Iran is in poor demographic shape and the Ayatollahs are beginning to panic.
Iranian women bore 7 children in 1970, and an average of 1.5 today, the same as Europe. In the UN’s “low variant” forecast, fertility will fall to just 1 child per female. By 2050, elderly dependents will comprise nearly a third of the population of some Muslim nations, notably Iran
Iran’s Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, warns that national extinction will be the result of his country’s collapsing birth rate. On September 10, 2010, the Iranian president declared during a meeting with officials in Alborz province,
“Two children” is a formula for the extinction of a nation, not the survival of a nation . . . The most recent data showing that there are only 18 children for every 10 Iranian couples should raise an alarm among the present generation
Iran’s solution to the problem is as predictable as it is discriminatory. Pushing women out of universities to avoid the postponement problem.
Senior clerics in Iran’s theocratic regime have become concerned about the social side-effects of rising educational standards among women, including declining birth and marriage rates.
Under the new policy, women undergraduates will be excluded from a broad range of studies in some of the country’s leading institutions, including English literature, English translation, hotel management, archaeology, nuclear physics, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and business management.
And the panic is bad enough that the clerics are backtracking.
On Aug. 1 of this year, Minister of Health Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi announced the budget for family-planning programs would be completely eliminated. In its place, a budget would be requested to fund “fertility programs” that would care for mothers, infants and children. The minister added that this new direction was in line with the Supreme Leader’s wishes, which let it be known to potential critics or those looking to attack the president by politicizing the issue that the highest authority had given his approval for this change.
To make it to the point where fertility programs are going to do any good and produce Ahmadinejad’s 150 million population, Iran will have to turn itself into Nigeria and that is incompatible with the Shiite imperialistic goals of its ruling class. And the Guardians are running out of time to stabilize their Islamic Revolution before it completely burns out.
