My previous favorite in the genre of ‘tariff horror stories’ meant to impress ordinary Americans was the Wall Street Journal warning that tariffs would prevent the working class from being able to afford $64K SUVs, but this Axios piece is even better.
Dems and their media have been trying to rally opposition to tariffs by trying to show how they would hurt ordinary Americans. How about showing the impact of imported French wine on the working class?
Where wine tariffs would hit hardest – Axios
U.S. wine importers spent $6.8 billion to bring wine into the country in 2024, 80% of which went to producers in the European Union, per the American Association of Wine Economists.
“It’s a financial death sentence,” according to wine importer Lyle Fass, who explains that millions of dollars’ worth of wine is already paid for, and on ships headed for the U.S., and that if those imports are suddenly hit with 200% tariffs on arrival, most importers simply won’t have the money to pay what they owe.
Sacre bleu!
If it’s a choice between French wine and having actual American manufacturing and economic independence, it’s not really much of a choice. Sure, like most Americans, I enjoy the occasional 1869 Chateau Lafite Rothschild in between trips to my private island, but I suspect I will survive. So will most Americans.
Our ancestors held a tea party. We can hold the imported wine.
Wait. U.S. wine importers spent 6.8 billion to bring wine into the country in 2024, 80% of which went tp producers in the Europea Union. The imported the wine in order to export it?
California wine is better 🙂
But if some individual American wants to purchase French wine, that should be none of the governments business. They shouldn’t put their hands on the scale with tariffs.
No, President Trump should just let the Frenchies stand on their scales and laugh at us.
As if the surrender monkeys won’t back down from a 200% tariff on their wines and spirits, Monsieur Crétin.
That 200 percent tariff is actually on Americans, not the French. Trump actually thinks the French pay that tariff!
President Trump thinks your snail slurping buddies will lower their onerous tariffs rather than suffer 200% of his wrath, and he’s right.
Now go nibble some TDS cheese and pretend it’s French, rat-boy.
Yes, and you can see through California wines. If I want some toe jam floating around, I’ll invite over the chick who always sands her feet callouses when she’s here.
Not just California wine is good or great. Many other states produce great wine also. Washington and Oregon for instance..
I visited a vineyard in the Olympic Peninsula. The wine was sweet but very good. It’s very hard to make soil arid in Western Washington but those guys did a good job!
Oregon has a lot of wines in the big wine and liquor stores. They’re quite good.
Americans don’t need the smelly Frenchies.
Let us all sacrifice ourselves for the common good. The tribe, the race, the nation come before the individual. Selfish individuals need to be put in shackles. Or in death camps.
We must destroy freedom to save freedom. We must destroy individual rights to save individual rights.
The selfish individual only interested in his personal pursuit of happiness, only interested in his individual liberty, only interested in living his life as a private citizen, minding his own business, must be sacrificed to the selflessness of collectivism.
So, is it in the “common good” for consumers to become poorer because of higher prices?
I think his comment is sarcasm! But I’m not 100 percent sure.
But yea, protectionists somehow think if we pay higher prices and reduce our buying power with tariffs, we’ll all be better off!
MAGA Americans know Trump Tariffs don’t affect the prices we pay, just the profits our economic enemies earn.
Save your Wall Street Yellow Journal shit for the flies. Americans don’t dig mercantilism.
Taxes don’t affect prices you say, only profits? Wow!
You seriously are on something my friend! Please be sober before commenting on here. Otherwise you are just wasting everyones time.
You are delusional buddy!
What taxes would those be, Mikey?
Try not to lick too many guys’ buttholes today.
My comment is sarcasm.
Kind of figured! But I’m slow some days, wasn’t sure!
Would that be slow on days of the week that end in “day?”
I admit interpreting the sarcasm as in support of the tariffs. If I was mistaken, my apology.
Do you apologize for supporting America’s economic enemies over Americans?
That’s a rhetorical question.
C’mon T. You couldn’t find sarcasm with two hands and a flashlight.
It’s the Froggy vintners who are going to have to sacrifice, not American consumers. And only black chicks drink brandy, and none of the ones I know waste money on the French stuff. American brandy is yummy.
“And only black chicks drink brandy…”
Thank you for posting so many things I can use in future posts.
Oh, that’s right. You hate black people. I guess that includes the chicks.
Uh, the article is about French wine. Not your silly social theories. I guess you can’t afford French wine.
You should drink some American CA wine. Or any other cheap swill. Maybe a box wine Rose. The box wines are a favorite of the faux intellectual unmarried angry liberal white women. It would probably mellow you out and normalize you.
You definitely have some problems.
I’m still working on a case of assorted red wines from Italy that I purchased through a Wall Street Journal Wine Club. What exactly do you think the Italians do with those American dollars they get when they export to the U.S.? Tell us about the benefit of a capital account surplus, genius.
Your problem is an inability to actually refute things people say. If you think for a second I’ll back down from lame comments, you got the wrong American in mind.
“Silly social theories?” Maybe you’ll need to be reincarnated as someone who can articulate a convincing refutation of an assertion.
