“Perhaps my most profound and certainly most disturbing conclusion was that revolutionaries were by nature—and of necessity—criminals, who would routinely lie and break laws to achieve their ends,” David Horowitz wrote in The Radical Mind.
It’s a compelling insight that is all the more timely as leftists are celebrating Luigi Mangione’s assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, wearing costumes to look like him and getting tattoos of the killer. A frustrated radical movement reeling from its election defeats is turning more openly to terrorism. Professors have praised the murder on social media and a defense fund for the assassin has already raised six figures.
Some liberals profess to be baffled by the public embrace of a murderer, but as Horowitz insightfully demonstrated, crime and murder are already coded into the DNA of the Left.
Radical political figures like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Michael Moore pretend to decry the violence even as they then justify it and make use of it to issue their own terrorist threats.
Sen. Warren dangerously suggested that the murder “should be a warning to everyone in the health care system.” An ordinary woman who told an insurance company on the phone “you people are next” was accused of an act of terrorism and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
But Warren faces no accountability for her criminal radical threats.
That is why Horowitz’s ‘The Radical Mind: The Destructive Plans of the Woke Left’ is urgently relevant for this critical moment as the Left once again begins its descent into radical violence.
“Progressivism is ultimately a criminal mentality,” he wrote in. “Progressives regard criminal lawlessness and mayhem as understandable responses to what they perceive as ‘social injustice.’”
The catastrophic damage caused by the Black Lives Matter radical riots was justified by manufacturing a crisis of police brutality that the riots were said to be reacting against, similarly the pro-Hamas riots of the last year used a manufactured claim of genocide to justify their malicious destructiveness, but the underlying appeal that made leftists embrace BLM and Hamas was the appeal of the destruction and the promise that it would usher in a new order.
“The left’s goal is a fundamental transformation of American society,” Horowitz wrote and that, “requires a dismantling of the existing social order. To justify this destruction, the left creates narratives that provide it with ways to condemn and delegitimize the present and its defenders, and to justify its criminal agendas.”
The manufactured crisis becomes an impetus for violence with the aim of social transformation.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren threatened that while, “violence is never the answer, but people can be pushed only so far” and warned that “this is a warning that if you push people hard enough, they lose faith in the ability of their government to make change, lose faith in the ability of the people who are providing the health care to make change, and start to take matters into their own hands in ways that will ultimately be a threat to everyone.”
The senator was warning health care companies and the country that unless they made a deal with her, they would face domestic terrorism, positioning herself as the alternative to Luigi Mangione with the ability to restrain or unleash a campaign of leftist terrorism.
But as Horowitz wrote in The Radical Mind, “the criminal nature of the progressive outlook should be obvious to anyone who takes the time to look at its domestic legislative agenda. Virtually every progressive proposal, from the moratorium on rent payments to cancelling student debts to handing out other people’s money to their favored constituents for doing nothing is an eloquent expression of the fact that socialism is theft.”
The gap between Sen. Warren and Luigi Mangione is smaller than many might think. And David Horowitz continues to urge conservatives to speak out and call the Left what it truly is.
“Unfortunately, Republicans, and conservatives generally, are too polite to embarrass their political opponents by pointing out the criminal nature of their agendas and their modus operandi,” he wrote. That exposure of the criminal nature of the radical mind has been a key part of Horowitz’s work over the years and is best expressed in The Radical Mind.
The radical mind is inherently criminal. In The Radical Mind, Horowitz describes how, “The Communist historian Eric Hobsbawm, wrote a book, widely praised on the left, called Primitive Rebels. It was about criminal gangs in nineteenth century Sicily whom he saw as Marxists avant la lettre. In other words, their criminality would have been seen as social justice if they had advanced their malignant agendas in the language of progressives like himself.”
It becomes easy then to understand how criminals like George Floyd become radical martyrs and how the criminality of terrorists like Luigi Mangione captures the imagination of the Left.
The killing of Brian Thompson is seductive to the radical mind because it is an act of violence and because violence is the most direct way of achieving the leftist goal of total social transformation. The only reason the American Left avoids violence is because it expects to win anyway, but when an event, such as the 1968, 2016 or 2024 elections, shake its faith in progress through political victories, it begins to directly seek political change through violence.
Fueled by historical inevitability, it becomes convinced that it must do anything that it can to bring on the new age by any means. The more the Left loses, the more convinced it becomes that it lives under an oppressive system that must be overthrown whatever the human cost.
“Every political philosophy that regards itself as revolutionary, or transformative—describes itself as socialist, communist, fascist or jihadist—and believes that ‘the moral arc of the universe bends towards justice’,” Horowitz wrote in The Radical Mind: “The belief that the world is marching towards justice, and that to be a progressive means one is “on the right side of history” is a delusion that will justify any and every atrocity, and already has.”
The murder of Brian Thompson is only the latest atrocity of many to be embraced by the Left.

