If you learned about the Alien and Sedition Acts in school, you probably took in the liberal position that they were an unconstitutional abuse of authority by an administration that was abusing its power.
The reality, as I discuss in my book, ‘Domestic Enemies: The Founding Fathers’ Fight Against The Left’, they were a response to persistent efforts by France to hijack American politics by using radical activists, fake news and riots, conspiracies involving members of Congress. French agents went on to create a network of ‘Democratic Societies’ to act as their agents which ultimately blended into the Democratic-Republican Party.
In short, the Alien and Sedition Acts were directed against a very real threat still operating today.
There’s only so much left of the Alien and Sedition Acts, but a key part of it, An Act Respecting Alien Enemies, is still very much in play, and the Trump administration shortly intends to deploy it against foreign gangs.
That means it’s time for the media to start (or continue) bellowing about Japanese internment camps, threats to democracy, and all that sort of rubbish. But Trump is using the Alien Enemies Act in an interesting way.
The Adams administration was dealing with new radical arrivals who were not citizens but trying to undermine the country. That is traditionally the way the Act has been used against enemy nationals here during wartime.
Specifically, “that whenever there shall be a declared war between the United States and any foreign nation or government, or any invasion or predatory incursion shall be perpetrated, attempted, or threatened against the territory of the United States, by any foreign nation or government, and the President of the United States shall make public proclamation of the event, all natives, citizens, denizens, or subjects of the hostile nation or government, being males of the age of fourteen years and upwards, who shall be within the United States, and not actually naturalized, shall be liable to be apprehended, restrained, secured and removed, as alien enemies.”
If Trump were using this to deport Chinese nationals, for example, during a conflict, that would be relatively straightforward. Removing Venezuelan gang members is a bit more complicated, but Venezuela is a narco-socialist state and its leadership were officially listed as a drug cartel smuggling drugs into America.
The FBI previously listed Maduro as a wanted criminal in the Cartel de los Soles which compromises the entire Venezuelan government. Actively engaging in operations to move drugs into the United States should count as an invasion or predatory incursion.
And this is where things get interesting.
The FBI is ramping up investigations of a cartel with reported ties to Venezuela’s hard-left regime — along with anyone deemed to have “dirty business” involving the South American country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, The Post has learned.
The bureau’s primary target is the so-called Cartel de Los Soles (“Cartel of the Suns”), whose leadership allegedly includes members of the Venezuelan military. Businessmen, financiers, and other cartels will face the possibility of US justice, said a source familiar with bureau discussions.
The cartel is not currently labeled a foreign terrorist organization, but the State Department last month slapped eight Latin American-based crime rings operating in the US with that label, including Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua.
A second source stated the FBI’s goal is to cripple the “entire financial system and organization” of those groups.
It’s easy enough to see how this will play out in the courts.
Not sure Donald gets it. xhiden (actually malibu) flooded the US with 20 million invaders so his communist wet dream would come true, the destruction of the US.
If Trump doesn’t get rid of all these invaders, not just the criminals it’s just a matter of time before the dims make the US like Cal.
Adams was one of my least favorite founding fathers. The Alien and Sedition act was a big reason. There was so much over reach and censorship and persecutions of political enemies. People look at McCarthy as a shameful period of political persecution in our history, but it pales in comparison to Wilson and Adams. And anyway McCarthy was right, but went too far. Adams had a vindictive streak and aristocratic holier than thou attitude and jailed his enemies without conscience. It is nice to know that there was a practical reason that gave rise to the excesses.
The French did try to interfere in American politics in the early years. Not sure if this was a continuation of the Genet incident or their attitude towards America, but Washington thought it was certain he would be lynched by his own countrymen, because Genet was such a considerable talent as demagogue. Remarkable that Genet took refuge in our country to save his own skin. No sure, but for some reason Washington may have helped him immigrate.
Genet got in by the usual political method…….gold coins. An ancestor of mine and a refugee from his own political mob in Paris.
Washington knew he would be killed if he returned as did others surrounding him. Doubtful that the gold had much effect. Washington was pretty, nearly, incorruptible and he was the one who overall made the decision. It speaks to the enormous grace the man showed to even the worst of his enemies and only adds to his legend.
Without Adams there would be no America. But i do believe he disliked the French. So i wouldnt rule out his bias. 250 years later and im not a big fan of french politics, Or European politics either. Im quite thankful for Adams and our founders. No one is perfect.
