Stalin destroyed churches for a decade before the Fall of 1941. The only reason he turned over to the Orthodox Church in October of 1941 was the utter collapse of his military, which, in his own words, refused to fight for the World Revolution. In other words, the only reason he coopted the Church going forward is fear for his regime and his life itself.
