What to say about the widespread pro-Hamas protests? Protesters block the highway leading to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Protesters stop traffic on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. A mob of protesters chanting “Senate can’t eat until Gaza eats” marched into the Dirksen Senate Office Building and caused the cafeteria to shut down. Something like that used to be called “insurrection.” Pro-Hamas protesters in Dearborn, Michigan, chant not only “Death to Israel” but “Death to America.”
On Oct. 7 last year, Hamas, the anti-Israeli, anti-Jew terror group, committed an unprovoked mass murder of nearly 1,200 Israelis, including men, women and children. Hamas terrorists raped women, beheaded victims, and took hundreds hostage, including some Americans.
In the days that followed, at least in America, condemnation of Hamas’ slaughter, the most horrific assault on Jews since the Holocaust, seemed universal. Most Americans applauded when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “crush” Hamas. But in very little time, as the Israeli military proceeded to carry out that objective, the chorus of those accusing Israel of “overreacting” turned into an even louder chorus accusing Israel of committing “genocide.”
Genocide? The accusation requires a willful dismissal that Hamas by design embeds itself among Palestinian civilians and builds military installations beneath schools, mosques, and hospitals to invoke the cry of “genocide” by Israel’s enemies and by those who should know better.
Many college students either do not know or do not care that Israel has traded land for peace and has proposed many other “peace plans” only to suffer continued homicide bombings and rockets launched into Israel from Lebanon by Hezbollah, another Iran-backed terror group like Hamas, and rockets launched into Israel by Hamas from Gaza.
Those chanting “From the river to the sea” either do not know or do not care that there was NEVER a country called Palestine. The chant refers to the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea and completely omits one nagging thing — the country of Israel.
Urban warfare, by definition, results in civilian casualties. So, is the U.S. guilty of genocide? About the United States’ campaign to crush ISIS, RAND wrote:
The United States had promised the most precise air war in history to destroy the Islamic State across its strongholds in Iraq and Syria. Yet by the end of the U.S.-led battle for Raqqa, the group’s de facto capital, as many as 80 percent of the buildings were deemed uninhabitable. Several thousand civilians who had survived months of shelling and street fighting had nowhere to go for safe drinking water within the wreckage.
Researchers from RAND spent months analyzing the battle and asking what the United States could have done better to protect those civilians from the harms of war. They found that military leaders too often lacked a complete picture of conditions on the ground; too often waved off reports of civilian casualties; and too rarely learned any lessons from strikes gone wrong. Raqqa may have been a victory, but it was also a smoldering monument to how much more the military could do to protect civilians.
How many ISIS fighters were killed compared to the number of civilians killed? Estimates differ widely depending on whether the numbers come from our military, terror groups, human rights organizations, or others.
About the U.S.-led campaign to eliminate the ISIS caliphate, The Washington Post in November 2020 wrote:
Frequently, multiple airstrikes occurred close to the same area on a single day. For the more than 1,400 civilian deaths it has acknowledged to date, the U.S. military previously provided only general information about the incidents and their locations, compounding the challenge of determining who died, when, and where.
Hamas expected a forceful Israeli response to cause widespread Palestinian casualties, a number the terrorists will dutifully inflate. The plan is as simple as it is evil. Hamas sees the massacre of Israelis followed by massive and unavoidable Palestinian deaths as the price of the ticket. Hamas counts on anti-Israel sentiment and Jew-hatred in Western countries to tie Israel’s hands and eventually force the United States to turn its back on its onetime vital ally. It increasingly looks like Hamas bet correctly.
“Something like that used to be called “insurrection.” Only when peaceful conservatives do it.
Thanks Larry.
As Biden flip flops on America’s strongest ally, the American people become stronger supporters of Israel… sort of same result as Biden’s mis-treatment of the American Consitution is strengthening Trump. Israel must stay true to its conscience regarding the Oct. 7/23 attempted and continuing voiced plan of genocide of Jews in Israel.Hamas must be destroyed at all costs…it has declared war on the world…1400 years of terror by a malfunctioning political religion.
An excellent article Mr. Elder, thank you.
The length of the war has given the other side, the virus side, time to organize worldwide. But Israel has finally started the clean-up operation in Rafah. Quitting now would be like a runner stopping 30 feet from the finish line because some of the spectators in the stands were booing him.
I believe we may try to distinguish between the American public and the American media/academia/elite manipulators.
Just as we must understand that our media/etc are not our culture, however much they may believe that they are.
It is not over yet.
While there is some truth to that point of view Larry, I believe Hamas did not calculate that Israel would follow through with their complete destruction. They calculated that Israel would cave to international pressure and that seems not to be the case.
Israel’s enemies decades ago realised that as long as US military hardware kept being delivered they could never ultimately win militarily.
The Iranian backed Muslim Brotherhood, its numerous affiliated Islamist organizations and “progressive” left opportunists alternative strategy became one of infiltrating government institutions, civil society and academia in order to stop that US direct support to Israel.
This “infiltration” strategy has been pursued across the West under mass muslim immigration and the consequences of that. Along with the increased influence Muslim sectarian issues are having in the political landscape throughout the Anglosphere.
In Great Britain the universities have admitted an increasing number of fee-paying “students” from muslim nations who have infected academia with their anti-Jew hatred and political Islam allied with “social justice warriors” ready to jump on the next bandwagon that comes along.
The Hamas attack on Oct.7 was a deliberately barbaric act in order to get Israel to respond with overwhelming force. The fact that the well coordinated “free Palestine” protests started even before Israel military campaign got under way clearly demonstrated this was next part of a calculated strategy. A strategy to bury the Hamas atrocity in the media under the weight of the “free-Palestine-ceasefire-now” protests. Hamas propaganda has been brilliantly carried out with the help of a compliant uncritical anti-Israel western media.
The results of the non-military campaign are becoming evident as Biden has bowed down to it and is slowing or reducing ammunition supplies to Israel, Great Britain is considering reducing military aid as are other supposed allies of Israel.
If this happens Israel will be much more vulnerable to Iran and its proxies winning the military war as well as the propaganda war.
Does anyone else suspect that the attack on Oct 7th was a very carefully planned event to put into play for a series of events that would lead up to the USA eventually needing to declare a state of emergency just in time for …. wait for it….. when the elections are supposed to take place in November? People need to look outside the box and pay attention. It is easy to see how this situation could be used by opportunists to work in their favour. Covid demonstrated how easy it was to go into full toltalitarian mode and have the governemnt control everyones movements.. Despot are not easily removed from their perch. Things could get a lot worse in the next coming months. Much much worse. Keep your eyes wide open .
