The objection to land mines never made much sense to me. They’re obviously a horrific weapon and when civilians stumble into them, even more so, but the campaign to dismantle land mines was based on the delusional notion that the age of war had ended, and land mines could be regulated to history.
Wars haven’t ended and land mines are useful again.
Finland has announced it’s leaving the Ottawa Land Mine treaty..Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are also stepping out and preparing to mine borders shared with Russia or its allies like Belarus. Considering that Russia’s current favorite tactic for invading Poland has been flying Iraqi Muslims into Belarus and guiding them across the border into Poland, land mines are bound to add an interesting twist.
Poland is currently prepping 1 million landmines. A bunch of NATO countries ‘mining up’ essentially marks the end of the land mine ban. And while the circumstances leading to that, a newly aggressive Russia, aren’t happy ones, despite what Princess Di may have claimed, land mines are not a bad thing.
Land mines are primarily a defensive weapon. Having land mines on your border makes an invasion less likely. The campaign to ban land mines was nonsensical 90s nonsense. Finland, Poland, and other nations are living in the real world by getting ready to use land mines again. The land mine campaigners aren’t.
Yes, what land mines can do is ugly. The same is true of every weapon. There’s no pretty way to kill someone.
“All countries have the right to protect themselves,” International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) Director Tamar Gabelnick complained. “But to do so by knowingly reaching for a weapon with such proven catastrophic impact on civilians is irresponsible and incomprehensible. Instead of making their population safer, Latvia, and potentially the other 3 countries who are also considering the same move, are seeking to litter their lands with hidden bombs that risk causing devastating, life-threatening injuries to their own people for decades.”
As opposed to what? Tank shells? Artillery? If managed correctly, land mines can be tracked and if no longer needed, dealt with. Does Tamar prefer the alternative of five years of bloody warfare?
I say do the same on our border.
Not sure about other countries, but the U.S. makes landmines that are designed to self-destruct or deactivate within a certain time period. I would say the critters that roam the borderlands are most at risk.
Yes, land mine technology has advanced quite a bit.
Progressives do not acknowledge the reality and ugliness of war, yet their policies bring war upon us.
Today I read Proverbs 20: 18 “Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.” Biblehub has recently made its very good, literal translation available on its website. Unfortunately, their commentary is shot through with progressive stupidity:
“In ancient times, warfare was a common reality, and the success of military endeavors often depended on strategic planning and wise leadership.” It goes on weakly to suggest the passage pertains to our private spiritual battles.
Compare the older Pulpit Commentary: “War is a necessary evil, but it must be undertaken prudently and with a due consideration of circumstances….”
Progressives believe, despite all evidence to the contrary, that humanity has achieved an end to the ugliness of war.
Ah, Princess Diana, aka Dim Di Spencer according to a friend at uni who had grown up with that set.
When it was announced that she was going to become the Princess of Wales he fell out of his armchair laughing and described her as “dumb as two boxes of rocks end to end”.
She had a sweet heart but she was really, really dumb.
Land mines are mainly intended to slow down an invasion force. The invaders then have to clear a path through the minefields.
Yep, slow them down and channel them into killzones.
“International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) Director Tamar Gabelnick complained. “ And what exactly is your solution, Tamar, to the obvious threat to these countries that Putin represents? Any idiot can complain, but a true leader creates workable solutions to the problems that are identified.
“There’s no pretty way to kill someone.”
Waddya mean? I have a bunch of ammo and all of it has been scented with rose perfume and patchouli. Nothing like a sweetly stinkin’ Muslim corpse.
Oh, am I being Islamophobic?
America had good reason to refuse the Landmine Treaty and we have good reasons to tell t he whole UN to Go Away and evict them from America and revoke all their Ownership of places in America
