Even as streamers like Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ are spending almost incomprehensible amounts of money creating the movies and shows fueling the Peak TV wars, the numbers show that audiences are turning down much of that content to watch old television shows instead.
A recent article noted that according to Nielsen, which tracks viewership numbers, “the most minutes last year – more than 57 billion – were spent watching ‘Suits,’ a legal drama that premiered 12 years prior.” The show had more than double the number of viewing minutes than Netflix’s race-swapping woke usurpation fantasy, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.”
The Hollywood Reporter noted that the “top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.” Acquired means the library of older shows that Netflix bought after spending $17 billion on content, much of it on new shows like “Bridgerton” whose three seasons cost $168 million, only to lose to the estimated $200,000 per episode that it paid for “Suits”.
In 2023, more people were watching “NCIS” reruns than the top two streaming programs combined. And more are watching old episodes of “Friends” than either “Ted Lasso” or Star Wars’ “The Mandalorian” despite an estimated $120 million per season budget.
In 2022, Amazon had spent $500 million to buy the rights to Tolkien’s world in order to produce a woke multicultural version of “The Lord of the Rings”, but twice as many people watched “Seinfeld” reruns (not to mention “The Great British Baking Show”) as “The Rings of Power”.
After an unfathomable $238 billion in Peak TV spending that year, most viewers were comfortable dialing up old episodes of “NCIS”, “Criminal Minds”, “Gilmore Girls”, “Seinfeld”, “Supernatural”, “The Simpsons”, and “Heartland”: a show about a horse ranch set in Canada.
The trend continues with Nielsen numbers for this week showing old school shows Suits, NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy in the top 10.
The issue isn’t just “wokeness”. Apart from ‘Heartland’, the old shows that are popular now are not traditional or conservative, but they were generally popular in their own time. Some of the shows were made with a more male audience in mind, a demographic that is no longer serviced by the current streaming industry with rare exceptions like Amazon’s ‘Reacher’.
(‘Reacher’ now ranks as the number two series on streaming, vastly outperforming anything else on Amazon, suggesting that male audiences have been deprived of programming.)
But another issue is a radical demographic transformation in the industry that began with #MeToo and the BLM hate movement. Hollywood made DEI commitments and carried them out, whether it was locking the Oscars behind racial quotas for participating films or dumping white male talent in favor of affirmative action quotas.
Writers Guild of America numbers show that 64% staff writers had been men in 2011, but by 2020, only a third were men. 71% of staff writers had been white in 2011, but less than half were by 2020. Male story editors declined from 61% to 39% while white story editors fell from 79% to 39%. Professional talent at key points in the production chain likewise declined sharply.
By 2020, the number of white producers fell by 24%, the number of male producers by 25%, white co-producers fell by 30%, white supervising producers by 23%, white executive story editors fell by 26% and male executive editors by 27%. The numbers are likely worse now.
While you don’t need to be a white man to write, such a massive industry demographic turnover could not happen without bringing in a whole lot of unqualified personnel for the wrong reasons.
The demands of DEI and the need to produce massive amounts of new content for the streaming wars led to a hiring surge of writers, directors and other creative personnel who were not actually qualified. The impact of that is all around us.
Disney has lost a fortune on movies staffed by inexperienced DEI hires. “The Marvels”, its first comic book universe movie that didn’t even hit $100 million (amounting to likely losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars) was written and directed by Nia DaCosta, hailed as the first black woman to direct a superhero film, with one previous low budget horror film to her name. Her fellow writers had little more than a few episodes of Disney+ Marvel shows under their belts.
“Madame Web”, a recent effort to launch a Spider Man movie franchise without Spider Man, performed even worse for Sony. The movie was helmed by a TV director based on a screenplay originally written by an otherwise mostly unknown minority writer/director, and crashed badly.
The decline of animation quality at Disney has been chronicled in features like Film Threat’s D-Files which put it down to an urgent need to hire new diverse staff while purging the “old white guys” The new diverse hires “understood very little about actual animation and bringing art to life”, and “struggled to succeed at a job they weren’t qualified to have in the first place”. Their ineptitude was blamed on an intolerant workplace and the veterans were forced out.
Something similar has been going on across the industry and no one is allowed to talk about it.
