The Day the Bake Sale Died

Several weeks ago, the Obama State Department essentially declared the war on terror over. “People who once might have gone into al Qaeda see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism,” an unnamed State Department official said. Meanwhile, President Obama was preparing to fly to Afghanistan to declare that we had beaten back the Taliban – and, simultaneously, to declare that we were in negotiations with the supposedly defanged Taliban.

This stunt was followed by the Obama administration’s attempted legitimization of one of the top Egyptian presidential candidates, Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, as a moderate. The Los Angeles Times went so far as to label Fotouh a “dynamic pragmatist.” Dynamic may not have been the right word – it’s too similar to dynamite, which is apparently Fotouh’s political method of choice. In 2004, he said, “I would personally hope to have a chance to bear arms to confront the US occupation in Iraq.” But happy days are here again on the Nile!

This, in the opinion of the Obama administration, is all charming multiculturalism. When the Egyptian parliament discusses bills allowing men to have sex with their dead wives, that’s just a lifestyle choice. When Chinese smugglers traffic pills filled with powdered human baby flesh, and when the Chinese government beats the wife of a dissident to force him to abandon the US embassy, that’s simply a disagreement about the meaning of freedom. And we can all agree to disagree, can’t we?

It’s time to stop worrying about the rest of the world, says the Obama administration. It’s time to start worrying about the real threat: us. This week, President Obama promised that the time had come to refocus from external enemies to the real battles that need fighting here at home. “After more than a decade of war,” he said in his weekly address, “it is time to focus on nation building here at home.”

This was one of Obama’s favorite themes during the 2008 campaign – the notion that Americans required fundamental change. It’s why Michelle assured Americans that “before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.”

We are, in short, a dangerous bunch. And we require government to fix our brokenness.

You take too long to get your articles submitted, Ben. Massachusetts has repealed the stupid law in less time than it took you to spin a reaction to said law, and that's saying something. In Massachusetts, stupid laws are usually not repealed, just added to.

LOL….all that over the banning of cake sales ? Might it be the fact that obesity among the young is way out of proportion ? And the FACT that kids are developing Type 2 diabetes before the age of 10 ? Not to mention heart disease ? In record numbers .The only problem is , it's not the cake sales , it's the life style ,no exercise , diets containing high fat ,high cholesterol processed foods .And look at the parents …AND the medicalk bills associated with obesity . But hey who are we to question the wisdom of Big Buisiness ? Just try reading the ingedients on the next box of devil dogs you buy , you'll need a degree in Chemistry to understand what you're eating .Aside from all that , this article is just another of the typical FPM strawman .

Freedom includes the freedom to be overweight.
If you don't like paying for others being above ideal weight then take down state run healthcare.

Before long, by logical extension, the Orwellian Nanny State/Big Brother will have us restricted to living in certain areas; driving will be controlled. Holidays, food, religious observances and even dress will eventually be government ordained. Smoking will be forbidden anywhere outside of government cellars in remote locations with gigantic air filters. Telephones will be all be tapped. TV will be re created to watch you and tell you what to do and when to do it. Work will be government controlled. All businesses and corporations will be Government bureaucracies. Taxes will be about 80%. The Government will eventually open centers that will conveniently offer both abortion and early death "retirement" ….For those over 65, death will be suggested by Government counselors who will offer families up to $100 to convince old uncle T to come in and be "retired". Have a nice day.

Power-grabbing Democrats always promise if we give them the power to control our lives, they will use it only in times of emergency. Of course, emergencies are in the eye of the beholder, and dictatorial power for control-freak Democrats is like whiskey was for 20th-century comedian W.C. Fields: “Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore, always carry a small snake.” Democrats will make sure there’s a snakebite soon enough.

  6. Amused says:

LOL….and Republicans would have you put in jail for using rubbers , woman's suffrage reversed, christians would be allowed to smack around non-christians as part of their faith obligation , having sex for any other reason other than reproduction will be forbidden ……….sound crazy ? Well guess what , all these have been proposed by REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS .Seems to me "controling our lives " lies mainly in the domain of the Republican/Conservative mindset . P.S. and they don't need an "emergency " .

