Islamic Law Allows Husbands to Divorce their Wives on Facebook

Naturally women don’t have the same ability because Islam is to gender equality as a pile of plutonium is to public safety.
In a bizarre case, a man is said to have divorced his wife on Facebook. He wrote ‘Talaaq’, three times on his wife’s Facebook wall. The man also obtained a fatwa in favor of his action.
Following her husband’s action the woman filed a police complaint, acting on the complaint the police arrested the family members of the man.
The accused man is still absconding. According to the police this is case is a first of its kind. City Qazi Sayeed Mushtaq Ali Naqvi has ruled that this way of divorcing a wife is against Shariyat.
I don’t see why there’s much of a Sharia debate over this. All Islamic law requires is that a husband tell his wife three times that she is divorced. Or Talaaq, Talaaq, Talaaq.
Divorce rates have skyrocketed, leaving many Tajik women abandoned by their husbands, shunned by their communities, and denied child support and property rights.
Many of these men didn’t even bother traveling home to break off their marriage. Instead, they took advantage of technology to avoid a difficult conversation, sending a simple SMS saying “talaq, talaq, talaq”.
Skype divorces have also become an issue.
An e-savvy Qatar resident learnt this the hard way when he typed talaq thrice while chatting with his wife on Skype.
He says he did not mean it but Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband has ruled that his nikah stands terminated, according to a news report in an Indian paper.
That is not all. For his careless ‘chat’, the man can remarry his divorced wife only after halala, a practice under which the woman has to marry and divorce another man before she can marry her previous husband again, the Times of India reported on Wednesday.
Thank goodness for Islamic morality.