When the editor-in-chief of The Hollywood Reporter proposed a story on how, “those white men who had spent decades writing scripts—which had been turned into blockbuster movies and hit television shows—were no longer getting hired”, he was intimidated into backing away from it.
That was one of the many stories documented in The Free Press‘ coverage which quoted multiple writers and producers, mostly anonymously, describing a DEI culture in which, “suddenly, every conversation with every agent or head of content started with: Is anyone BIPOC attached to this?” Multiple emails contained dismissals such as, “This one a dead end — they are going to limit search to women and bipoc candidates” and “Studio now telling us this job must go to a female / bipoc writer. Sorry — it sucks.”
“I’m all for LGBT and Native Americans, blacks, females, whatever minorities that have not been served correctly in the making of content, whether it’s television or movies or whatever, but I think it’s gone too far. I know a lot of very talented people that can’t get work because they’re not black, Native American, female or LGBTQ,” legendary Chinatown producer Howard Koch said.
Why are shows from the 1990s beating billion dollar projects at Netflix, Amazon and Disney?
One answer is that Hollywood purged or sidelined a lot of its own talent leading to productions that have ten times the cost of their old forebears, but are badly written, acted and directed. A $200 million fan film may make for an impressive trailer, but minute by minute still remain as fundamentally unprofessional as anything uploaded by a random amateur to YouTube.
The issue is not just wokeness onscreen, but wokeness behind the scenes. A lot of the old movies and shows were woke for the level of the time, but they were also competently written, directed and acted by some of the best talent that money could buy. That is no longer true.
Sam Goldwyn, an immigrant and former glove salesman who never learned to speak proper English, yet was responsible for some of the greatest films of the forties, had a simple formula. “You get yourself a great story. Then you get the best writer available. Then you get the best director. Then you hire a first-class cast, the right cast, and a great cameraman.” Not anymore.
Now you get a story that conveys an important socially relevant message about a minority group. Then you get an inexperienced writer from an oppressed group, a BIPOC director who has done nothing except four music videos, a TikTok BLM influencer as your star and a cameraman who is also the only white male on the set and prays all day not to be fired.
What did they know in the nineties and the oughts that no one seems to know today?
TV shows were ‘woke’ ten, twenty and thirty years ago, but the message was, except for some artsy projects, a subtle addition rather than the entire purpose of every single movie and show. Hollywood hypocritically pushed wokeness, but was careful about adopting and internalizing it. And while the upper ranks of Hollywood still mostly consist of white men, the creative talent was fed to the sharks leading to the likes of Disney’s Bob Iger overseeing a sinking DEI ship.
Last fall, Disney was being congratulated for landing Ahsoka, its latest woke Star Wars series, in the number two spot of original streaming shows, but it didn’t even break the top 10 overall. Disney had spent as much as $25 million an episode with more special effects than many movies only to lose to Suits: a show from 2011 with few effects and a budget of $3 million.
The audience had spoken.
I stopped watching anything Hollywood when they dismantled the censor boards in the late 60s. I happily enjoy watching Gilligan’s Island, the Honeymooners, the Dick Van Dyk show and more. Thank God they are still running these things. TCM still runs good old movies, but the woman running it now is a woke black. I avoid it during Black History Month when she runs all the black actor movies. It just goes on and on and on and on.
In the nineties when I was raising my son, I used to tell him if it is in black and white, it is okay to watch. He saw the Honeymooners so many times, he knew all the lines. He thought the show was hysterical, which is was.
People today don’t realize how important those tv censor boards were back in the ’60’s. These boards had Catholic priests as members. Therefore, we never saw nudity or heard the F word like we do today on tv. Funny how some of the tv shows from the ’60’s actually provide a commentary on today’s society. For example, compare Theodore Cleaver’s house, school, neighborhood, clothes, and manners to say, the Oakland, Cal. of today – and then ask yourself, who is responsible for trashing our society and turning it into a sewer – the same type of people who occupy the oval office today.
I seriously doubt the F word is used on network TV but I don’t know for sure because I don’t watch it. To be honest, I don’t even know how although my TV is a Samsung so it’s got to be available. Not that I care.
I don’t think you really want to go there. The modern sacred cows you will gore with the discovery of who was involved in the “the kid-diddling” back then will run you afoul of the alphabet people.
These woke leftist scum TV, movie, and commercial screen writers are depraved and psychopathic.
The garbage they write is not worth crap.
