On many American campuses, antisemitic nitwits have ever since the beginning of the war in Gaza storm-trooped around, calling for the disappearance of Israel and its replacement by a 23rd Arab state (“From the river to the sea/Palestine will be free”), expressing a wish for homicidal violence against Jews (“Intifada Forever”), and accusing the Jewish state of “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” (“Stop the Genocide”). The worst of these offenders have been the pro-Hamas demonstrators at Columbia University, who have created that awful mess — physical and moral — on Morningside Heights, whom Columbia’s administrators have until now been treated with kid gloves, creating an environment where anti-Israel and antisemitic behavior goes largely unpunished.
Now the Trump administration wants Columbia’s tolerance for antisemitism to be investigated. Columbia, after all, receives $5 billion from federal contracts and grants, and that money which be at risk if Columbia is weighed and found wanting in its failure to protect Jewish students and faculty from the antisemitic bullyboys and brownshirts who threaten them, harass them, surround and hold some of them prisoner, while attacking others, and interrupt, in order to shut down, the classes taught by Israeli and Jewish professors. More on the Trump administration’s investigation — by three different federal agencies — of Columbia, and the possible action by the government to be taken against the university, can be found here: “Columbia’s Choice: Hamasnik Anarchy or Taxpayer Cash,” by Seth Mandel, Commentary, March 4, 2025:
The biggest myth regarding the campus anti-Semitism crisis is that it’s about speech. It is a self-serving myth: Institutions and activists that want to disregard their abuse of Jewish students will fall back on the claim that any attempt to hold them accountable for their actions is actually an attack on free speech.
Columbia University is learning what happens when that disingenuous trick starts to backfire: Students and professors take it as a license to do whatever they want, people end up in the hospital, and the government steps in to say this cannot continue to be done on their dime.
The Biden administration was fearful of standing up to the Hamas youth groups on campus. The Trump administration is happy to do so. Thus we have the announcement that three government agencies—Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and the General Services Administration—will be reviewing federal contracts and grants with Columbia totaling around $5 billion.
Crucially, the announcement clearly avoids the penalizing of mere speech:
“Americans have watched in horror for more than a year now, as Jewish students have been assaulted and harassed on elite university campuses,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement. “Unlawful encampments and demonstrations have completely paralyzed day-to-day campus operations, depriving Jewish students of learning opportunities to which they are entitled. Institutions that receive federal funds have a responsibility to protect all students from discrimination. Columbia’s apparent failure to uphold their end of this basic agreement raises very serious questions about the institution’s fitness to continue doing business with the United States government.”…
One can easily understand why pro-Hamas activists would try to conceal the reality of anti-Semitism under a façade of free expression: The truth is much darker. In many cases, what they are doing is plainly illegal, as is the universities’ allowance of it. In the very best of cases, their actions are simply vile. In both situations—that is, in every case almost without exception—they are the party that is curtailing the freedoms of others. That is obvious even if the brownshirts aren’t wearing brown shirts and the white-hoods aren’t wearing pointy pillowcases on their heads….
Appeals to Columbia’s administration, and especially to its president Manouche Shafik, by Jewish students and faculty who have been harassed or attacked or had their classes disturbed, have not led to anything. The students and non-students who took over Hamilton Hall, where they proceeded to do several million dollars in damage, and held hostage four members of the janitorial staff who were trying to prevent them from vandalizing university property, have not been punished. While hundreds of students (and many non-students) have been involved since 2024 in pro-Hamas protests on the Columbia campus since October 7, 2023, less than two dozen have been suspended, and even then they have soon been reinstated, save for two Barnard girls and three graduate students who, however, are expected to ultimately be reinstated. A total of three Columbia students have been expelled. That is not much of a deterrent.
Now Columbia faces investigations about its failure to adequately assure the safety and wellbeing of Jewish students and faculty, and its failure, too, to properly punish the pro-Hamas students who engaged in vandalism of university properties and held four janitors hostage. Three separate federal agencies are involved in these investigations — Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and the General Services Administration. The five billion dollars that Columbia receives each year from federal contracts and grants are now uncertain. Appeals to morality have not worked to change the invertebrate behavior of Columbia’s administrators. Now the prospect of a huge financial loss may stiffen their spines.
When I found out that Egyptian born Manouche Shafik was president of Columbia U. it all started making sense. This “person” is a Muslim.
I would bet that the school is riddled with Muslims, many not students, who are there simply to agitate and harass Jews. After all, Mahmoud Khalil is no longer a student there, but somehow finds the time be at the school all the time. Deport his sorry a$$.
