California, which is in a state of perpetually self-inflicted drought, restricts all sorts of practical water solutions based on the idea that they would hurt some living creature somewhere. (People, especially farmers, don’t count.) And along the way the state decided to demolish a dam to help some salmon.
The destruction was celebrated by environmentalists and rubber-stamped by the media.
Native American tribes, environmentalists and state officials have been big advocates for this dam removal. Governor Gavin Newsom announced “California’s Salmon Strategy for a Hotter, Drier Future” in hopes of restoring salmon populations in the state. The governor lists his six priorities: removing barriers and modernizing infrastructure for salmon migration, restoring habitat, protecting water flows, modernizing hatcheries, transforming technology and strengthening partnerships.
Tribal leaders, environmentalists, and state officials are the only people who count in California.
$500 million was spent to make California a worse place. For human beings. And for salmon too.
Hundreds of thousands of young salmon are believed to have died this week at the site of a historic dam removal project on the Klamath River, after an effort to restore salmon runs on the newly unconstrained river went awry, the Chronicle has learned.
The dead chinook salmon were among the first hatchery fish released on the Klamath since four hydroelectric dams were breached near the California-Oregon border, to allow the river to flow freely again and ultimately help fish flourish.
Kill the fish, help the fish, who can tell the difference.
The $500 million dam removal project, which has been in the works for decades, has had no more fundamental aim than to revive salmon on the Klamath River, once the third-largest population on the West Coast.
Did it really?
Maybe I’m a bit of a skeptical fellow, but I don’t believe that anyone actually cared about the salmon. No more than I think that the border wall lawsuits were really about the welfare of a bug. The purpose of these projects is not about fish or bugs. The fish or bugs are a pretext for the actual goal which is wrecking America.
Measured by this standard, wrecking dams and killing hundreds of thousands of salmon is doubly a success.
If the whole thing manages to kill some people too (as long as they’re non-indigenous people who know which gender they are and might have voted for the wrong party), it’ll be a triumphant trifecta.
The worse, the better.
Thanks Daniel!!
If a Republican Governor did this every Gov’t agency would be suing for environmental damage and destruction of natural habitat. Dimocrats are the biggest hypocrites on earth.
The Democrats are trying to create a water shortage to increase their power. A vast and ever increasing bureaucracy is an essential tool for government control of the population. Control of water historically has sometimes been the chief source of government power. The stated purposes of the various agencies are something of a cover story to fool the public and the bureaucrats themselves, the real purpose is government power and control over the population. In this case a bureaucracy to regulate and allocate water, raise revenue by charging higher prices, etc.
SAVE THE INSECTS…I MEAN SALMON!!

“…went awry…” nobody’s fault, it just happened, but it’s okay, they ment well. Can’t blame them for their disasters.
Couldn’t agree more with your assessment, Daniel…and there’s nothing wrong with being a “skeptical fellow”.
“Blind belief in authority is the greatest enemy of truth.”
~ Albert Einstein
the only healthy attitude these days certainly
How did these Satanic overlords like Newscum ever get such power that they are able to destroy one of the glories of Western civilization and technology like this dam?
I mean the very idea is completely insane on every level! I find it incredible that there was no way to stop this insanity which also included taking out TWO other dams as well.
The degenerates/ DemonRats who run the state should be locked up in an insane asylum. They are clearly unfit to be in charge of anything.
you can thank:
Arnold schwarzenegger ‘the governor’ and his ranked choice voting.
The Rinos in CA, put ranked choice voting on the governors desk because
they thought it would be a great way to install more GOP rinos.
however the DNC realized this would leap frog their control and insanity over the state and in a bipartisan vote passed it in 2008.
this is why the DNC has control over the state, once in office they changed all the laws and rules to make sure they would never be kicked out of office.
