The ‘Epidemic’ of Sexual Harassment—and Rape—in Morsi’s Egypt

Since the “Arab Spring” came to Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood assumed power, sexual harassment, abuse, and rape of women has skyrocketed.  This graph, which shows an enormous jump in sexual harassment beginning around January 2011, when the Tahrir revolts began, certainly demonstrates as much. Its findings are supported by any number of reports appearing in both Arabic and Western media, and from both Egyptian and foreign women.

Hundreds of Egyptian women recently took to the streets of Tahrir Square to protest the nonstop harassment they must endure whenever they emerge from their homes and onto the streets.  They held slogans like “Silence is unacceptable, my anger will be heard,” and “A safe square for all; Down with sexual harassment.” “Marchers also shouted chants against President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood group from which he hails,” wrote Al Ahram Online

The response?  More sexual harassment and rapes.

One woman recently appeared on Egyptian TV recounting her horrific experiences.  On the program, she appeared shaded, to conceal her identity—less because she felt personal shame or guilt at what happened and more to protect her and her family from further abuses.   She recounted how she saw a Facebook notice that Egyptian women were going to protest the unsafe conditions for women on the Egyptian street and decided to join them on their scheduled march in Tahrir Square on January 25, the anniversary of the revolution. “I did not realize I would become the victim,” she lamented. When it started to get dark, her group heard that “strange looking men” were appearing and that it was best to leave the area.

During some chaos she was lost from her group.  One man told her “this way,” pretending to help her to safety—“I was so naïve to believe him!”—only to lead her to a large group of men, she estimated around 50, who proceeded to encircle and rape her.  “This was the first time someone touched me” quietly recounted the former virgin: “Each one of them attacked a part of my body.”  Several pinned her down while others pulled off her pants and stripped her naked, gang-raping her for approximately 20 minutes.  She explained how she truly thought she was going to die, and kept screaming “I’m dying!” In response, one of her rapists whispered in her ears: “Don’t worry.  Take it,” even as the rest called her derogatory names she would not recite on the air.

Considering that in late November last year, when many Egyptians were protesting President Morsi’s Sharia-heavy constitution and the Muslim Brotherhood responded by paying gangs and thugs to rape protesting women in the streets, anecdotes like the above are becoming commonplace.  Indeed, to appreciate the regularization of sexual harassment and rape in Egypt, consider the words of popular Salafi preacher Abu Islam, who openly, and very sarcastically, blamed the victims:

“They tell you women are a red line. They tell you that naked women—who are going to Tahrir Square because they want to be raped—are a red line! And they ask Mursi and the Brotherhood to leave power!”  Abu Islam added that these women activists are going to Tahrir Square not to protest but to be sexually abused because they had wanted to be raped.  “They have no shame, no fear and not even feminism. Practice your feminism, sheikha! It is a legitimate right for you to be a woman,” he said. “And by the way, 90 percent of them are crusaders [i.e. Christian Copts] and the remaining 10 percent are widows who have no one to control them. You see women talking like monsters,” he added.

No doubt some will argue that Abu Islam is just a “radical” who speaks for himself.  Yet many more formal bodies made similar observations, including the new Egyptian parliament’s Shura Council’s “human rights committee,” whose members said

that women taking part in protests bear the responsibility of being sexually harassed, describing what happens in some demonstrators’ tents as “prostitution.” Major General Adel Afify, member of the committee representing the Salafi Asala Party, criticized female protesters, saying that they “know they are among thugs. They should protect themselves before requesting that the Interior Ministry does so. By getting herself involved in such circumstances, the woman has 100 percent responsibility.”

These sentiments are widely shared in Egypt.  A study by the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights said that 98% of foreign female visitors and 83% of Egyptian women have experienced sexual harassment. Sixty-two percent of men admitted to harassing women, while 53% blame women for “bringing it on.”