    • Oleg says:

When and where have such things been proposed, names, places, and dates? On the other hand we have had the recent case of the U.S Interior department raiding the Gibson guitar factory and confiscating their property on the pretense of using "Illegal wood" wood that was legally cut, legally exported from it's country of origin, and legally imported via U.S customs. It's interesting that every point you make about so called "Republican extremism" is regarding sexual issues, about the only things that liberal Democrats are liberal about are drugs and sexual practices.

    • Amused says:

lol…..dont like facts do ya Repocons ? That's the legislation that lamebrain republicans are attempting to pass aroundf the country , and there's much more ,just as ludicrous . .And you schmeckels are worried about cake sales ?

      • Roger says:

I love facts, and you are spinning them.

Republicans are not restricting birth control, they are resisting being forced to fund it against moral objections.
Should you be forced to pay for the Holy Sacrement in Catholic churches since it's food and poor take it for nourishment?

        • Amused says:

Again , another dyslexic commenter ….hey ROGER – READ the House Bills that are mentioned , they have nothing to do with ANYONE FUNDING CONTRACEPTIVES FOR ANYONE …..What's the matter with you people here ??? You just ignore and go off on your selected tangent . And what in the hell kind of analogy is that , about Communion Elements ????? Man you're just showing IGNORANCE . Learn to read genius .

          • Roger says:

Unfunded mandates as deemed by the HHS secretary have the effect of law.

So, all employers would be forced to pay for contraceptives even over moral objectives.

Your talking points are ringing hollow.

I dont really care what I look like to an imbecile like you , who is incapable of any qualified reading comprehension , and who ducks the issue by raising another ….that's pretty dumb of you Roger .And as for any insults or criticism directed towards me , well I take into consideration the source . For all your blather , you haven't refuted the 3 issues I raised , nor have you even acknowledged them , this shows a clear lack of understanding the English language on your part dimbulb . Or of course the ususal repocon response of tossing facts down the memory hole and continuing on as if you've never heard them . That's on you chump , and should give you a good idea of what I consider the worth of any criticism coming from one such as yourself . Dont hurt yourself thinking Rogo-boy .

          • Roger says:

I have refuted every issue you raised. You just refused to understand the facts involved.

Who could ever overcome the great twinkie? I think the big problem most peope
have is not just being told what to do but if they say no they are against X,Y,Z…
the government takes their money for government things and starts spending
on what the populus disdains and has moral objection to. Coercion by Government
through taxation or regulation is gotten out of hand and the people are becoming
moreso unwilling participants in the process. Maybe the dynamic will change with
the next group of people being voted into Washington and the State houses.

    • Amused says:

guess you don't mind government between your legs eh ? Scroll up a bit , I lsted Republican proposed legislation that came up for a vote ….hopefully sanbityy ruled , but the FACT that it was propsed lregislation by the republicans lawmakers in this country ,reeeeeeally makes one wonder just what is on the mind of the repocons in this country . To give an employer the right to fire an employee based on her "use of contraceptives' is totally against everything American , indeed stomps the Constitution . You people need to get your heads screwed on straight .

  13. Amused says:

Check the House Bills DIMBULB . And dop something you're obviously incapable of ….READING COMPREHENSION ….these House Bills proposed by REPOCON politicians want to give employers the right to FIRE female employees for their USE of contraceptive ….can't you read arsehole ??? These are not the ideas of any particulatr website , these are BILLS BROUGH BEFORE THE HOUSE BY THE SCHMUCKS PEOPLE LIKE YOU APPROVE > And no these moronic bills will probably NOT pas but the very notion that they would be proposed and brought before the house , is kinda telling about the idiots who proposed them to begin with -ALL REPUBLICANS . So learn to read you sycophant , before you come back here calling me an imbecile .

    • Amused says:

Carlos you are typical of the kind of jerk , that lets facts go down the memory hole – purposefull ignorance . Dont hurt yourself thinking SCHMUCKO

      • Roger says:

You let facts go down that hole.

Republicans don't keep contraceptives from being available. You can go into Walmart and decide for yourself what you want to pay for. Your choice, the rewards of your own labors.

I resist you saying you should enjoy the rewards of my labor. That's slavery, that's socialism.