Hollywood writers screenwriters, hosts, actors, actresses, directors and producers have been manufacturing total obnoxious garbage for years.
They are depraved perverts who harm the minds of the impressionable young particularly.
And their commercials are also racist woke crap.
Good point about commercials. They’re much worse than any movie or TV show. All the athletes and scientists are women, 60% of the population is black, MAGA Americans and Republicans are evil extremists, abortion is a “right” and needs to promoted to protect families (derp,) trannies are persecuted but fabulous, and so on.
Woke crap is right.
Gilligans Island Lost in Space Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Gunsmoke Bonanaza Green Acres Beverly Hillbillies Combat The Twightlight Zone The Outer Limits(1963)Night Gallery Etc. the classics
And, Dr. Zachary Smith’s tag line, “The pain, the pain,” can be justly applied today,, living under the Biden regime.
Black history month. What a sick and racist joke. A day isn’t enough for the racists, they want a whole month to celebrate their lack of achievements.
Meanwhile, Washington and Lincoln have to share a single day. America is DONE.
It’s actually black bitterness month.
Or Fuck whitey and society month.
I hereby rename President’s Day to Millard Fillmore Day
DEI woke leftist BLM CRT Hollywood is depraved and psychopathic.
.
Hollywood and its “entertainment” have done tremendous damage to American society and culture and morality over the past 50 years.
American yoots are especially damaged by Hollywood brainwashing and indoctrination.
Hope Hollywood soon goes bankrupt.
Same for the DEI Madison Ave. commercials.
What’s happening in America in this regard happened in Germany when the Nazis imposed their own idea of art. If you weren’t a Nazi, your art was torn down or torn up or put away in a vault owned by Herman Goering. Meanwhile, motion pictures became less and less watchable as they concentrated on Aryanness and Lani Riefensthal homages to you-know-whom.
Next thing you know, the “woke” Dirtbagocrat left will force the overwhelming number of normal people to put all our art and monuments in “degenerate art exhibits,” Nazi fascists that they are.
“…..What’s happening in America today in this regard happened in Germany when the Nazis imposed their own idea of art..”
Very insightful comparison to what is going on politically in America today regarding the DEI mandates and dictatorship. DEI and the NAZI mentality are one and the same.
Hermann Wilhelm Göring and Paul Joseph Goebbels would love DEI, BLM, CRT and the woke leftist depraved psychopathic democrat party.
The communists and globalists certainly do.
Same with Stalin and Mao. That is what totalitarians do.
I agree. My wife and. I watch mostly 40’s to 60’s. We don’t even subscribe to any of the streaming platform. We buy the DVD’s . We don’t even have cable, etc. Not going to enrich the woke idiots.
“ TV shows were ‘woke’ ten, twenty and thirty years ago, but the message was, except for some artsy projects, a subtle addition rather than the entire purpose of every single movie and show. ”
The BBC twenty years ago was like Hollywood is today, we all used to say that the subtle messages came through in Hollywood movies but the BBC was a propaganda machine.
Stop copying the UK. Remember that the BBC is paid for by force.
Yeah, and way back in the early 90s I met some British guys in Mexico who told me the BBC forced Paki shows on the public. That was the first time I heard that term. I said “what’s a Paki?”
lol … the first time I heard the term Paki was in India 🙂
Some of those old TV shows were enjoyable to watch. My favorite was the early Columbo series. Even though there was some subtle leftist propaganda even back then. LA as one would dream it would be.
I bought the Columbo and Perry Mason series on DVD, and though I’ve never watched many sitcoms, I’m watching “Taxi” on streaming. There are a lot of free streaming services, with commercials, out there now, that show the old shows.
I cut the cable over a decade ago, when I realized about the only two stations I was ever watching were AMC and TMC. The nature channels were all preaching AGW, the History Channel was hopelessly slanted, Scifi was all Sharknado and giant reptiles, and the learning channels were all legless midget family ‘reality’ shows
I write screenplays, now at 46, and for the fun of it, I wrote the ending for Columbo, one of my favorite shows. I resolved several issues. I also ended Hogan’s Heroes. Just finished ten episodes of Better Call Saul leading to two episodes of Breaking Bad, both filmed here in Albuquerque with me as an extra on four episodes with two very visible.
I also don’t have cable, so yes, all the old shows, and the main network TV shows with some of them blatantly brainwashing, recruiting, and promoting hate!