I’ve been married for 45 years. My wife drinks hard cider and hard seltzer.
I wish Trump new what foreigners do with all those ‘American dollars’. Then he wouldn’t tax us with all those insane tariffs!
Where do you live? Fantasy Land? In a trailer? And your wife sounds like a dude. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Your problem is you seem stuck on telling us how “wonderful” you are, as if it will (1) impress us and (2) intimidate us.
So you purchased a case of “assorted red wines” through the oh so prestigious Wall Street Journal Wine Club. I stopped reading the WSJ at least 10 years ago. So….not impressed.
I have never heard of capital account surplus. So……not impressed.
Telling folks how they all have lame comments, or can’t refute what you say is irrelevant to me. So……not impressed. Simply because you can’t refute what I say, simply means you have a limited ability to exist in the real world. So you turn to cheap little insults But that seems to to be your modus operandi. You are a pathetic blowhard who lives in a child’s fantasy world….the college campus. Other than being a guy who teaches a stupid Econ 101 course is not exactly the most impressive thing in the world. So……not impressed.
I have a feeling you don’t have much to say about anything beyond your little classroom world of things that are pretty much irrelevant to everyone else.
BTW, I love your silly threat to use what we say against us later. You are always good for a laugh.
No one cares how long you have been married. No one cares about your wife either.
Is that supposed to intimidate me?
Once again Daniel focuses on one item, most of us do not consume and ignores the many studies that show how consumers are worse off because of tariffs. 20% tariffs were placed on imported steel . Within a few months, surprise, surprise, surprise, steel prices were 18% higher. (Apologies to Gomer Pyle.) When the cost of inputs goes up, companies raise prices.
Those who can’t understand that should simply consider why the price of gasoline varies so much. (Hint: it’s because oil prices vary.)
A tariff is a tax,. A tax is a cost. Do higher costs lead to higher prices? Here in Democrat dominated, fiscally nightmarish Illinois, the gas tax was raised 20 cents per gallon. Any educated guess as to what subsequently happened to the price of gasoline?
We don’t need to leave the comment section to find people who assert that tariffs do not raise prices. There are people still expecting Bigfoot will be found.
How many supporters of tariffs can explain that a deficit in the current account means a surplus in the capital account? How many can explain the benefits of a surplus in the capital account?
Good comment. Nothing good ever comes with these foolish protectionist policies.
A tariff is a tax , period. A reciprocal tariff is also just a tax. No matter how you polish that t#$d, a tariff is still just a tax, a tax on top of all the other taxes we pay.
And yet contrary to the neocons and other lefties in the D-Bag party and at The Wall Street Journal, prices are steadily decreasing.
Canada, Mexico, the UK, Japan and especially China have all acquiesced to Trump’s tariffs without raising prices and France will soon follow suit.
Stock prices are harder to manipulate now, boo hoo, Gordon Gecko.
Prices are steadily decreasing? Is it April 1st again already? What did the most recent CPI and PCE reports indicate? Is it Just Make Crap Up Wednesday again?
The Wall Street Journal are “lefties.” That is some unintentionally funny stuff.
Here’s the evidence you’ve provided that the stock market is manipulated–> <–
Tariffs are intended to increase the price of imports. What happens to gasoline prices when the government increases the per-gallon tax?
I seem to remember, during Trump 1.o, the Dow was up, my stocks were through the roof and gas averaged around $2.50 per gallon. Inflation was non existent. People like you just couldn’t stand it so you tried to blame Covid on Trump, Biden shut the economy down, kids were out of school, and everything went to shit. And of course there was Kamala and her word salads.
We finally are getting back on track. My energy ETF is steadily rising. My gold purchases are through the roof and silver is also climbing. But you are so focused on tariffs, you just can’t see the big picture.
So glad I don’t associate with pin-head progressives like you. Please, stay pissed off. You are a hoot.
The CPI and PCE are as honest and believable as the CBO, DOE and the Wall Street Journal, which is to say not at all. In fact, they’re bullshit factories.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CPI dropped from .05 in Bidenflation January to 0.2 in Titanic Trump February, and that’s pretending the BLS statistics during Alzheimer Joe’s regime were real, which they weren’t.
Prices went down across the board in February and that includes gas prices. They’re still going down right now in March.
All REAL sources prove prices are going down, and that includes President Trump and my own eyes. Gas, propane, groceries including even eggs, household items, TVs, Laptops, lumber and on and on.
The only thing increasing is stock prices, ha haw!
Trollfail, you TDS D-Bag.
Well, I live on planet Earth. Most people do. I don’t know where you live in your imagination.
“Stocks are harder to manipulate now…” Tell us why Tesla has dropped almost 50% since Trump was elected. Did Trump and Musk stop the manipulation keeping the price so high? This is going to be good!
Tesla stock hasn’t dropped 50%, liar, and the temporary dip was caused by you D-Bag terrorists torching Tesla lots. Now people can buy low and sell high, or just wait a bit for Tesla stocks to go back up higher than ever and hold onto them.
