USAID Earns Bad Transparency Rating
Posted By Daniel Greenfield On October 4, 2012 @ 1:45 pm In The Point | 4 Comments
The USAID budget totals over 50 billion dollars. That’s pretty impressive money. It comes out to about the 100,000 military positions being cut to save 50 billion dollars. But the USAID budget has also been found to be lacking in basic transparency earning a barely 50 percent score from Publish What You Fund and ranking 27th behind Estonia.
Why does the USAID budget rank so low in transparency? For one thing look where the money goes.
Last year the top recipients of USAID money were kleptocracies like Afghanistan (1.4 billion dollars), Haiti (970 million) and Pakistan (393 million). The Palestinian money-hole, combining Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza, added another 700 million to the total.
Aside from the amounts, these are countries with no accountability and total corruption on all sides. And of the top 20 recipients of USAID cash, 3.2 billion dollars went to Muslim countries.