Keep writing Mr Chavez. As a former Actress, and amateur scriptwriter, the thing that annoys me the most is the dialogue. Why does nearly every script, sound as if it was written by a 16 year old, “Valley Girl.” Even if the Actor speaking the lines is 50 and a character is in perhaps, 1750….lo,l. drives me insane. I feel as if the adults have left the building. Dumbed down dialogue.
Watching shows supposedly set in the 60s, 70s, 8.0s and even 90s, I often cringe when I hear dialogue using terms and speech patterns of today…but when you have “kids” writing them, it;s understandable. Somebody in continuity should be running the scripts past somebody who actually lived those times. We are not all dead yet! Destroy the credibility of the movie quickly. I have switched off several for just that reason.
A very good question. I think the adults have left the building long ago. Our current crop of films and shows do not seem to be for anyone who has an attention span or reads books.
Agree, this has been driving me nuts for years.
“Breaking Bad and “Better Call Saul?” You got to be on two good shows. Saul was slow and drawn out but still very good.
P.S.,
which “Better Call Saul” episodes did you write? I watched all six seasons, even after that long hiatus it went on. The series had a good ending, too. Tragic but much less tragic than the “Breaking Bad” ending, which was also good. The Badfinger song, “Baby Blue,” was a good accompaniment.
A.I. in Hollywood can manufacture and produce depraved perverted indecent movies that
glorify immorality and criminality and corruption just like the writers and screenwriters
themselves.
Decent people need to reject the garbage that comes out of Hollywood … human produced or A.I. produced.
Don’t forget the directors and producers like Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein.
The Rifleman Chuck Conners and Johnny Crawford just how many shots did he fire in that short time to fast for me to count
I counted those Rifleman shots.
The were 13 shots in rapid succession.
Six days a week my mother starts the day with old cartoons (Popeye, Looney Tunes). At ten at night she watches episodes of Carol Burnett. She really is disgusted by what television and print media are doing today.
Love those old Merrie Melodies from the late 20s and early 30s.
My parents used to watch Columbo and all the other NBC Mystery Movie series while my brother and I were shut up in our room wide awake because we had early “bed times.” Boy was that torture for a grade school kid. I always wanted to watch those shows but the only one I ever saw was “McCloud” when my parents weren’t around, or maybe they set my brother and me free when we were ten or eleven. By the time I was set free I didn’t care much about TV and sure didn’t want to spend time at home.
I still remember the theme music from those shows.
I’m struggling to think of any new TV programmes that I like. Whenever I’ve dipped into Netflix, I can’t find much that I haven’t already seen. Trailer Park Boys. Lilyhammer. The Queens Gambit was a good program, I liked that one. I end up cancelling my subscription before the month’s up, whenever I’ve given Netflix a try.
Elsewhere, I often end up re-watching Battlestar Galactica or the Sons of Anarchy, or things like that. Dexter. Veep was good. What else? Alone. Ice Road Truckers. Expedition Bigfoot. reality/documentary types of programs. And I’ve recently discovered Resident Alien. That’s turning out to be really good.
Do check out Only Murders in the Building wonderful.
Try the foreign TV series on Netflix. Sadly, they’re much better than the current American ones. British, Spanish, Danish, Belgian, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Israeli, Korean and more. Even the production values on them are good. Better stories, by far.
“Resident Alien” the comedy? I’ve been watching that, as well. It is amusing but has it’s share of “woke”.
We watch older programs and movies almost exclusively in our home. While many news sites have been fixated recently with the Google Gemini’s AI being racist against white people, it’s really unsurprising since it was programmed that way, much as what passes for today’s entertainment and our children’s educational curricula.
The really odd thing for me personally is how this barrage of DEI has had an inverse effect on our viewing subconsciously and I hadn’t really noticed it until recently. Across all entertainment genres, our choices have become as segregated as 1950’s water fountains: for WHITES ONLY…and that’s saying something for someone who spent summers in Chicago as a kid. It’s a shame too, for race relations were much better before DEI.
One might even believe that fracturing society is DEI’s raison d’etre. Affirmative Discrimination wasn’t doing the trick quickly enough.
The Wokesters are hoping us boomers die out faster than the actuary tables predict. This will leave the country bursting with indoctrinated citizens demanding entertainment written ,produced and directed by DEI sympathizers.