And they caught three of your dickless D-Bag buddies who torched those Teslas in lots in Vegas and wherever else, and Trump’;s AG, Pam Bondi, is ensuring they get 5 to 20 in Shank City prison. And Teslas have about six cameras in them so Turds like you will get caught too, if you vandalize any.
TROLLFAIL, TDStard, as always. Go invest in Hamas.
Ok genius. So if you tax a certain product , the price won’t go up according to you?
Can you even do 1st grade math or kindergarten economics?
OK, Einstein. Why haven’t Canadian, Mexican, UK or Chinese prices gone up?
And economics isn’t taught in Kindergarten because it isn’t a science.
TROLLFAIL. The pain you feel because President Trump is making America great again must hurt even worse than your butt herpes.
I can’t believe how many good conservatives have fallen for this protectionist nonsense. Maybe they are in a trance with Trump. Like he is some know all God like figure!
That’s because you’re not a good conservative, you’re a leftist with a terminal case of TDS.
Remind us: what POTUS said “It’s the Republican Party, not the Conservative Party?”
Remind us; how long till your TDS tumor kills you and the American gene pool improves? Not that any chick would ever have a kid with you.
Are you stupid?
Why do so many CONservatives think responding to foreign protectionism is ‘protectionism?’
Do you make your money effing the rest of us?
If not, you’re a fool. And stupid.
Because responding to protectionism is protectionism. If other nations tax their citizens with tariffs, must our government be stupid enough to charge us taxes(tariffs) for imports?
When other countries charge tariffs for imports, they are hurting themselves. It is shooting ourselves in the foot to match those tariffs.
Only idiot protectionists can think that reciprocal tariffs are a good idea!
He’s one or the other, that’s for sure. Probably both. Effing us AND a stupid fool.
America won Last November and the D-Bags lost, so he’s hating life.
Well, you piss poor liar, tariffs are up and prices are down. Foreign steel and aluminum prices are NOT up. Japan wisely cooperated with President Trump’s increased tariffs and Canada backed down from President Trump’s increased tariffs both times it threatened retaliatory tariffs – both times the very next day!
Those who can’t understand that should simply consider why the price of gasoline varies so much. (Hint: it’s because Alzheimer Joe’s handlers gutted American oil and gas production.) It went WAY up under Joke Bidumb and it started its downward trend the first month President Trump came back.
Excessive foreign tariffs on American goods and services are excessive taxes on Americans. Tariffs on foreign goods and services Americans don’t need don’t affect Americans and prices have gone down anyway.
You Dirtbagocrat traitors are dumb as fuck with your lies.
Ironic. You assert prices are down when the most recent CPI and PCE reports demonstrate the opposite.
I quote you: “Tariffs are not intended to raise the prices of imports, nor will they significantly.”
Using two carefully labeled graphs, and assuming any logical numbers, show and explain the impacts of tariffs on the market for imported goods and the market for domestic goods.
Commence with the telling name calling.
See my comment above, Tampon Tim. CPI and PCE reports as as fake as DOE, CBO and CNN reports.
I don’t need the understated BLS statistics to confirm what I see at all my local gas stations and retail outlets. Tariffs are up and prices are down.
Trump Über Alles, bitch. Now you can get a discount on your tampons, Timbecile. Say thanks to Big Don.
I admit I used to use foul language to impress people, but then I graduated from junior high school .
I like the way you think! I still use foul language but never around my wife!
Sorry you didn’t make it to high school. Working as a crash test dummy and using computers at your local library must be tough. Good thing for you Trump is President again and prices are down. Maybe you can afford that pink Beyonce wig you’ve had your eye on.
You are just another idiot protectionist. Trumps tariffs are just another tax on Americans period, no matter how you try and polish that t*&d!
Trump simply isn’t smart enough to understand that.
Trump is smart enough to know that prices are down and so are Americans.
Stop hammering nails with your forehead.
I paid $3.00 for a gallon of gas yesterday. Prices are coming down since January.
So it’s Illinois, the armpit of the midwest. It’s not even Monmouth U. in NJ. Just dippy little Monmouth College. If you are so damn smart why don’t you leave the state where you are being ripped off by that fat a$$ governor Pritzker. Maybe he will join that rogues gallery of Governors who went to jail.
But it does explain a lot about you. I’m starting to think you have a massive inferiority complex Ritchie, always telling us how we can’t breathe that rarified air that only you get to breathe.
In addition to excellent American wines, we have great Argentine, Australian, and Chilean wines on hand in this republic. If the European vintners want to lower their prices or their governments want to reduce their taxes to keep wines from the EU cost-competitive in the face of tariffs that would be nice.
What would not be nice would be for sellers in America to raise prices across the board to capitalize on the increased price of EU sourced wines. We have seen this happen in the spririts sector, where Japanese owners of American distilleries have raised the price of Bourbon and Kentucky Whiskey as the UL taxes on Scotch Whisky have raised prices significantly.
