jihad in the cause of Allah, while at the same time giving an exemption and free pass for so-called moderate Muslims to fight jihad in the cause of Allah. Instead, the sixth and most important pillar of Islam makes it an obligatory duty for ALL MUSLIMS to fight jihad in the cause of Allah against non-Muslim unbelievers to make Islam supreme. No exceptions.
Therefore, ALL MAINSTREAM ORTHODOX MUSLIMS are jihadists. A few of them are violent jihadists, while most of them are non-violent stealth and deceptive jihadists, and the few that are not jihadists are not Muslims at all, but instead blasphemous apostates that per the dictates of Islam should be executed.
Furthermore, in Islam Sharia (Islamic law), which is the will of Allah, because it is considered to be divine and therefore perfectly just, supersedes all manmade laws. Indeed, in country after country and anywhere and everywhere mass Muslim immigration is occurring in the world today, just like clockwork the vast overwhelming majority of Muslim immigrants flat out refuse to assimilate and integrate and instead form segregated Muslim enclaves that in time morph into Muslim no-go zones ruled by Sharia as fifth columns and in direct contravention to the laws of the states in which they reside. Therefore, Muslims obviously never ever migrate to the West or anywhere else for that matter to assimilate and integrate, but instead to eventually subjugate and dominate via the imposition of Sharia for the purpose of demographic conquest to make Islam supreme.
Additionally, Sharia (Islamic law) governs all aspects of Muslims' lives from foreign policy and domestic policy, to all aspects of personal life even governing the way that Muslims must all use the bathroom. Hence, what faith-based religions similarly are all encompassing in that they govern and control all aspects of life? The answer, of course, again is none of them. Only Islam does, further setting it apart from faith-based religions.
Thus, not only is Islam not a faith-based religion in the same sense that faith-based religions are understood to be in the West, which means that in America Islam isn't protected by the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, but Islam is also totally incompatible with all other adherents of faith-based religions as well, as per the sixth and most important pillar of Islam, ALL MAINSTREAM ORTHODOX MUSLIMS are obligated to fight jihad in the cause of Allah against non-Muslim unbelievers to make Islam supreme. Which not only further sets Islam apart from faith-based religions, but also makes it completely incompatible with all other adherents of faith-based religions including atheists and agnostics.

IF they loved their culture and religion, it seems to be they'd remain in their own country and fight for peace! Mexicans migrating here from Mexico do the same thing. None of these two populations seem to want to "straighten out their own countries" — and yet they'll come to America to tell us how to run ours.

Since it is now conceivable for a W.H. State Department Appointee to "Treaty" away our American Civil Rights, we have a duty to oppose such enemies of the USA. Hillary, regardless of title, has no authority to dilute my “Inalienable Rights” which include free speech. If everything one said was not offensive to someone you wouldn't need the first amendment. It is there so that we are protected when we disagree.