Even non-Egyptian women are becoming increasingly familiar with this phenomenon. After describing her own personal experiences with sexual harassment in Egypt, Sarah A. Topol asserts that “Sexual harassment — actually, let’s call it what it is: assault — in Egypt is not just common. It’s an epidemic. It inhabits every space in this society, from back alleys to the birthplace of the newest chapter of Egyptian history.… For the 18 days of protest last year, for me, Tahrir Square was a harassment-free zone. I noticed it, everyone did. But as soon as President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, the unity ended and the harassment returned.”

Journalists Sophia Jones and Erin Banco also elaborated on the epidemic of sexual harassment in Egypt:

It’s difficult to write about sexual harassment and assault in Egypt without sounding like Angry White Girls. But as journalists, it is not merely our job to report in such an environment, it is an everyday psychological and sometimes even physical battle. We open our closets in the morning and debate what to wear to lessen the harassment—as if this would help. Even fully veiled women are harassed on Cairo’s streets. As one young Cairo-based female reporter recently remarked, “it’s a f–ked-up reality that we will be touched.”….  Like hundreds of other countries around the world, sexual harassment and assault happens everyday in Egypt. It happens to both Egyptian women, and to foreign women. It happens at all times of the day, despite what some may think, at the hands of men—young boys, grown men, police officers, military officers, and almost everyone in between.

The journalists then offer an all too familiar story:

Nor is this merely limited to sexual harassment, but it often, under the right circumstances—few witnesses, the availability of dark allies—culminates into fullblown gangrape.  For example, Natasha Smith a young British journalist covering Tahrir Square, was dragged from her male companion into a frenzied mob in the hundreds. “Men began to rip off my clothes,” she wrote on her blog. They “pulled my limbs apart and threw me around. They were scratching and clenching my breasts and forcing their fingers inside me in every possible way … All I could see was leering faces, more and more faces sneering and jeering as I was tossed around like fresh meat among starving lions.”

All this is yet one more example of the true nature of the Obama-supported “Arab Spring.”

The entire "Arab Spring" has been proven to be a horrific nightmare, yet Obama and surrogates will never admit it, including many Repubs. This is a tragedy and a travesty.

The stupidity of this administration in initiating and encouraging the rise of radical Islam beggars belief. And who suffers? For sure, it is not those self satisfied dolts in WDC. But then, maybe it was not stupidity but a deliberate act while fully understanding the probable outcome?

It is not Stupidity, it is their, Obama's PLAN. Obama is a Muslim, check out his Muslim Faith Ring, he wears it 24/7 and has since 1981. He used it as his wedding ring when he Sham Married Michelle.

  4. Adam says:

As usual the Liberal feminists are quiet on this issue. They want to live in the illusion that the Arab Spring was a success and Egypt is now a democracy. Egypt needs a different kind of revolution, one in which the women are both educated and armed.

  5. Anti sharia says:

Where is the outrage from the feminist organizations? I guess they can only be bothered with the fictitious "war on women" and not with real abuse.

    • @1389 says:

The feminists are a bunch of commie front groups and they're in cahoots with both the Muslims and the eco-radicals. It was never about making life better for women – only about political and economic power for the "movement" leaders.

    • kaz says:

your problem is that you havent grasped the fact that "womens rights" groups limit their venom to white men. any depredation upon women that is not performed by white men is of no concern to them. they view other organizations that hate white men as allies, and will continue to consider islam a friend until they have castrated the last white man. then, reality may start to set in.

A better idea would be if women would get together and leave Egypt. Then Islam in Egypt would collapse; because there would be no one for the Islamists to blame their failings on. 11. Guest says:

We might need to look at what is going on in Egypt and elsewhere in the ME as terror attacks on women rather than sexual acts by men who cannot control themselves. This is far from the reality. Rather it is part of the process to get these women back under control as laid out in the Koran and as interpreted by Mullah's. For example, 60 years ago in Saudi Arabia women did not have to dress in Black head to foot. In Iran pre 1979 women could dress as they pleased. In Egypt, pre-Arab Spring women could dress as they pleased. These rapes and attacks on women are not spontaneous. They are deliberate, intended to terrorize to the point that women are covered head to foot, are escorted by male and that they stay at home like a well trained Dog. Welcome to the reality as this is about the Islamization of a people and Democracy is not what the MB want. Hence the post Arab Spring attacks on Copt's, Christians, Jews and not least terrorist attacks on emancipated females.