Spanish and New Zealand wines are good, too. South African ones used to be good but the genocide of white farmers includes vintners so we’re going to lose that source. The vintners and farmers still there will be living here soon anyway, so everybody wins except the South African blacks who will have to rely on Western charity once the whites are gone.
Well I don’t drink at all and I’m surviving just fine thank you.
Remembering back to those days Wine Commercials like PUT A ROSE IN YOUR GLASS and this Classic THE LITTLE OLD WINE MAKER they little man speaking German
Even back in the days of the Roman Empire, Emperor Augustus preferred German wines.
Mr Greenfield.
It’s not your choice if someone chooses American or imported products. It should be none of the governments business. This is supposedly a free market economy.
If it’s a choice between French wine and having actual American manufacturing and economic independence, it’s not really much of a choice.”
We are now a service and IT heavy economy. And we are much wealthier for it. You are endorsing a form of central planning. Protectionism is foolish and is nothing more than economic central planning.
Will you quit your job Mr Greenfield and go work in a boring and monotonous manufacturing job making T-shirts? Who will? American will have to quit what they’re doing now to take these imaginary manufacturing jobs coming in.
We have 8 million job openings and only 6 million unemployed. Lets bring in 10 million more jobs just so we can pay higher prices and we can all be poorer!
I suppose you support illegals coming over the border by the truck load.
Do the country a favor and let them stay in your home without taxpayer support.
Did is say I support open borders? Only protectionist idiotic thinking can make that connection!
Tariffs are just a tax on Americans, reciprocal or not.
I’m against additional taxes on Americans, even if other nations are stupid enough to charge their citizens tariffs for imports.
Anti-tariff = anti-Trump, anti-peace, anti-prosperity, anti-American, anti-Musk, anti-astronaut rescues, anti-price decreases and anti-IQ.
There’s no such thing as a free economy and Americans are glad President Trump has countered onerous foreign tariffs on our goods and services with fair ones on theirs.
Prices are down and will continue to go down while Trump is President. Get used to crying in your cups for the next three years and ten months. The price of French wine is about to go down, traitor.
Educate us. Who nominated Jerome Powell to be Chair of the Federal Reserve? We’ll wait.
Who cares. He hasn’t been the best chair of the Fed anyway. You will have a long wait Mr. Snooty de Snoot Snoot.
You are so busy trying to impress everyone with your smarty pants “intelligence” you just don’t realize what a class A jerk you are. It’s clear you are a silly puffed up liberal, sitting up there in the rarified atmosphere of Mt Monmouth. Perhaps you have done too much paper shuffling.
I would rather hang with Jeff B. any day than have to put up with an over educated snob like you.
I’m sorry. Did you need a trigger warning? Want me to send photos of kittens and puppies?
Like Jeff B., your responses are juvenile. At least you don’t need to resort to foul language.
Your comments demonstrate total cluelessness. “Puffed up liberal?” Which would you rather I do first, take down the Blue Lives Matter flag on my front porch or take down the large photo of Thomas Sowell on my office door?
What’s your favorite book by Thomas Sowell? Mine is Knowledge and Decisions. I assigned The Vision of the Anointed to the students in the course on liberty that I’ve taught many times. I also assigned Tammy Bruce’s book. Ever read John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty. My students have
In the first day of Econ 200 I assign a Sowell essay titled “Why Economists are Unpopular.”
Which of the David Horowitz books is your favorite? Mine is Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes.
I read “Domestic Enemies: The Founding Fathers’ Fight Against the Left” by Greenfield over the winter break. Have you read it?
Go on YouTube and view the recording of me as a main speaker at a Tea Party rally to see how wrong your assertions are.
Have you or Jeff ever pass an introductory Econ course?
You and Jeff should buy dunce caps now before Trump puts a tariff on them.
Now, has inflation continued or not. Jeff calls people “a liar” and then goes on to say prices are down. The irony!
Who nominated you to sniff Macron’s ass?
You have an ActBlue flag on your porch and Paul Krugman photo on your glory hole toilet stall door?
What’s your favorite George Will book? “Men at Work?” Snicker.
You’re a David Horowitz and Daniel Greenfield fan but you only started trolling this website when President Trump started imposing tariffs on America’s economic enemies and decreasing consumer prices? Paste the first sentences of page 100 in both men’s books, liar.
Have you ever “pass” an English course?
Inflation has ended and prices are down. You can write that shit smells yummy and it may be true to you but it isn’t true in the real world.
Oh Ritchie….you have no idea how juvenile you are. We have to lower ourselves to achieve that level of stupidity you manage to achieve every day.
It is you are triggered each and every day. It is you who have this bizarre compulsion to tell us how wonderful you are. And how above it all you are. No one gives a crap. It’s clear you need a psychiatrist. Wazza matter, Teach? Monmouth U. wouldn’t hire you. little man?
I guess all those economists who point out how tariffs raise prices are traitors. Thanks for that insight.
Now you’re catching on, Beavis.
My comment is:
The French can keep their wine and I’ll keep my money. Besides, the only thing I drink is water. Alcoholic beverages, fruit juices and sodas are verboten.
