There was a place by Bloomingdale, IN where a couple used to park to suck face and the couple, when they would see us coming, would park on the tracks and "moon" us at least once or twice a month–had a few close calls with them. They'd actually have the motor shut off sometimes.
I made up my mind, after the first two or three times of that, the burden was theirs to suffer–I was willing to follow SOP but not burden myself with the results of their stupidity. I knew a couple of older engineers who weren't able to "massage" themselves in that way and they tended to be the "Rule G" (intoxicated) violators.
'Hit a UPS delivery truck once. I was only going about 20 mph but the truck spun around a complete 360, throwing the driver out and on the ground. Oddly enough, it turned out he was impaired. 'Not too funny then but it is now.
I fired for an older older one who once hit a loaded belly dump. It derailed his train, tore him up pretty good, and killed the driver. He was a very nice guy, from Alabama as I recall, and was visibly, after many years, still not emotionally recovered from it. 'Can't say I blame him. To his credit, he didn't seek solace in alcohol.