Columbia U. has always been a problem. It is pretty much a communist front, engaged in insurrection against the U.S. Many of the Communists associated with the Frankfurt School were given teaching positions after escaping Nazi Germany. They should have been deported after it was clear they were agitating against the U.S., particularly Herbert Marcuse and Theodore Adorno.
This is the school that harbored Cloward and Piven, the frauds who came up with the scam “The Weight of the Poor” designed to bankrupt the U.S. It is currently the go to plan for the current Democrat party’s platform
And who else went there? None other than our gay communist “president”, Barack Obama.
Manouche Shafik should be fired. It’s endowment should be seized. Fire the staff and the communist sympathizers masquerading as legit teachers. The school definitely needs a Muslim and Communist enema cleansing.
Or perhaps, raze the school to the ground. It’s simply churning out enemies of the state.
ABSOLUTELY. In what world do such criminal actions continue unchecked???!
Ina world where self indulgent Leftists run the government and the MSM.
Back about 1969 I was in University in Caliornia. I ok a ull year course in Political Philosophy. We studied the ideas and principles of Karl Marx. We larned how o analise his ideas, and see where they would lead… and did lead in history. The final exam for the year long course was this:
identify at least three of his ideas and principles that are wrong, could not work, led to bad consequences, and explain WHY they were flawed, WHY they will not bring about good.
Of the ninety two students in that class there was precisely ONE who identified the requisite three erroneous principles, AND explained HOW or WHY they are flawed. He is presently commenting in a forum that could not have existed back in that time.
My strong position is that Herbert Marcuse, the Professor of that year long course, is not the rabid communist so many claim him to be. In his daily lectures he taught us HOW to critically examine another’s thoughts and principles and to understand how such ideas actualy function to being about change in society.. for good or bad. This skill has persisted in my own self now over some fifty plus years. Let me learn a bit about what a given speaker/writer proposes, and I can tell within minutes whether he is promoting good or evil, success or failure.
I have not persisted in following Marcuse in the interim since that excellent and valuable year long study under him, so I cannot say unequivocably that he never deviated from what I know of him by up close and personal interaction and ling in depth exposure to his mind and thinking.
What in the world could they do that is worth 5 billion dollars?
overfeed and luxuriously house a gaggle of worthless stuffed shirt “perfessers”?
A petition with 40,000 signatures demands that Columbia professor, JOSEPH MASSAD, be fired. He’s been inciting this antisemitism for decades and after David Horowitz went after him for kicking a Jew out of his class, Columbia granted him TENURE. Now untouchable? The University protects him claiming free speech… but what do the laws of the U.S. government say about this man?
Is he aiding any terrorist group, directly or indirectly, using a proxy, an Imam, a radical at a Mosque? Impossible that he isn’t considering his hatred.
What’s he saying in his classes, in his office, his car, his home? INCITING AND DIRECTING THIS, INCLUDING DIRECTING THE STUDENT LEADER THAT WAS ARRESTED? SURELY THERE IS A CONNECTION!
CUT OFF ALL $$$! They don’t need it or deserve it… and that goes for all these Universities including our University of New Mexico in Albuquerque that is also under investigation! THEY’RE ALL CORRUPT! For example, an encampment on our campus last May resulted in a takeover of the Student Union building. The UNM PD and State Police cleared it out but they still caused $40,000 in damages with SIXTEEN ARRESTS…. ALL CASES DISMISSED! One woman from Jewish Voice for Peace told me, after me pretending to support them since I know their language, said, “HAMAS DIDN’T DO ENOUGH!” This middle-aged woman was there to recruit and brainwash students.
Milo Yiannapolus came, he needed four police agencies, a swat team, some on horses, to protect him. Also damages, no police report filed. The Mob won.
Tomi Lahren came, mob easily broke into the Student Union, kicked holes in the walls, pulled a fire alarm, tried to break into the ballroom, pushed cops, and police took her out only twenty minutes into her speech. She stopped three times asking the organizers if she, and us, were safe. Now we were stuck in there for an hour as I called 911 three times since female students were crying hysterically. I arrived early to make sure the UNMPD could handle a mob. The doors to the building were locked. They easily got in. NO POLICE REPORT EXCEPT MINE! DAMAGES? The director of the Union: “We took care of it internally!” YOUTUBE VIDEOS, PHOTOS, AND NOT ONE STUDENT WAS REFERRED TO THE DEAN OF STUDENTS OR PRESIDENT! THEY WON!
The campus is the smallest stage where Islamic assholes play out their miserable agenda. real More significant battles against them will be fought in the cities. Or as they say in Hollywood: COMING TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU.
Time to cut off all funding for these places by 100%
Invertebrates don’t have spines.