And no, it’s not a religious thing. It’s knowing and understanding human physiology and what the long term consequences are from consuming that stuff over many years. Accelerated aging and a shortened life span are the least of the consequences.
Well that is your choice. But if other Americans freely choose to consume alcohol, you really don’t have a say in it (I’m not assuming you do think you have a say). And it is certainly not the governments business.
I don’t disagree with you at all. We’re a free country and when it comes to what people voluntarily do to themselves, I’m about as libertarian as it gets. Want to do fentanyl? Knock yourself out. Want to shoot up heroin or smoke crack? Knock yourself out. Want to smoke and drink? Knock yourself out. Want to commit suicide? It’s none of my business.
It only becomes my business when someone’s self destructive behavior interferes with my life or imposes a financial burden on me. In that case, I should have the freedom and the right to kill you.
Freedom has responsibilities. Unlimited freedom has consequences.
I agree. This is the land of the free supposedly. We shouldn’t make crimes out of consensual acts.
That explains your alternative lifestyle and butt herpes.
Nobody is stopping you from pretending you drink French wine, and the Frogs will get some price relief on superior California wines. Bon apéritif, Monsieur Trou du Cul.
If it weren’t for Texas and Missouri root stock the French, and possibly German, wine industry would have died in the late 1800’s.
Daniel,
Can you write an article to inform some of your commenters on all the taxes, restrictions and fees that other governments already have in place on American goods. It’s been a one way street for far too long, and American businesses and workers have paid the price. It may take tariffs to bring them to the negotiating table to level the playing field and to have ‘real’ free trade.
Nobody cares.
Read the comments:
Not one of the anti-tariff commenters are aware of the double standards.
Probably have never worked in an international industry.
Americans are tired of subsidizing foreign competition –
and I’m personally tired of ignorant morons complaining when anyone suggests leveling the playing field.
I’d love to debate you in person. I’d mop the floor with your head!
I’m anti tariff. I think protectionism is idiotic.
Just what ‘double standard” are you talking about?
Double standard? Onerous tarrifs on America by foreign countries and their sniveling because President Trump evened things out, Brainiac. And lefty trolls mad about MAGA peace and prosperity.
How will Americans survive without French wine?
Well actually that’s each individual Americans decision to make, not Trumps!
You really disappoint me Mr Greenfield. I thought you believed in free markets.
I sure hope that regular working class Americans don’t like beer or Jack Daniels either, because guess what? Beer cans are made out of aluminum and the price increase is already happening. And what, you may wonder, could make strange bedfellows of Governor Andy Beshear, and Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul? Well that would be the fact that Kentucky bourbon companies are about to be collateral in the trade war when retaliatory tariffs wipe out their markets in Canada and the EU. Just don’t expect to hear many more country songs about enjoying a good ol’ bottle of Jack once those bottles reach top shelf prices. Your average good ol’ boy can drink rotgut instead, and everyone who gets laid off from those Kentucky/Tennessee distilleries can use their experience to bootleg moonshine again.
I’ll just quote the old Nixon-era bumper sticker to say: “Don’t blame me! I’m from Massachusetts,” and while I’m at it, I might as well specify that the anti-tariff Massachusetts Revolutionaries who tossed that tea into Boston Harbor were neither your cultural nor genetic ancestors, and they probably would’ve tossed you in too. You’re not part of my family.
You’re an idiot.
Prices on domestic beers are down.
Go shopping.
I sincerely think you are the idiot NANC! Protectionists are all idiots!
And yet prices are down and going further down. Who’s stupid?
And steel and aluminum prices haven’t increased. I don’t drink it but I do shop and Jack Daniels prices haven’t increased and vodka is still $10 or $11 for a 1.5 liter bottle.
Even here in San Jose California, beer prices have gone down but these South Bay Californians prefer IPAs and ESBs. They have the worst taste in beer in the country and the beer available in supermarkets proves it. Bitter guys like Pope Dope probably like that swill.
No drinking during Lent for me, but otherwise it’s Narraganset, Miller and bourbon. I’d recommend the IPAs for you though Jeff, because you fill up before you can get drunk and I know from your criminal record that you’ve struggled with the DUIs.
You know you suck ass on Lent and drink ballsack sweat every day.
Trump Tariffs are a win for America and you D-Bags are the losers.
The EU doesn’t believe in free trade, they are engaging in Mercantilism. Tariffs are the normal remedy for Mercantilism.
Yes, they’ve worked in the past and they work for President Trump. Only lefties in America oppose their use against foreign powers.
Educate us. During the Great Depression, did the U.S. run trade deficits or trade surpluses?
Smoot and Hawley say “hello.”
The Great Depression? The glory days of bankers and stock market speculators.
DERP.
Thanks Jeff !!! The EU leftists have very cleverly installed numerous Mercantilist policies into their economies over the last 50 years or so.
Mercantilism dominated Western European policy during the Age of Sail (16th to 18th centuries), quite an interesting period.
Check the price of gas in Germany, for example 🙂
As of March 20, 2025, the price of gasoline in Germany is around $7.15 per gallon.
