There are reports that the Trump administration is considering a $5,000 ‘baby bonus’ payment to new mothers to boost birth rates. While having a baby comes with a lot of expenses, this is just welfare.
And it won’t boost birth rates.
What it will do is transfer more wealth from the people who should be having children but aren’t, to a welfare population of immigrant and minority single mothers in slum areas. They already have children for welfare payments and $5K will only move so much of the needle. This is a liberal policy being spun as pro-natalist.
The birth rate problem is complicated but we can narrow it down to one core problem.
People are not meeting, forming relationships and marrying. Those who do, increasingly do so late in life.
The reasons for this are cultural, social and economic.
If we’re going to provide any kind of financial incentives, they should be structured as tax benefits for the middle class people and two-income families who are not having enough children because of the cost. That along with making IVF more affordable, as Trump proposed, may move the birth rate needle a bit, but only so much.
The underlying issue is that there’s been a collapse in relationships. Social and economic reasons have convinced younger people to postpone marriage and serious relationships. The two-income family makes larger families nearly impossible. And if we’re going to tackle those things, we need to fundamentally rework cultural messaging, including the emphasis on consumerism and the self, and we also need to significantly reduce college education and higher ed in general for much of the population with the aim of creating an economic where younger people can step into jobs and adult personalities more immediately.
Those are big problems and big goals. A $5,000 check won’t cut it. All it will do is make our existing social problems worse.
True Dat. In the 1950s we had an excellent system. A generous tax credit was given to working families via a large deduction for each child. Then in the 1960s the left switched the tax system to favoring people having no children.
Well there is a ton of stuff more to be said but that’s a start.

It is trendy on the left to. be childless. While thats a concern in terms of birth rate, at least fewer leftists are raising children. If we could reform teachers and freaky librarians pushing porn, we might save the kids we have,
Seriously, making the concept of “ love and marriage” and family – family as the passing down of traditions, yes religious traditions, too. encourages childbearing. Watch any old movie…. finding love, boy meets girl, these themes, were then in mist people’s minds and then in their lives.
I think feminism is largely to blame. It was the beginning of telling women their feminine telos was insufficient for happiness or purpose and they were encouraged to think wives and mothers were unimportant. They were told that they could be just like men in every way (but without the responsibilities of providing and protecting). Corporate American benefitted greatly, also.
Feminism ultimately grew into the trans movement and men began doing the same thing – believing they could be just like women in every way, and men became effeminate, not feminine. They also could not shoulder the responsibilities of motherhood for which women are uniquely made.
Individualism is good, but individuals can only meaningfully exist in community with others. And the basis for community begins with family.
Do Muslim families count? They have a boatload of children everywhere they go. Do Nazi families count? The Nazis strongly promoted their Nazi family “values”, they gave medals to the Aryan women who had the most Aryan babies.
One big issue that should be resolved is the absolute NEGATIVE DEMOcrat ideology! They destroy everything they touch! We need POSITIVE, UPLIFTING people to show that OUR NATION is worth living in – worth fighting for – worth forming a family – worth having children! All these doomsayers need to be exposed for their LIES and DISHONEST intentions!!!