I’d like to comment about “’The left’s goal is a fundamental transformation of American society,’ Horowitz wrote.'” I would make one change in that orientation. The Left is motivated by hatred and envy, not correcting moral faults in the world. They rationalize their hatred, but in reality they just hate and therefore want to destroy. They are evil trying to dress themselves up in a cloak of good so that they can justify to themselves and the world the evil that they do or support.
One more comment: Anytime an adjective is placed in front of “justice” you can be sure it isn’t.
Just as anytime you hear the phrase “people’s republic,” you know that it is neither.
At a deeper level, they fear what they cannot comprehend. This is the source of their hatred and actions to destroy any who with beliefs in “The Golden Rule”. These are individuals with their human decoder turned off. They miss entirely the deeper communications that act as a glue to society by which most of us see others as having basic rights even if we disagree. Calling our communication a “Dog Whistle” self-identifies them. Where we disagree to the point of taking action is when they are violent or thieving. Their condition is called sociopathy. It has a spectrum of severity like any other personality flaw but this is likely genetic. There are some with inherited wealth who acquire the lack of understanding humanity as they seek to preserve their wealth from decline. This is still fear based behavior with fear of being exposed and socially isolated the basic element.

Because by using merit as a major qualifying factor the % of black students who could pass muster declined – esp once race based affirmative action was eliminated. Why are so many people so determined to ignore the proven evidence – that capability is not issued universally – to put themselves on the moral high ground of Alfred E Newman’ famous line from Mad mag: ‘ What me worry? We can all achieve the same things’. Not. To me, our civ is based on merit and by diluting that factor we risk sliding into a decline – and it’s already happening in so many managerial positions where brilliance is not required and mediocrity is not revealed as readily when pushing paper from one end of the desk to the other. Try any P.O. or any federal office and either you’ll believe your eyes or what the brainwashing tells you. It’s a terrible but important inconvenient truth. Radicalism – in whatever form – is the inevitable escalation of our common way of talking, in which speakers don’t listen to themselves while they speak. Our Disembodied language (DL) has been going on forever, but remains unaddressed to this very day, because it totally debunks ALL beliefs. I am the only one who is actually talking about the difference between DL and Embodied Language (EL). In EL we listen to ourselves while speak. You can call it criminal, mentally ill or Left wing extremism, but non of this gets to the real issue, which is: talking and listening.

Reading David Horowitz’s books was a real eye-opener for me to the depth and breadth of the perverse leftist mindset.
Along this line, with particular insight into Black people’s experience with/under the Democrats, Vince Everett Ellison has written an extraordinary expose in his 2023 book, “Crime Inc.: How Democrats Employ Mafia and Gangster Tactics to Gain and Hold Power.” It is one incisive statement after another revealing the principles and methods of the Democratic party/Leftists through history and its affiliation with Marxist destruction of America and her people. A fascinating, instructive read!
At its core, the left is at war with Christendom. Their goal is to replace Christianity with a new religion which denies any higher power or authority (other than man’s self image/humanism). This is Marxism/communism reflected in Putin’s comment that his underlying belief system is “history”.

I wish, however, that all these writers would drop the word Progressive unless it is followed in parentheses, e.g., Progressive (Democrat, Marxist, Fascist, or Globalist—all totalitarians) . The words Progressive and Progressives are harmless sounding and appealing, although they have always been euphemisms for the types of totalitarianism enclosed in parentheses above.
For the criminally minded “radicals” violence is the name of the game. William Godwin once called the new pack of radicals(including his wife)emerging after the Enlightenment “very good haters.”