The price of gasoline in Germany (and Japan) is high because the tax on it is so high. The price of gasoline in Illinois is higher…wait for it because this is deep…because the tax is higher. A tax is a cost. A tariff is a tax. Those tariffs are intended to drive prices of imports up.
Tariffs are intended to protect a country’s key exports and in President trump’s case, to stop foreign countries from ripping America off the way you love.
Gas taxes in California went up to 65 cents a gallon today or within a few days and the mean national average 32.26 cents.
Germany’s gas prices have nothing to do with tariffs.
You’re a moron, Tampon Tim.
Yes, our Founding Fathers weren’t too fond of mercantilism. Boy, did the Brits rip the Colonists off on lumber prices in the Age of Sail, if I remember correctly. From the 17th century until 1783, anyway. They seemed to rip everybody off with mercantilism, including their own countrymen. And then there were the Spaniards, French…….
When the Europeans engage in mercantilism, they tax their own citizens and harm themselves. For Americans to respond to that with tariffs would be hurting ourselves.
So your saying let our government tax us more to respond to Europes mercantilism? Because tariffs are just another tax on Americans.
Absolutely! You are correct!
The decrease in prices says otherwise.
How many times do you have to get whipped before you stop with your disproved lies, masochist boy?
The U.S. subsidizes farmers. The highest=paid professor where I work owns much more than 1,000 acres of land. As a supporter of free markets, he was excoriated by other farmers for writing an essay published in some popular farming journal in which he criticized those subsidies. His annual subsidy was more than 100K.
The subsidies are now published as public information. What’s the chance Trump will end those subsidies? Probably about the same as the probability that check from Mexico will finally come in to pay for the wall.
My friend, let me remind you that subsidies are easy to accept when it’s other people’s money that’s being given away.
No one complains when they’re being given free money. They only complain when it’s their money (and resources) that’s being taken and given away to illegals aliens, foreign countries who hate us, lazy welfare good for nothings, government bureaucrats and greedy & corrupt politicians and their friends.
Five quotes from the late George Mason University economics professor Dr. Walter E. Williams that offers some insightful perspectives:
“No matter how worthy the cause, it is robbery, theft, and injustice to confiscate the property of one person and give it to another to whom it does not belong.”
“The act of reaching into one’s own pockets to help a fellow man in need is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else’s pocket is despicable.”
“If one person has a right to something he did not earn, of necessity it requires that another person not have a right to something that he did earn.”
“My definition of social justice: I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree? How much of what I earn belongs to you–and why?”
“What our nation needs is a separation of “business and state”…That would mean crony capitalism and crony socialism could not survive.”
I was a big fan of Walter Williams and it was a loss for the conservative movement to lose him.
So was I. At least Dr. Sowell is still alive. I think it was him or Dr. Williams who said the real minimum wage is zero. I have yet to hear a rational logical argument disputing that simple fact. A fact that every unemployed and homeless person on the planet can attest to.
To argue a contrarian view is mere sophistry based on tenuous facts that have no basis in reality. Typically it’s the bailiwick of an over-educated self righteous pompous (liberal) jackass. For example, the on air “talent” at CNN and MSNBC.
Is that all you got? You are actually dumb enough to think that Mexico will write a check. Mexico has paid several times over for that wall. You are about the millionth derpo that used that lame excuse on this comment board.
Try harder sh*t for brains.
Of course Mexico wasn’t going to pay for the wall. It’s just another example of a dumb statement by Trump that his staunchest supporters applauded, “Mexico has paid several times over for that wall?” Can you show us a picture of it?
There’s a good essay in the Wall Street Journal titled “Trump’s Opponents Cheer On His Tariff Blunders.”
The same Trump who took credit when the stock market went up is now ignoring the big drop or claiming it’s temporary. (Hmmm, remember when the Fed told us that inflation was “transitory?”
As for dumb statements on the comment board, I laughed when I saw the statement that prices are down. They’re down for the stock market. Well done, Donno!
Do you think he $250K that Trump ended up paying to Stormy Daniels was some expensive sex?
The stock market is up. DERP. Not that Americans care more about stock prices than their standard of living, which is also going up.
We win, you lose.
Thank Slick Willy Clinton for NAFTA and the export of U.S. jobs.
I guess for wine and Cheese, I will have do with Thunderbird (Aged in particle board barrels for a week) and Cheezwiz in the tube.
DOGE keep going. The DemoRats are squealing.
Big D:
After reading some of the comments, one can conclude from some of the commenters that for the sake of no tariffs, they see nothing wrong with American jobs being shipped out of the country nor do they have a problem with unfair trade. They’re arguments appear to justify America getting schlonged and shat on by the EU oligarchs.
Oh, and uh… The demo-RATS may be squealing but that’s not enough. I want to hear them scream! That way I know that justice with a side of comeuppance is being served!!
If the economy was so bad under Clinton, why did he get re-elected? “It’s the economy, stupid” turned out to be a winning slogan when he won the first time. It was none other than VP Al Gore, debating Ross Perot, who pulled out a picture of Smoot and Hawley during the debate. Debate over!