This is just another iteration of collectivism that misjudges or could care less what the general population wants. In Communist countries, the party members decide what will be watched or read, leaving the silent masses with nothing. Dear Leader wants the party line to be the plot in every word printed, while flyover country wants to watch reflections of the human condition.
Communists prefer to play the long game, especially the Chinese. Meanwhile, the lumpen proletariat will continue to munch on their Doritos while watching whatever is thrown in front of them. The Left will simply bide their time.
Maybe. The DEI stuff is bombing on the so called streaming sites.
I have Amazon on my TV but don’t pay for it. I watched both seasons of “Reacher” on a real streaming website, solarmovies. Even that macho show had chicks beating the crap out of biker gangs and blowing away mercenaries in the second season. The first season was much better. It was set in a corrupt small town instead of all over the map and that made it more interesting.
CBS streaming has “Picard” and I forget which one has “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” They’re OK but only a fool would pay for them when you can stream them for free on the streaming websites. The third season of “Picard” was much better than the first two.
The animated anthology series “Love, Death and Robots” or whatever has turned out to be surprisingly good. I avoided it for years because it looked awful but it isn’t….except for the first episode. Why the creators or producers or whomever led of the series with the worst episode proves those people should be fired. Skip to the second episode, is my advice. That one is quite good. Most of the episodes are only 17 minutes long or less, so it’s not much of an effort to watch them.
And cable is for total fools. Samsung TVs have so much free stuff it’s not even funny
lol …. chicks beating the crap out of biker gangs 🙂
Seriously, those guys have a mean streak, even if they look nice when dressed well. Don’t want to mess with them.
Yeah, That “Reacher” episode was somewhat less than realistic.
There was a bar in the high desert where I used to live on highway 18 just outside of Victorville that bikers used to hang out in. I went there once but didn’t stay long. They didn’t like clean-cut guys like me and I saw some of them eyeing my Honda. Those guys hate all bikes that aren’t Harleys or Indians, I think, and I knew somebody would kick my Honda over or worse. Fuck that shit. Besides, I’m not Jack Reacher or one of his fictional chick buddies so I can’t beat up a bar full of bikers.
I just found out Netflix changed the viewing order of the “Love Death + Robots” cartoons so it’s responsible for putting the worst episode first. It’s actually the only crappy episode I’ve seen so far so naturally it has a sequel in the third season. We all know how stupid the people who run Netflix are and how hiring the Obamas as “creative consultants” or whatever and producing a gluten of “woke” dog shit cost the company untold millions of dollars and stock value because so many people cancelled their service. Even the Netflix problems are shit for brains stupid because they waited until the company nose dived before they went on strike – because they felt the programming wasn’t “woke” ENOUGH! Even the dummies who run the company told them to STFU and go to work or they’d be fired. Ha, ha HAW!
The Obama mockumentary I saw advertised is some bullshit about blacks as being inspirational and wonderful victims and whitey as oppressors, naturally.
Hollywood is evil because it promotes and glorifies and profits on the garbage that it manufactures..
The movie and TV and advertising/commercial producers and directors and the studios know how to
sell evil, indecent, bad, depraved, perverted, and criminal corrupt behavior to the general public.
They know and understand the deep recesses of the human mind and human emotions and attractions.
Hollywood writers and screenwriters deliberately make up and manufacture story lines, dramas and
characters that glorify bad behavior, glorify depraved and perverted behavior,
and glorify criminal behavior.
The famous and attractive movie stars play the roles most often of bad horrible depraved people,
thus seducing the naive and young whose minds and moral sense become warped and susceptible
to evil bad moral behavior that they may and often try to emulate to impress their friends and enhance their self esteem.
Hollywood makes its big money promoting this garbage.
They know and understand the psychological basis and attraction of the garbage movies and garbage TV programs and garbage commercials.
Hollywood and Madison Ave are in the moral garbage manufacturing business..
That is why Hollywood is evil to its core
I would say the talent of yesterday has reaped what it has sowed. Much like we all have and are.
Seeing the line drawn at our feet moved just a couple of inches. “How bad could that be, it’s just a couple of inches.”
We are all and have been masters of our own destruction.
Today instead of the line moving inches it is moving feet at a time.
The increasing degree of the slippery slope you write of Daniel (most excellently I might add) every day should not come as a surprise to any of us.
