Centrist Democrats along with some traditional leftists have been making the case that the party needs to pivot away from identity politics and focus on economic issues. But the Left has become as addicted to identity politics as a 1980s crackhead making this a difficult proposition. I would have said it was a nearly impossible proposition until Election Day showed that identity politics had failed the Dems.
But can the Dems kick their identity crack habit?
Or as one DNC member from Florida put it: “I don’t want to be the freak show party, like they have branded us. You know, when you’re a mom with three kids, and you live in middle America and you’re just not really into politics, and you see these ads that scare the bejesus out of you, you’re like, ‘I know Trump’s weird or whatever, but I would rather his weirdness that doesn’t affect my kids.’”
Amid that still-nascent overhaul, a wing of Democrats who believe the party shifted too far to the left is rising up inside the DNC.
“I do think there’s this whole sentiment that we just went too far out there on identity, and it allowed the Republicans to really attack us at every turn as a result, and that we just essentially did not focus on just the everyday issues of Americans,” said one DNC member from California, granted anonymity to speak freely.
Are the Dems about to get normal? The only DNC members seemingly willing to criticize identity politics to Politico are doing so anonymously. Everyone remembers the 2020 reign of terror when people were canceled for even the mildest forms of dissent. DNC members asking for anonymity to say that the party has gone too far isn’t signaling an imminent recovery, but a brief Prague spring before the tankies roll back in.
Can the Dems stop being a ‘freak show party’? To do that they would have to stop letting crazy people call the shots. And what are the odds of that actually happening?
The leftists have been able to call the shots because the Dems no longer really stand for anything, the liberals have been marginalized and there were no longer any brakes to the Left.
This picked up speed with Obama, but it didn’t begin with him.
Right now stunned Dems are contemplating the prospect of actually going back to the party they were in the Clinton era. Or perhaps even earlier when they were actually representing members of the working class. (The 19th century?) All of that would be welcome because nobody wants a freak show party. At least nobody except the Left. And until the Left stops calling the shots, that’s what they will be.

That’s a good, serious question. They are in a delusional state, even if the narrative changes they won’t be able to escape their delusional brain situation.
The Dems seem to be caught in a paradox, damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
The extreme left Moveon.org, as they bluntly stated after raising millions to defend Clinton’s affair with an office intern and lies thereafter, bought the Democrat party and owned it. Not sure how much of a role they played with Obama, but since then there has been nothing too extreme for the Democrat party.
The Left will not cease with identity politics because it is effective. Progressives have successfully perverted the Christian principle of love of self and neighbor into hatred of self and and preferential love the “neighbor” who is a hostile, invading foreigner having no desire to assimilate or know our God. And why would he? He is set on conquest and we are contemptibly weak and willing to accommodate his culture and gods and call it the thing that makes us strong.
Trouble is, they’ve been so crazy for so long that now, even if they say “we’re no longer crazy, no one will believe them. And they shouldn’t.
I like to say, there are many kinds of passengers in the Democrat bus, but only the Left is in the driver’s seat.
In order for evil to prevail, good people have to do nothing.