  20. Mark says:

Why do we here nothing or next to nothing about this from Western feminists, from "progressives" and "liberals" in the U.S. and certainly nothing from the U.S. government/ The West must break the silence. You don't have to hate every Muslim as some of the commentators on this site unfortunately do in order to speak out against these horrific attacks on women. The policy of the U.S. government in demanding that Mubarak had to step down was the beginning of the end of any hope for democracy in Egypt. Unfortunately, in Egypt the vast majority of people is ignorant and uneducated and also it should be added taught to hate by equally ignorant clerics. Mubarak it also should be noted, while keeping the lid on the boiling pot helped to spread hatred toward Jews in the media and did nothing to educate the majority of Muslim men that they have no right to believe in male supremacy and that attacks on women are wrong. It is also true that the Muslim Brotherhood is directly responsible for these barbaric acts against women and their aim is total subjugation of women.

  21. F.K. Juliano says:

  22. Parenthetical Phrase says:

About a year or so ago a popular Egyptian woman journalist went on Egyptian television and advocated that Arab men should sexually harrass Israeli women. Hmmmm….be careful what you advocate for others my dear Egyptian sisters– you just might become the recipients of all that you wish on others. As for the female foreign journalists: your plight does not stir my sympathy. For years and even now you demonize Israel, a country where women can walk freely, join the army, carry a weapon, serve in the government, and which has the highest number of female entreneurs in the world. Israel is the only country in the Middle East where female genital mutilation is illegal and where honor killings and forced marriages are illegal. Yet it is Israel in your minds which is brutal. May every day you spend in Egypt and in any other Arab country be one long be one long group grope.

  23. Rebas Thgil says:

Perhaps, similar to capturing and sterilizing feral animals we should start capturing rape squad koranimals and relieve them of their weapons. Dress them in burkas before throwing them back in the midst of their own kind, and let's see how they like their own medicine.

  24. WilliamJamesWard says:

It would have been thought some macabre story of serial insanity in which men become
evil beasts and change to demons with murderous intent of self and others for vile and
incomprehensible ends. Evil itself is against man and all of creation per the oldest of
Biblical literature in which everyone is warned to carry themselves in certain demeanor
but having changed from the standards and accepting devolvement a line has been
crossed and the slippery slope is a place where we see the cascading of human life
into hell. It is the advent of Islamic ruin spreading into the World. Thus it is
understood why the West fought so hard and ruthlessly to stop and destroy it, earlier
generations knew what they were doing and today this evil is accelerating with no real
opposition though there is plain and clear evidence of the eminent destruction ahead……….William

    • johnnywoods says:

The "story of serial insanity" you speak of is known as Islam, a.k.a. The religion of peace as developed by an illiterate camelherd possessed by demons and known as Mohammed, (piss be upon him).

  25. rajeesharladukka says:

I'm really sad to the increasing rate of crimes against the woman peoples, brutal rapes are increasing day by day and it’s high time to take proper actions or it’s questioning about the current law and justice system. We need an effective and systemic solution for preventing this type of ruthless crime or government should allow a gun for each woman in the country for self saving. In fact, the criminals must be punished with a death penalty to reduce rape and other crimes with women. Some days ago in Delhi, the capital of India had an incident in the same type of brutal gang rape in the running bus. Really very sad that she died from her injuries thirteen days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore for brain and gastrointestinal damage. So, all of these stories tells the false and unsafe protection policies of government. The government should take immediate action and high security for ensuring the safety of woman because so many women’s would like to visit India to explore their tours and vacations. So, without a proper safety to walk in street how can they live in this world?