        • Amused says:

Again Roger you are intent on proving yourself an idiot who cant read . There's nothing much anyone can do about that . If you actually READ and Comprehended what was being proposed in those three links , you wouldn't be coming back again and again like a little parrot repeating the same issue of "paying " for contraceptive . Hey Rogo-boy ….you're a real bean brain . I can see now this whole subject is over your head and all you can spew out is your repocon memes . Oh well , runalong little boy .

          • Roger says:

Says you. How proud you must be to cobble a few sentences together.

How many tries did it take you?

          • Amused says:

Says me ??? LOL….look at your replies Rogo ! You haven't addressed in any small or large way , the content of the issues I enumerated .Instead you keep repeating about paying for contraceptives , like the little parrot that you are , when paying for contraceptives was simply not the issues of the legislation I stated you repocons are proposing and trying to pass . Trying to sound smart by reusing my words and phrases and your juvenile ad hominems ,simply confirm my estimation of you – NITWIT . Deal with it Rogo . Comeback with FACTS to REFUTE or REBUTT the issues I enumerated .

          • Roger says:

You don't lay any out to refute. Is this where you accuse me of Dyslexia again?

And if you understood the issues here you wouldn't be so lame.
Liberties are being stolen from us and all you want to do is insult those upset by it.

Have you read the declaration of Independence? The right to bake cookies is not granted by our government, but by our creator. And when the government becomes so heavy handed that it thinks it can decide what our rights will be, then it's time to make changes.

      • Carlos Perera says:

Oh my, the loud-mouthed imbecile and would-be Chekist, is suffering from a bad case of projection. The articles to which he linked–excluding the piece of mendacious agit-prop from freewoodpost.com, which just created the incredibly jejune tampon saga out of whole cloth–reference Arizona House Bill 2625, which allows employers to decline to cover contraception for reasons of conscience and religious principle. Interested readers can peruse the applicable passage (section 1, subsection Z) for themselves at http://legiscan.com/gaits/text/596074, of which the relevant sentence is, "THIS SUBSECTION SHALL NOT EXCLUDE COVERAGE FOR PRESCRIPTION CONTRACEPTIVE METHODS ORDERED BY A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER WITH PRESCRIPTIVE AUTHORITY FOR MEDICAL INDICATIONS OTHER THAN FOR CONTRACEPTIVE, ABORTIFACIENT, ABORTION OR STERILIZATION PURPOSES. A CORPORATION, EMPLOYER, SPONSOR, ISSUER OR OTHER ENTITY OFFERING THE PLAN MAY STATE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OR MORAL CONVICTIONS IN ITS AFFIDAVIT THAT REQUIRE THE SUBSCRIBER TO FIRST PAY FOR THE PRESCRIPTION AND THEN SUBMIT A CLAIM TO THE CORPORATION ALONG WITH EVIDENCE THAT THE PRESCRIPTION IS NOT IN WHOLE OR IN PART FOR A PURPOSE COVERED BY THE OBJECTION."

As I said earlier, what is at issue here is the government's ability to use its police powers to force employers to provide insurance coverage that goes against their consciences and religious principles. Tough-sounding guys like Amused, hiding as they do behind the anonymity of a pseudonym, lack the stones to shake us down in person, but, boy, are they ever brave when it comes to siccing the dogs of government power on us. Note that the most fearsome secret police chiefs of the 20th century–Dzerzhinsky, Yagoda, Beria, Himmler, Lo, etc.–were by and large dweeby guys who'd have been scared to take on a Cub Scout den mother without a squad of big goons to back them.

        • Amused says:

Gee…..dyslexia seems to be a common symptom here eh Carlos ? Go back and click on those three links . If anything its repocons ATTEMPTING to be Moral Police .None of the three links has anything to do with anyone paying for someone elses contraceptive . LEAR TO READ MAN ….then come back and attempt a rebuttal from a standpoint of honesty and intelligence ., not your propagandized parrotted ignorant expressions .

But aside from your purposed deception , tell me genius ….what are contraceptives used for ? Regardless of who is paying ? LOL….you guys are really abunch of dolts , trying your best at pretending you have functioning objective brains .