Arnold wanted to be liked so much that he was disappointed when his republican’s ideas were rejected so in get re-elected after the special election he flipped from trying to push conservative values to hyper left insanity. because of course pushing insanity would make him so popular in the news cycle.
so he left the state a complete disaster for a popularity contest. now its gruesome newsome.
ranked choice voting has been an absolute catastrophe and a great gift to the Left
And Ahrnold was California’s Bloomberg, a social liberal who soon proved to be liberal in most ways, who was never a Republican
Absolutely, it was difficult enough to hold one’s nose to vote for the RINOs put up by the party. Then to have them betray the voters who put them in office was just salt on the gaping wound that is the Once Great State of California.
Excellent comment Daniel! It just occurred to me while reading it, that ranked choice is the best trick yet to get incompetents elected. Because there is more randomness in the outcome.
Most countries build dams, to conserve water, alleviate flooding, and generate electricity. California California is rapidly increasing their population with illegal aliens and bums, and destroying the already insufficient dams/reservoirs, and other infrastructure and agriculture to support them
But don’t worry, mouseboy has first dibbs on the water for his vineyards, and estates, followed by California’s other high to mid-level politicians and bureaucrats. Those tech giants’ estates are next in line, Theirs, stars’ mansions, and their lawns and gardens will always be well watered and green, and they’ll always get to eat real meat.
Everybody else can flush their toilets and take a bath once a week, month, or year, and eat bugs, grubs, or worms for their protein. I don’t think the South and Central Americans they’re importing by the millions will go for that.
When they go much harder the other way on “the environment'”than the the California lefts’ worst ‘Ultra-MAGA Republican’ nightmare, I’m just gonna laugh from the other side of the continent. But then we’re turning good cropland into solar farms here.
The 19th Amendment?
Look deeper into the story and you’ll find that Southern Oregon is very much affected by these blitheringly stupid dam removals. The Klamath Basin’s focus — with VERY divided pro- and anti- sides — has been the recovery of some “trash fish” known as a Lost River Suckerfish and Shortnose Suckerfish. They are “culturally important” to Klamath Basin tribal communities. So… “culturally important” bull$#!+ beats out any and all common sense options for sustainable farming use of properly damned and released water sources.
Look deeper still and you’ll find more $$ at the bottom of this. The tribal authorities have Federal and State exemptions that allow them to operate commercial fishing operations that use normally banned gill nets to catch salmon at the mouth of the Klamath, which significantly depletes the upstream migration population well before the Salmon encounter a dam. They make most of their $$$ and their hope was with the dams gone there would be an increase in the Salmon population, meaning more fish caught and more $$$.
Thank you. That’s really interesting. Will have to look into it.
Also look into the “Native Tribes”. Those the Environmentalists chose to work with are not the aboriginal inhabitants. The Shasta Indian Nation is and their primary burial grounds are located behind Copco Dam. Their villages are documented to be along the Klamath, Shasta and Scott Rivers all the way to Happy Camp. Approximately 95% of Siskiyou County – ignored by Newsom et.al.
Yep. I live here. 3 G Ks part Yurock. I am just waiting to see how long they let the fishery recover before they are out there with their industrial gill nets. Like Libs everywhere, they claim to be, “Keepers of the environment.” And, “Not taking more than they could use.” Liars of course. Keep reading their propagandized history pamphlets and you plainly discern that they were like every other culture. As their technologies improved with European influence, they harvested ever more and canned the fish into near annihilation.
Liberalism is a mental illness.
And next they– Fauci and them– intend to save the world from global warming by blocking the sun. Does playing god lead to Hades? We shall see.
The road to hell is paved by liberal intentions.
Meh — in your assertion you asset liberal= good. I don’t know if I’d go that far… lol, but the road to Hell, they do pave.
Five words always always seem to apply to the damage that liberals predictably do… “Nobody could have predicted this!”
Screw Arnold. Democrats are traitors and are destroying America.
Native tribes want to live back in teepees and run around with bow and arrows again?
You can’t make this stuff up.
Nothing to see here, on to the next exorbitantly expensive idiotic project that will end in disaster.
The Unintended Consequences are always included in the Unspoken Goals.
Unintended doesn’t translate to to Unforeseeable.
According to this article these were hydroelectric dams.
