In recent days Egypt canceled its deal to sell natural gas to Israel, thereby reneging on one of the key planks of the 1979 Israeli-Egyptian Peace Treaty.
At least, that’s what some say, while others say it was only the Egyptian gas company that canceled the deal and not the Egyptian government.
Israel’s leading daily Israel Hayom cites “analysts in the Arabic press” who say “the national gas company could not have taken such a fateful decision without the go-ahead from the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which effectively rules Egypt.” Yet Israel Hayom also mentions “senior officials” in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office who claim that “the Egyptian government had not been involved in the decision in any way, and that it was a purely commercial move.”
Indeed, one of those downplaying the development is Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who said: “We don’t see this gas cutoff as something that is born out of political developments. This is actually a business dispute between the Israeli company and the Egyptian company.” Yet his finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, said: “This is a dangerous precedent that overshadows the peace agreements…between Israel and Egypt.”
One can sum it up simply by saying that: the cutoff is not a good development; and since the fall of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in January last year, the Israeli government has consistently downplayed negative developments and held out hopes that the Israeli-Egyptian Peace Treaty will endure. Bumps in the road since Mubarak’s ouster have included:
● The bombing of Egypt’s gas pipeline in Sinai no less than 14 times
● Sinai’s deterioration into a badlands dominated by Bedouin gangs and terrorists, leading to last August’s terror attack on southern Israel
● The subsequent storming of the Israeli embassy by a mob in Cairo and near-lynching of six of its workers
● The overwhelming victory of Islamists in Egypt’s parliamentary elections
● The firing of a rocket from Sinai into Israel’s southern coastal resort of Eilat
● A furious backlash in recent days against Egypt’s Grand Mufti for merely visiting Jerusalem, with MPs and others demanding that he step down

Admit that Egypt really, really hates Israel and that the Egyptians really, really hate Jews and you will have to admit that any peace deal with Arabs (and Palestinians are Arabs) is nothing but an illusion. And then what are you going to do? No more "peace process". No more "two-state solution". No more kidding ourselves that we are accepted in the Middle East. Gee, we may actually have to fight back again.

Israel has already assumed that egypt will destroy the peace treaty. I visited Israel last month and everyone I spoke to has no hope that egypt will live up to its treaty obligations. The hatred egyptians have toward Israel and Jews is well documented. As the economy in egypt worsens, the government will naturally blame Israel for their country's problems and threaten war. This is a very old refrain repeated regularly throughout the miserable arab world. The current administration in Washington will do nothing useful, of course. Israel is prepared for and will win the next war, but the price will be very high. Israel should occupy the sinai and never return it until or unless egypt ever develops an authentic democracy, a most unlikely prospect.
And this time, Israel should also not bow to foreign pressure and must keep fighting until the war is well and truly won. Then her enemies will no longer be able to claim "victory", as the entire Arab world does for the 1973 war, and as Hizbullah and Hamas do for their more recent entanglements with Israel.
Egypt will destroy their peace treaty with Israel, or make it imperative that Israel strike the first blow. Israel is
hoping against hope that this won't happen. Israel will win the war, and retake the Sinai, but who knows what Hamas, Hezbollah, or Iran will do. If Hamas, Hezbollah, or Iran do nothing, then an Egyptian-Israeli war will be a local struggle, but there is slight possibility of that. Iran might do nothing, but Hezbollah and Hamas, Iran's proxies, will likely attack Israel. If Iran closes off the Straits of Hormuz, then we'll have an escalating conflict; and Obama will be forced to act.

If Egypt is bent on war with Israel, so be it. This time when Israel takes back the Sinai, it will be for keeps. Then the people of Gaza can be relocated across the canal to Egypt. If that is not enough fightng for the Arabs, Israel can take over the west Bank and relocate the people there to Jordan. Israel can use the land, and of course, keep the Golan Heights.
The Egyptian ruling military council may have stopped the gas arrangement because it wasn't working very well. Look, it was blown up 14 times right? Instead of admitting that they can't control it, they say up yours to Israel. This serves to cover their incompetence and placate the mobs at home. To conclude that Egypt will now try to invade Israel is a large and irresponsible leap. First, all the other times they did it, they tried to keep it a secret. Shutting off gas is a clue. Second, they got their asses handed to them. Third, they need to keep their tanks operational and their troops healthy so they can retain control of the country. If they attack Israel, they will be obliterated and lose domestic control. I will bet one dollar to a donut that Egypt and Israel are working on a gas swap arrangement right now with one or more third parties that will keep the home fires burning.
