The Trump administration is weighing strong military action against Mexican cartels and meeting pushback from the Mexican government.
After this article was originally published, Sheinbaum addressed it and the question of U.S. drone strikes at a news conference.
“We reject any form of intervention or interference. That’s been very clear, Mexico coordinates and collaborates, but does not subordinate itself. There is no interference, nor will there be,” she said, according to a translation provided by the Mexican Embassy to the United States.
“While this idea hasn’t been formally proposed, we’ve made it clear that it wouldn’t address the root of the issue. What truly works is ongoing attention to root causes, arrests driven by intelligence and investigation, coordination, and zero tolerance for impunity. We categorically reject any such actions, and we don’t believe they will happen. There is a strong, ongoing dialogue on security and many other matters.”
What are those root causes?
Mexico is a failed state.
Some people like drugs.
How are we supposed to address those? I know Sheinbaum’s response is to give everyone more money.
Mexico is too corrupt and unstable to bring the cartels under control. It wants to pretend it’s a functional state but its military has to get into heavy gun battles with the cartels that it sometimes loses.
Mexico in the past has been all too happy to solicit American military help for dealing with its various internal struggles. But this one very directly affects Americans.
An interesting problem in the theory and history of War. Perhaps somewhat similar to the situation with Pancho Villa, where the government isn’t in control of certain areas which are controlled by guerrillas.
I’d argue it’s different now. Poncho Villa was tracked by horse mostly. We now have drones and satellites.
I had a girlfriend once whose grandmother met Pancho Villa. She liked it that I spoke to her granny about it in broken Spanish. Chicks like me, especially the old ones. Too bad Pancho never met Black Jack Pershing. Now there was a cool guy. I’m sure you’ve read about how he treated the Moros. That guy didn’t fuck around.
I liked the story about how Pancho’s wife treated women who tried to steal him from her. It’s really a great period to read about.
I’ll have to read that shit. I haven’t so far.
There’s so much literature out there. There never seems to be enough time. Eh. I’ll have to be that Burgess Meredith character in that “Twighlight Zone” episode were he became the world’s last librarian after a nuclear Holocaust.
Broke his glasses, though. That was fucked up.
Pancho Villa and Zapata. Some crazy dudes 🙂
Well, If I remember my history correctly, Black Jack Pershing, along with a young George S. Patton, tried their hardest to meet Pancho Villa and permanently put an end to his cross border raids. The results were not as successful as they had hoped. If it comes to it, and I hope it doesn’t, may our military accomplish far more against the narcoterrorists whose capacity for murder and destruction make Villa look like a diplomat.
Yes, Villa was good at hiding.
Exactly. In olden days guerrillas could hide almost indefinitely in the mountains.
Yes, like those Apaches. They could live off cacti and lizards and still kill you in the middle of the night while you were trying to catch some sleep. Scary guys, actually. I would hate to meet them under the wrong circumstances, meaning me without a gun in broad daylight.
Back when I lived in the high desert I used to run into Indians in the middle of nowhere. I’d be lying in the back of my Scout in my underwear drinking a beer and soaking in the sun and those guys would just drive up out of nowhere. They liked me, though. Lucky for me because when you’re out in the middle of nowhere situations can turn into a full on “Deliverance” movie before you can say boo. People behave differently when they’re away from civilization. You can’t trust them, especially the white ones. Thankfully, the Indians don’t seem to be into the whole butt rape thing.
We are addressing the root causes…….by planning on bombing the peace into them. When done there will be no more roots. That’s the best way to nip it in the bud.
That’s well said – short, and to the point. Grease ’em and be done with it.
Yeah, grease the greasers.
The root causes include Americans consumption of drugs
And drug use increases when jobs such as manufacturing and related businesses decrease and hope for a good successful life and family life is lost. Economy (al all root causes of bad economy – illegal alien invasion, foreign manufacturing, pandemics, etc etc) causes loss of the American dream.
Root of roots of roots.
Drugs alcohol etc is an escape from a hopeless life.
When Mexico’s president condemns the cartels on one side of her mouth but denies Ameeica’s help in eliminating them, it means four little words: “She’s in on it.”
Yep – Mexico’s just one more little 3rd-world country with a government that’s as corrupt as the day is long. The word for it is “mordida” – bribe. You geev me some monies, senor, and you get what you want – see? Easy-peasy.
I don’t like the idea of drone strikes. I would rather focus on dismantling the cartels financially, of which the tariffs are going to play a big part in disrupting the Canada-China-Mexico fentanyl trade.
I’m in favor of drone strikes and bombing and strafing. Pound sand, Mexico. IF you cant fix it, get out of the way. We can!
Tell the Mexican President to GO POUND SAND And drop its stupid Lawsuit aaginst Gun Makers its time for the Government of Mexico to take up some responsibility for their own Crinimal Behavior
The root cause is Mexico needs to be bombed unceasingly.
Mexico is the cartel.
Trump IS “addressing the root cause.” The root cause of crime is CRIMINALS. Eradicating these BRUTAL cartels is addressing the root cause of the cartel violence and victimization spilling into the USA. It’s very telling that Mexico can’t (or won’t) stop the cartels on it’s own, and is even trying to protect them from Trump.
Kamala went searching for the root causes of illegal immigration as Border Czar. Complete failure. President Nayib Bukele didn’t search for the root causes of MS-13. He just took care of the problem and El Salvador no longer has that problem.
When the Democrats try and treat the root causes, it never seems to help. Only makes things worse.
Americans will have opiate addictions regardless what Mexico does or does not do.
If American addicts were all enrolled in Long-Term Mandated/Monitored Addiction Treatment Programs, then demand for fentanyl, e.g., would virtually disappear.
I’d think the current President of Mexico might want to go easy on the “root causes” thought as that would put a bullseye on her residence.
If not for the complete failure and corruption of the Mexican government, past and present, this might not be the problem that it is.
The US CIA has lots of experience to be able to attack cartel members in the most vicious way and blame it on opposing cartels. It’s not like the Mexican government can monitor or do more than cursory investigations. Make the cartel members as cautious about going out as a Ukrainian soldier at the battle front. “If you’ve got them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.”
― Theodore Roosevelt
The root cause is the fact that the drug cartels control the country of Mexico, not the weak and feckless Mexican government. The cartels are the tail that wags the dog.
Most of the police in Mexico are on the drug cartels payroll. Refusing to take the drug cartels money is not an option. Saying no means they and their entire family will be “un-alived” as a lesson to anyone else who refuses to work for the cartels. It’s a minor detail about what goes on in Mexico that people who haven’t lived near the Mexican border all of their lives are likely not aware of.
Moreover, the American MSM is biased and corrupt and lacks objectivity in the true sense of the word. They cannot be trusted nor expected to tell the unvarnished truth. Their ongoing crusade against Trump and friends and associates establishes that as a fact. They will never state the truth about Mexico.
You addict people with your product then you blame those you addicted and killed. Sounds like the police blaming a woman for being raped so they can keep the rapist on the streets. like they do in merry ol’ England.
If we intervene to kill terrorists that you want do, what are you going to do about it> We can wipe out your country with a tariff.
So Mexican Pres, like US dimocrat leaders, are funded by cartels.
Got it.