What plans were made to replace these highly efficient and low cost sources of electrical power? What cha think? coal, oil, Nat. Gas, Nuclear, wind, solar? And what about up river? It looks like the water is used extensively for irrigation of farmland, also transport for trees in the lumber industry.
Ah hec!, That’s OK, it’s Oregon.
Wind turbines and solar of course.
The goal is to inflict power shortages along with the drought.
That’s environmentalism.
The dams were not “highly efficient” and “low cost.” They were no longer cost-effective and had no fish ladders. The cost to make the “highly efficient” and “low cost” was cost-prohibitive according to Pacific Power. Leaving them in place was a 100% guarantee that the river would never produce healthy runs of salmon. Removing them will mean that there is a chance it will help. The odds are therefore way better by removing them than by leaving them there. The hate being spread about the dam removal is just ignorance.
Nothing is cost efficient when leftists are involved. Maintaining a dam is much cheaper than destroying it, you’re full of shit.
There never were any salmon above the next to the lowest dam that is going to be removed. There is an 80 foot waterfall just upriver from that dam.
Part if not, all of that drainage is going to dry up in the summer. We’ve already seen drastic drops in the water table since irrigation was greatly curtailed. There will be very little if any groundwater flowing in to the river to keep it flowing during the summer.
I grew up there. It used to be paradise before the commies took over and ruined it.
To Queen of the Jungle: The libs closed and tore down the Insane Asylums long ago in Calif.
Pre-planned? Humm!
Farms and ranches with no irrigation lose value. Lands that drew their supplies off the klamath will now fall into this category. Tribes want to buy cheap land and build out their holdings Let’s watch for upcoming distressed property buys. Great job killing off the fish, tree hugging idiots.
that’s the goal, push out more conservative farmers, bring in special interests and migrant encampments
This isn’t the first fishery that was destroyed in CA by environmentalists. There was one about 20 years ago where they built a fish “ladder” that helped salmon up a stream, but it released minerals that wiped out that river’s salmon population. Liberals are either stupid or enemies of civilization. It is one or the other.
The ichthyologists (people who study fish) that were involved in the decision making process were given bonuses and then promoted and given a substantial pay raise. DEI at it’s finest, right there with the Peter Principle.
they did the job they were meant to do
the ideological one
The people running California must have been out in the sun too long. In addition to depriving citizens of the energy to sustain life there, they have failed to build any reservoirs in forty years. There are currently massive snowstorms in the mountains and when all that snow melts the water will go into the ocean and there will be a drought and water rationing down south this summer. Simply nuts.
not to mention all the rainfall in the city streets
Liberal solutions always, without exception, make the problem addressed worse or impossible to solve. The reason: liberals don’t understand human nature or nature itself. Their reversed mind set botches things up every time.
They understand ideology and assume that ideology reflects reality.
Whether the project to spend other people’s money to “help” salmon succeed or not is immaterial to the crazy Left. The fact that they feel virtuous about it is the only important result. For them only emotion brings affirmation. “Science” is only useful if it reinforces their pre-existing emotions, and so there is no truth, only consensus, a concept that is foreign to the scientific method.
Compounding the madness is the fact that they already have declared the only approved methods for making electricity are the so-called “sustainable” sources — which arguably until now included at least a benign view toward hydroelectric power. Eliminating dams means more emphasis on intermittent power sources such as windmills and solar panels since hydrocarbons are officially being phased out by decree.
The obvious solution is nuclear power — the most efficient, clean, continuous, unlimited, and sustainable method of them all, but committed leftists use lawfare to make certain it takes decades to spool up in an atmosphere of anti-nuclear sentiment the Left has nurtured over decades.
All this combined with urgent, sweeping mandates for electric truck and car fleets, and crumbling power infrastructure means California has plunged headfirst into yet another self-induced crisis. If we allow California to soak the rest of us for federal bailouts, then the problems will only worsen and spread to other states.
After spending so much time visiting the beautiful state of California and observing the negative trends, I have become increasingly fond of saying: “California would be a great place if it weren’t for all the Californians”.