Jefferson opposed what Adams did, but then acted in a similar way against opponents.
Jefferson was my least favorite, but redeemed when reading from a lot of different sources and reassessments. Genius, both he and Hamilton were stellar geniuses which really adds to the myth of Washington and his greatness as a leader.
Jefferson was a total hypocrite because intellectually he would be fervent in his belief, but when he translated it to something in his sphere or the practical world he didn’t practice his words. His Louisiana Purchase and his ability to get away from the dogmatic no federal standing army and no foreign engagements so pervasive with his colleagues was essential to our survival. His decision to stand up to the Barbary pirates was courageous as it was admirable, showing his patriotic backbone.
What you say is proof of the old saying: “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” The scandals back then aren’t all that different from today’s scandals.
Moreover, Trump is never going to be allowed to get rid of all the invaders for a very compelling reason. Lost in all the hoopla about illegals invading our country is the fact that the US is the largest purveyor of child sex trafficking in the world.
What that portends is that a lot of rich and powerful people are involved. It’s why no American president going all the way back to Bill Clinton will do anything about it and neither will Trump.
They already despise and hate Trump because he was elected by the American people and not anointed by the American ruling class and their minions. There are limits on how far “they” will let Trump go before they decide to put a stop to it.. If he dares to push past those limits, he most certainly will be “JFK”d.” They’ve already tried twice.
Interfering with the child sex trafficking business is one of the limits. Jeffrey Epstein was “deleted” because of what he knew about the child sex trafficking business and might divulge to save his own skin. He was in prison under 24 hour camera surveillance and was murdered in his cell and no one saw it and it’s not on tape. Imagine what they can do a US president.
We the American people like to think that we run this country. The simple fact of the matter is that we don’t and never have and never will.
Let’s say that I’m worth 50 billion dollars and you’re just Joe Schmo working stiff. Who has more leverage, power and influence?
Very cool. Thanks Daniel !!!!!
Not likely to be a useful tool. The president has to name the war to invoke it against someone since only one of the four parts has not been rescinded and congress has to declare the war. It is more likely to blow up in his face if he uses it, giving reason for an injunction. Trump has the power to do this without invoking the act.
The act has been used for some pretty big abuses, the worst were by Adams :
“According to the National Archives, U.S. authorities used the law to place over 6,000 “enemy aliens” — many of them Germans — in internment camps, with some remaining in detention up to two years after fighting had ended.
The U.S. Marshals Service says it registered 480,000 German “enemy aliens” and arrested 6,300 between the declaration of war in April 1917 and the armistice in November 1918.
Most recently, President Franklin Roosevelt invoked the act after the attack on Pearl Harbor, designating Japanese, German and Italian nationals as “alien enemies” during World War II.
Roosevelt’s proclamation required residents from all three countries to register with the U.S. government and authorized the internment of any alien enemy “deemed potentially dangerous to the peace and security of the US.”
Personally, I think DOA bounties and bounty hunters is a better solution to a persistent and intractable problem.
DOA bounties would disincentivize a lot of central and south American gangsters from coming to this country. Most if not all of them are heavily tatted up and are thus easily identifiable.
.
That’s the problem, do they really want to get rid of illegals or not? I actually handed the same solution as a suggestion to the Trump campaign, suggesting a bounty of 5k per illegal knowing they would probably think the person a lunatic who wrote it, back when I thought Donald wanted to stem immigration, not just do some cosmetic, “we’ll send the criminals back”.
I doubt they read them anyway.
I have the same concerns also. Truth is, illegal immigration could literally be stopped over night if they were honest and serious about. They aren’t because too many people benefit from it. Moreover, I have no doubts that politicians, businesses and the entertainment industry in this country benefit financially and otherwise from the flow of illegal immigration and what comes with it (e.g., drugs, prostitution, guns, etc..)
Illegal immigration generates billions of dollars a year in income for a lot of people on both sides of the border. They’re not going to give that up for the sake of altruism of any kind. Their bottom line is the acquisition of money and all the hedonistic pleasures and material things it affords. People like that don’t give a damn about America or the American people. They never did and never will.
Return all violent Drug Cartels and the rest and return them and Ban them from returning
Drug Cartels callously rob, rape, murder and butcher men, women and children and your suggestion is to not harm a hair on their heads and instead ban them and prevent them from returning?
I suggest that you do not understand the nature of evil nor how to effectively deal with it.