The U.S. had a trade surplus during the Great Depression.
No one cares about Roosevelt and his great depression economy. The only reason he is considered great is because of the war. The war revived the economy.
On May 6, 1939, Henry Morgenthau, Roosevelt’s treasury secretary, confirmed the total failure of the New Deal to stop the Great Depression: “We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. . . . I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. . . . And an enormous debt to boot!”
The Clinton economy was going gang busters under the illusion of the internet superhighway. Ironically it crashed just before Clinton left office because it was built on nothing except ones and zeroes. Then came 9-11, the recession and then the housing bubble driven by Barney Frank and his bad loan scheme and the death Freddie Mac and Fannie May.
Then along came our Gay Muslim president Obama and 8 years of Carter style malaise. I would drive along Ventura BLVD and all I saw was closed businesses. It still hasn’t recovered.
So glad I got out of liberal hell hole CA 10 years ago. I live in a red state now. Demo Craps seem to like debt and high taxes. Trump is back because of Biden and Kemala
So save your stupid questions for your idiot friends at college.
So I’m a progressive? Talk about it being necessary to recalibrate the Stupidometer. I start my mornings reading Frontpagemag, American Thinker, City Journal, National Review, The College Fix, and the Wall Street Journal. View my speech on Youtube at a Tea Party rally to see just how absolutely clueless you are.
National Review would be the magazine of which Trump said “it’s a dying publication.” I suspect you and Trump went to the same school for debate lessons. Trump’s pathetic response was “it’s the Republican Party not the Conservative Party.
Stormy Daniels says “hello.”
You are against tariffs. That means you are for less taxes and smaller government. Of course that makes you a progressive! SMH!
Only protectionist idiots can draw such conclusions!
No one cares what you read all morning, egghead.
Why did Brokeback Hasbeen Osama get reelected? And Dick Nixon, for that matter, who stagnated men’s wages from 1972 till today, and who’s rapprochement with China has destabilized the entire world? Why did FDR get elected four times when the Great Depression lasted for seven years under his tenure?
America had a trade surplus during the Great Depression because they couldn’t afford foreign goods and domestic ones were cheap, YOU IMBECILE! The exact opposite of what you lefties want!
Well, President Trump speaks and acts for America. You scumbags don’t matter and America hates you.
And oh, yeah. American exports were relatively cheap compared to European imports during the Great Depression because the Euros WEREN’T CHARGING HUGE TARRIFFS ON AMERICAN GOODS THE WAY THEY DO NOW, YOU CRETIN!!!!!
Trump Über Alles. You lefties have to pin your hopes on Alexandria Ocrazio Cretin and the Squat in 2028 while we’ll have J.D. Vance. Get used to losing while we enjoy winning.
So Richie, how will you use that in the future. And how’s life in the grade B world of small irrelevant colleges.
Hey Intrepid,
This is too easy for me. My life as a college professor remains awesome. It’s so rewarding after 35 years that I could easily retire, but choose not to. No, it’s not an Ivy League college.
What college did you teach at? Fail out of?
Now to refute your predictably shallow comments. I read the books “New Deal or Raw Deal? How FDR’s Economic Legacy Has Damaged America” (Burton Folsom, Jr.), Illiberal Reformers: Race, Eugenics & American Economics in the Progressive Era (Thomas C. Leonard) and “The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression (Amity Shlaes.)
Enjoy my Tea Party rally speech on YouTube. One of my conservative students organized that Tea Party at the college and asked me to be the main speaker. You’ll learn just how clueless your assertions are.
I’m going to continue to respond to your weak statements. Bring it on!
Nobody wants to see your Tea Bagger party.
And “Raw Deal? I thought you loved America suffering under the Great Depression? We had a trade surplus! Life was awesome! America only had a trade surplus because the Euros didn’t charge huge tariffs on American merchandise like they do now and America had a manufacturing base like the one Trump is rebuilding with tariffs. But hey, the Great Depression was great! It made life great! The country had ten years of paradise thanks to bankers and the stock market!
You can wish Alzheimer Joe or Heels Up Harris were here to Make America Suck Again but we have President Trump, not a second Great Depression.
Yes, I read New Deal or Raw Deal. Very relevant. I read White Liberals. Beyond Boring.
It seems all you have are sniffy comments in the form of gotcha questions, because you think you are smarter than everyone. No one cares if you spoke at a tea party rally organized by one of your “conservative” students. No one cares about the books you read. No one cares about your stupid gotcha questions. No one cares if you teach introductory Econ at your silly little college. Your opinions always seem to be someone elses.
I’m supposed to be impressed by your little accomplishments? As for me graduating from a university, I have a masters degree from The George Washington University. My focus was Renaissance Hymn in Europe from 1450-1600. I taught for 10 years before becoming a programmer. Always played out professionally as well I ran my own computer company for 20 years. Big bucks. How about you Mr. smarty pants
Must not be a lot going on in your pathetic life because it seems you have a lot of time to write your “Bitter Table for One” and your “How Great I Am” bio comments.
