Where Iran is concerned, anyone involved with the Obama Administration seems to take logic, sanity and reason and throw them down the deepest darkest hole they can possibly find.
Neither the United States nor Israel is capable of wiping out Iran’s nuclear capability, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said, and “such an attack would make a nuclear-armed Iran inevitable. They would just bury the program deeper and make it more covert.”
Stopping Iran’s nuclear program will make its nuclear capability inevitable. As opposed to not stopping it, which will make the nuclear program even more inevitable.
Gates would have some credibility if he said that Israel couldn’t stop Iran’s nuclear capability, but is he seriously claiming that the United States couldn’t do it?
To follow the logic trail here, force can’t stop Iran’s nuclear program, but the same sanctions which failed to dissuade Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il over more than a decade will get the job done.
Destroying Iran’s nuclear program will just make Iran conceal it better, which means we should give up trying to stop it or they’ll find some way to hide it from us when they rebuild it.
There’s absolutely no logical thread to any of this. It’s the old arguments being unable to fight terror being mapped over Iran’s nuclear program which is an organic and unstoppable entity except through limited sanctions.
Gates went on to predict that ”the results of an American or Israeli military strike on Iran could, in my view, prove catastrophic, haunting us for generations in that part of the world.”
Like undermining the Shah and supporting the Ayatollah did? Or the Arab Spring? Funny how appeasement never haunts us for generations, but military action is always haunting us.