  26. Mark says:

I wish so many of those who place comments that demonize all Muslims in Egypt would use their brains. Yes, the barbaric acts of Egyptian men must be condemned but to say that every Muslim man is a rapist is just not true or to demand that every Muslim embrace Christ does not help the situation!!!!! There are educated Christian and Muslim Egyptians including men who oppose the barbarism endemic in Egyptian society. The Muslim Brotherhood which is a cynical group of fascists approves of rape of women whether they be Egyptian or Western women. They wish to subjugate women in Egypt totally. They hate America and the openly say that the Jews everywhere are descended from apes and pigs. Their views unfortunately are the views of the ignorant Arab "street." They unfortunately were the people who elected the Muslim Brotherhood to rule Egypt. America must make it clear that we regard the Muslim Brotherhood as fascists who are our enemies. All U.S. government aid to Egypt must be stopped. The U.S. should work with those in the Egyptian military who are pro-American at least and liberal Muslim and Christian Egyptian women and men to topple the Muslim Brotherhood regime if that is possible and impose the rule of law and end the barbarism, and impose equality of women and the rights of people to live freely. Everything short of free elections must be imposed because Egypt is not mature enough for elections. If we decide not to follow that path then we must boycott Egypt and arm her enemy, Israel so that Egypt can't attack Israel. The fall of Mubarak which was encouraged be CNN and most of Western media and by President Obama ended the hope of Egypt slowly evolving into a liberal democracy. Mubarak understood Egypt but he stubbornly failed to reform his rule. The U.S. should have pushed him harder to make reforms or have military aid cut. No U.S. government pursued that policy. Republican Presidents and Democratic Presidents saw Mubarak as our ally and told him he must liberalize but no U.S government backed up threats with cuts in military aid to Egypt. Obama made the house of cards collapse when he demanded that Mubarak step down. The result: elections that brought to power an anti-American, woman hating, Jew hating, Christian hating government that is our enemy. Now intelligent minds will have to find a way forward. As with Humpty Dumpty the pieces cannot be put together again.

In the book FOR GOD OR FOR TYRANNY written by a former Muslim on page 270 reads "The hatred of women in an Islamic society is so immense that even if a women is raped, she is stoned to death." In Islam there is no limit to just how unfair, unjust and heinous things can be. Furthermore, It is not only very wrong to blame the female who was raped and not the rapist but it's also outragous and absurd.
Moreover, the Bible teaches "Acquitting the guilty and condemming the innocent – the Lord detest the both." Proverbs 17;15. [NIV]

  37. Felicity says:

I've just come back from a month long holiday in Luxor. To read a survey which says 98 percent of tourists were sexually harassed surprises me – I can't understand why it isn't 100percent. If I was shopping and not interested in buying the sales pitch often turned to a blunt request for sex, if you continue not to buy anything the seller might follow you mouthing filth. It was exhausting! Most of the time I was covered neck to toe with a scarf over my head. It didn't help.
On the other hand there were many nice Egyptian men and boys who didn't seem to be completely ruined by that society. I gave one of my young male friends a hug goodbye and he got a massive erection, to be honest I just felt sorry for him. In a 'normal' western society a guy his age would be dating girls, experimenting with sex and possibly have his own car. In Egypt he's hardly ever even spoken to a woman before, let alone kissed one. You can't blame him for being confused. This confusion is of course no excuse for rape or harassment… but it doesn't help.

If you want the rapes to stop in Egypt women need to be treated as humans, not commodities. 95 percent of Egyptian women have had there clitorises and inner labia removed with intent to control their sexual desire and therefore make them docile. You hardly ever see them outside or working, and never at cafes and leisure places which are just occupied by men. Woman are treated as a possession… first by their families and later by their husbands. There needs to be a major attitude change here, and it is more than just religion, politics and education…. there needs to be a complete re-writting of all these things…. but the women themselves need to rise up and fight… I think that is the only way.