You can’t imagine what a predictable boring overeducated stereotype you are. As for Trump, he is President again. Mainly because the idiots you voted for completely fucked up my country. Sucks to be you.
Biden and Kammy. What a pair. And little Barack. Gay and Muslim. And of course the Clintons, or as we say, President Blowjob in the Oval. The two grifters who basically were involved in a scandal a day. And we can’t forget Ben Ghazi, can we.
So when does the next semester begin, teaching the same crap over and over again.
Can’t say it enough…..sucks to be you, Teach.
Everything is easy for you when you don’t have much to say and you rely smug, cheap little insults that the average middle school student could come up with. You have a “nyahh nyahh nyahh” quality all your own.
Please do respond. I need a diversion from Neanderthals like you.
I love how you start a lot of your insipid comments with ‘Educate us’, as if to demonstrate how effete you are. But “trigger warnings, puppies and kittens” was the best
Nobody uses ‘triggered’ any more, Teach. Obama isn’t President anymore
I educate you every time I respond to your dumbass faux intellectual snobbery. It’s not that hard. I just read what you burp out. It’s like living in a vapid time machine.
You really need to update your lame material. But what can one expect from dealing with a progressive dinosaur who wore out his welcome on that small time campus.
You know, little Ritichie, I never heard of that educational powerhouse that is Monmouth College until you came along to “save us” from ourselves.
I still don’t know what you are trying to accomplish here except for your problems with tariffs and Trump. Yeah you are a conservative for sure…………………….NOT!
He’s screeching in impotent rage because President Trump is going after Hamas jihadi terrorists in universities and colleges, and alternately whimpering in terror because the DOE and college funding are finally under well deserved and well earned attack.
I say we go after litlle Ritchie, the overstuffed windbag professor whenever possible. His shitck will get old very quickly, especially as Trump becomes more successful with each passing week.
Monmouth U. ain’t a 2nd or third tier institution, it’s a high school extension institution for 3rd rate professors who couldn’t get a job at a real school.
Oh yeah, it isn’t Monmouth U. He let the cat out of the bag by saying “Here in Illinois.” It’s Monmouth College
Incredible number of folks here are anti-tariff
… because of what?!
When was the last time you examined the tariff structure of USA? Or any other import/export limitation, which is also a form of interference in trade.
For the last 60+ years, America’s foreign trade policy has been
PROTECTIONISM!
For foreigners!
Americans affected by these lop-sided policies are as pissed off as
the rest of us are upset by criminal invaders, criminals on our streets, terrible education, endless regulations, and taxation up our yins and down our yangs.
None of you whiners give a crap about your neighbors –
– and you have NO PROOF –
that ANY of your assertions are true.
Because we have not had any pro-American trade policy since before most of us were born.
I have NO DOUBT – that using tariffs will have unintended consequences and some of those will be negative.
SO WHAT?!
Are you stupid? Are you an idiot?
You have lived your whole life – or certainly many decades – under the rule of F. Americans
… it’s about time that we do different things.
Arrest criminals. Deport illegals. Cut spending. Fire anti-American communists on the government’s payroll. End DEI – and systemic racism in America.
And why not try tariffs?
BTW – the best argument against the tariffs – is that they don’t work that well for most of our trade partners. Almost all our partners tariff the hell out of us – and it doesn’t help them very much.
OTOH – the best argument for tariffs – is that it doesn’t matter.
China, Canada, and Mexico are the only trade partners significant enough — to influence trade. Ex-oil, which is its own bag of worms.
Amen!!!!! Screw the EU socialist oligarchs (wealth & privilege for the ruling elites, socialism for everyone else), screw Canada & Mexico who screw us every day in every which way but loose, and screw those Chicom bastards who’s idea of free trade is dumping their slave labor products in our country while erecting insurmountable barriers to American made products in their country.
It’s unbelievable to me that some Americans think that that is somehow “fair” or we’re suppose to just accept it as the status quo and pretend it’s not a problem. Bullsh*t!!
People like that are the primary reason things as so screwed up in America today as it is. How? They vote for politicians who invite the world to screw us over and play dumb like they don’t know what that does to small businesses, farmers and the working class.
In today’s Wall Street Journal, which one commenter laughably described as a leftist rag, there is an essay titled “Trump’s Tariffs Are No ‘Fun’ on My Farm.” Those who have absurdly claimed tariffs don’t cause prices to increase should read it.
Maybe, just maybe, people who criticize something President Trump does aren’t “traitors” or “progressives” but instead conservatives who disagree with a specific Trump policy. Admittedly, recognizing that possibility does require some reasonable level of intelligence.
Does it look like I’m being intrepidly or instant backing down?
Oooo the WSJ….again. Gee teach, I’ll get right on that right after my nap.
Personally, I like the Trump Tariff wars. I’m making $$$s in the commodities market and in metals. The market is a little flat today. How you doin’? Are you grading papers today?
I think try out that email you posted last month, just to piss you off.