Nuclear power would be the solution if they were honest about the problem. But the problem is another in a series of manufactured crises meant to give them power and de-industrialize the country. That’s why they hate nuclear power even as they can’t explain how solar power is going to save the planet.
But solar is good because it’s inefficient. And inefficiency is the goal.
They also shut down their last nuclear reactor and replaced it with a windmill.
California Demolished Dam to Save Salmon, Killed the Salmon Instead
It was a stupid idea!
I live 12 miles from the dam removal in N Calif. The salmon are not native to the Klamath River. The Indians are being given the land along the river back from the government as they claimed it was taken from them. The scene at the dam sites is apocalyptic. Deer, moose, wild horses, all kinds of smaller wildlife are stuck in the massive mud and dying as they attempt to drink from the once lake.
Fish and Wildlife are shooting the wildlife,as they can’t get them out of massive mud(quicksand.
Massive fish kill, birds, etc. The water is toxic. I have pictures.Apocalyptic!,…..Diane
Thank you. I’ve read reports. It’s horrifying and more people should be talking about it.
Dan, may be a typo in first sentence.
California, which is in a state of perpetually self-inflicted drought, restricts all sorts of practical water solutions based they would hurt some living creature somewhere.. “ based they”?
Just FYI. Hate to negate a great article this way or maybe I’m reading it wrong.
thank you for catching it
Remember when Jerry Brown announced California droughts are the new normal? Now CA precipitation is epic! The Sacramento River is full up! We can’t let the false religion of “global warming” worshipers continue their rant to ruin CA!
they’ll still claim it’s a drought since having a drought gives them power
Unfortunately this is par for the course.
If the masses can be convinced to eliminate CO2 to fight climate change, even though it would cause the extinction of most life on earth, then they can be convinced of anything.
Without carbon dioxide there would be no oxygen. You’d think that would cause the masses to reconsider their support.
The party of science doesn’t have a clue about science. Most of the liberals who support this stuff just chant “listen to the experts”
“The thief comes only on order to steal, kill.& destroy. I came that they may have & enjoy life, and have it in abundance. – John 10:10
Demonic is all that explains the present situation.
Evil in it’s unfettered form is a cancer destroying religion, institutions, cohesion, and memories.
The worst enemy for the Enviroment are t he Enviromentalists themselves like some of the old cures for illnesses were far worst then the illness itself
Once we had conservationists, who thought us stewards of nature. Now we have environmentalists, who have other ideas.
I’ve read many times that CA is the world’s largest outdoor mental institution! I wonder if PRESIDENT TRUMP can declare it a DISASTER AREA and assume Administration of the State?? I guess he could classify it as a MENTAL ILLNESS DISASTER AREA! A “dry run” of taking control of DC should get the courts out of the way!! It’s way past time for SANE people to take charge!
Daniel I retired from the Copco Project after 25 years. They want the salmon to get to Klamath Lake which is imposable. There is or was a Lava dam & waterfall upstream from Copco #1 Dam. and another waterfall in Oregon.
Now that they have Murdered the Klamath River how are the Indians get the Salmon they planed on eating?
Also they wanted the dam’s removed.
Democrats have sought to destroy America since its beginnings. Bit by bit it has chewed away at the fabric that makes this country great. They’ve made unprecedented strides the last 3 years with their puppet leader who’s not lucid enough to push back. Democrats destroy everything they touch.
True. It’s not about the fish.
As Mr. Horowitz quotes SDS, the issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.
so all government, not just in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia fill positions with unqualified folks. you can bet that the lot is full of greenies that feel warm and fuzzy inside but no practical experience.
i remember in san diego when the santa anas were burning the place down and the gov wouldnt put the fire planes in the air, it was too windy. even though the fed and cal fire said it wasnt an issue. so the media asked the PR woman representing the states calfire, “couldnt you have saved hundreds of homes if the planes flew” she explained hinesight was 50-50. the room all laughed, she hadnt a clue until one of her minions whispered its 20-20.
the best view of kalifornia is from your rearview mirror, lived there 62 years and never will go back.
