One woman who certainly isn’t celebrating America and Columbus Day is Kamala Harris, the daughter of a Marxist economist and an America-hating immigrant, who had pledged to get rid of Columbus Day.

Replacing Columbus Day with ‘Indigenous People’s Day’ is part of the radical leftist anti-American agenda.
On a previous Columbus Day, Kamala had complained that “since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas. But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story. Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations. Perpetrating violence, stealing land and spreading disease. We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it.”

Today, Kamala, who reinvented herself more times than a soda brand, is quiet about her thoughts on Columbus Day. While she is primarily focused on winning the Hezbollah vote in Michigan, Italian-Americans still vote, and so do normal Americans who don’t want to chop down all the statues.
But those are her values and as she likes to say, her values of hating America, never changed.
In 2019, Kamala tweeted that, “Indigenous People’s Day is a time to recognize the suffering and oppression the Indigenous community has endured.”
Kamala may be a Walmart version of Obama, but it’s still Obama’s hatred for America underneath the pants suits.
The Aztecs were among the most advanced of the indigenous peoples. They had large scale agriculture & cities amongst other things. They also practiced human sacrifice & cannibalism. What part of that does Kamala want to bring back? I am glad we won & they lost

Columbus protected natives of the islands he went to from Indians from other islands who were practitioners of cannibalism. Perhaps, Captain Kirk would not have “interfered.”

I read about Maori Polynesians doing that, too. One tribal chieftain declared a magnanimous peace with a weaker neighboring tribe. The neighboring tribe repaid his civilized overture by slowly sending its”warriors” to live with the nonbelligerent ones until all of them were there. Then they overwhelmed them while many of their hunters were gone bagging game, put them in pens and ate them at their leisure.
I never have liked Polynesians overly much although I’ve known some cool ones. They tend to be big guys. The usual suspects in West Seattle were terrified of them. They’d shoot at them in buses and then jump out windows while the bus was moving to escape the wrath of the enraged Kanakas.

To be fair: the Scandinavian explorers did say something, and the message was not received as it was taken to be just the ravings of barbarians and fishermen.
Columbus was the first person to document his exploration and publish in an language everyone could understand. He also acted under authority vesting his exploration with the indicia of respect and veracity.
We live in an age of vile anti-leadership – under the rule of ignorant, stupid, wicked, psychotic criminals – pardon for not having enough words for these disgusting people –
But Columbus sailed in a much more naive and simple age. And for all the faults of the Spanish crown, they thought they were doing their best.

The thing about spreading disease really bugs me. Revisionist history, projecting modern medical understanding onto the 1500s. Even from books written in the late 1800s I was reading yesterday about cases where the author didn’t understand the causes of such diseases as scurvy and cholera.
Silly footnote: I may have been the one responsible for the estimate that 90% of the indigenous population in those areas got wiped out by disease. I was asked to estimate such for a history book from some data the authors had acquired 🙂
I had a lot more confidence then than I do now. It may be that the estimate is wrong, and some future historian can make a career out of refuting it 🙂

Christopher Columbus did everything in his power to preserve the dignity and rights of amerindians, protect them from the well documented cruelty and exploitation of the Spaniards and even to save their souls. As a devout Catholic, he believed baptism is necessary for salvation and did all he could to provide the amerindians with the means to achieve it.
He wrote:
“I gave them many beautiful and pleasing things, which I had brought with me, for no return whatever, to win their affection, and that they might become Christians and inclined to love our King and Queen and Princes and all the people of Spain; and that they might be eager to search for and gather and give to us what they abound in and we greatly need.”
Samuel Eliot Morison wrote in “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” that:
Columbus was a Man with a Mission, and such men are apt to be unreasonable and disagreeable to those who cannot see the mission…He was Man alone with God against human stupidity and depravity, against greedy conquistadors, cowardly seamen, even against nature and the sea.
He was admired and even beloved of the Catholic Priests who knew him.
On his second voyage in 1493, he brought 17 shiploads of Spanish settlers to Hispaniola and was governor. While he was exploring other islands his officers lost control of the settlers, who mistreated the amerindians because they hadn’t got the fortunes in gold they expected. When he returned in 1494, he was pressured under threat of murder into impressing some of the amerindians into labor and even slavery but put an end to all that the next year, He executed the worst Spanish offenders. 1495. He worked all that year to establish and maintain harmony and order on the island. He returned to Spain in 1496 and made plans for his third and final voyage.