Why can’t anyone speak what they really think, the majority does not count, people do not count, only fish, three legged frogs, American Indians, conservationists, and the hell with anyone else, and to top it all the hell with Newsome and the California politics
Please see us at FDEHydro.com we have a solution that saves the fish and keeps the dam(s).
Just want you to know that you’re part of the problem of the division going on in America right now and you need to write about other things. The radical left and islamism is your topics? Seems a bit too Christian to ignore.
WOW, you must be exhausted trying to come up with a credible red herring.
. Depending on the species a salmon’s life cycle is from 3 to 5 years. They are born in a river tributary and when big enough to survive go out to sea to spend their lives. Near the end of their life cycle they come back to their place of birth to spawn and die. It is instinctual, bred into their being at birth, They can do nothing else. So, they are born, go out to the ocean, spend most of their lives there, then go back to their place of birth to complete the cycle. Now looking at this objectively one should begin to understand these dams don’t have a thing to do with the lack of salmon coming upstream. They would be there if they existed. Since they no longer exist they must have vanished in the ocean. This is the primary argument I have listed in my correspondence, They are being OVERFISHED!!! humans are not the only ones that like salmon so do seals, otters, etc, possibly even sharks.and orcas. Also the foreign fishing fleets with their miles long nets Ah, but they throw any salmon back, Now applying a little logic to this foreign fleet issue they also have canneries with them, along with the fact that by the time the nets are emptied and sorted any salmon that might be included would be dead. There is no profit in throwing a dead fish back so in all probability they are canned too, and sold to other countries. This may better illustrate this, over 45 years ago I was working for Humboldt county driving a dump truck back and forth across the mad river bridge during one of the periodic droughts we experienced there, where the river had slowed to a trickle, we got in that evening and another driver said,. “you guys aren’t going to believe this but on one of my trips I saw a salmon coming upstream and he was carrying a water bag’. For the so called experts, that was a joke. I included this as it covers the determination of a salmon to return to his place of birth. They will arrive or die trying. In reality, these and any other dams don’t have anything to do with the lack of salmon returning. For all of you “EXPERTS”, pay attention, IF A SALMON DOES NOT RETURN UPSTREAM TO SPAWN, HE OR SHE NO LONGER EXISTS.
Mark Bransom and all leaders of KRRC should be held accountable this was totally avoidable. They intentionally released all the damns within a couple days They panicked when the usgs sediment analysis was going to go public. Intentionally and willfully killing millions of protected and endangered spices to ram the project forward at all costs it’s about control and power not the fish as soon as the lakes we empty no trespassing signs were up it’s a land grab plain and simple now the river is dead for 257 river miles choked with clay and sediment ! KRRC is to blame and needs to be held accountable for this disaster!!!
This goes way back. Several years ago Siskiyou County voted against the removal of the dams, in fact it was 87 percent against the removal. Next, the power company charged us a fee on our bills for the removal. After several meetings we realized it was hopeless. Then gov. Jerry Brown and gov. Kate Brown collaborated and signed the agreement to remove the dams. The press celebrated their victory. The Indians claimed removing the dams would increase the salmon. The fact is, they were promised 8,000 acres of drained lake property. It wasn’t about the fish. Now they have destroyed the whole ecosystem. They should be jailed. Wildlife has suffered enough. Deer are trapped in the mud and are put down by Fish and Wildlife officials. There has also been loss of elk, wild horses and birds. They were told the build up of silt would cause problems. They ignored it. Now the silt has even killed the crabs in the ocean. No telling how much damage has been done. Someone needs to be held accountable.
This is no more than a partisan Editorial tantrum lacking substance presented as Journalism.
If David is a credentialed Journalist, he should be ashamed of his evidenced lack of principle and ethics.
So much for presenting facts and info so people can make INFORMED decisions.
Most interesting is a complete lack of any factual details relating to the headline, such as how 800,000 salmon fry were killed.
FYI,
None of the 4 dams being deconstructed have ever been used for irrigation and, thus, have absolutely zero relevance to established farming interests.