The talent of yesterday has figuratively shot themselves in their own foot.
I am missing several toes of my own due to my own ambivalence and inaction.
2024 the year for men to take back their balls. It is a dream I have.
I CAN’T STAND MOST OF THE ACTORS who come out with their radical political opinions that are so Far Left that they are active Communists, Closet Communists, and even beyond that… into the Twilight Zone. Take for instance, Robert DeNiro, who I can’t stand.
(I’m an Extra on several TV shows and I was hoping to get called for DeNiro’s movie. He was on a set here in Albuquerque, and a lighting man that I know said that he was a jerk to everyone, and people actually feared him. He hated profiles. I know I would have been fired for my verbal assault on him. He’s actually a psychotic like Alec Baldwin, now on trial in Santa Fe, but the entire justice system, and populace/jury, are Democrats so don’t get your hopes up for any prison time.)
Robert DeNero has made a lot of good movies and is very talented even though he can’t do accents for shit, so it’s kind of disappointing that he’s such an asshole. He hates Trump, too. I hope he’s enjoying Bedenmerica, the prick.
Guy Pearce is a much better actor and he can pull off ANY accent. Australia produces a lot of excellent actors and actresses for some reason. Toni Colette is the best actress in Hollywood, and Joel Edgerton, Robert Taylor, Simon Baker, Russell Crowe and a lot more act circles around most of the Americans in the business.
“Come and listen to a story ’bout a man named Jed/ Poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed/ Then one day he was shooting for some food,/ And up through the ground come a bubbling crude/ (Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea).”
I own that on DVD, lol.
You should look up videos of “The Bel Arabs.”
Many of the old shows had great plots and yes- were almost corny, but were moral and interesting. The last shows Hollywood produced that were interesting were “Monk, Everybody loves Raymond, and Lost. Although, Lost was completely ruined by the imbecilic ending.
Some new shows seem like they may be OK. We started watching one about a private investigator that helps uncover crime and corruption. However- it came to a scene were a police woman and the star were in bed together and the guys mother calls and asks “who is your friend?
Totally without class and never will watch that show again- that scene ruined it. Why do Hollywood writers think a sleaze scene (both men and women) is going to keep viewers?
“Monk” was recently added on Netflix.” It’s one of the most popular shows on there.
Hold on, you think “The Great British Baking Show” is NOT woke and multicultural??
It hasn’t failed despite a huge budget, moron. Work on your reading comprehension.
Also, you really didn’t like “Bridgerton”, did you? Hit a nerve, did it?
The only nerve “Bridgerton” hits is the gag reflex.
Sam Goldwyn more succinctly said, “If you got a message, give it to Western Union.”
It’s not just Hollywood.
DIE is destroying every business who takes it as priority over the quality.
It’s by design, it’s meant to work like that. The goal is ultimate destruction, turning the entire nation into a 3rd world failure.
Yes, majority of the people are too stupid to see it.
Yes, it reminds me of Soros. His pro crime DA and other corrupt politicians are intended to make American society fail. The old fool thinks globalist totalitarians like him can swoop in afterwards and take over.
In India they have a Creation/Preservation/Destruction model of the Universe. I used to wonder a lot about the Destruction part. But now I see, that there is so much evil in the world, that there needs to be a Destructive force to eliminate them. So all the Globalists will be destroyed in the end, like all the evil people in history. I keep reading about that, evil kings and such who got power doing terrible things, but were destroyed in the end.
Yes, eventually the evil rulers, no matter what form they take, either implode or are destroyed by a general population that revolts and goes Shiva on their asses.
The entertainment industry, Hollywood and Madison Ave. are evil depraved psychopathic criminal scum
who prey on children, impressionable young people, and those who lack the capacity to understand the evil and damage being created and distributed and pushed throughout the country through movies, TV, and commercials.
The entertainment industry, movies, TV and commercials are the equivalent of drug pushers.
They foster and promote and celebrate outrageous immoral and unethical and criminal behaviors.
The US entertainment industry has lost its mind.
Good and decent people will eventually have to clean it up.
Meanwhile, take care of yourself, family and friends.
The devil take the hindmost.
The mere fact that “beavis and butthead” are still running should explain the downfall of tv! Shows USED to be clean, decent, FUNNY, and inspiring! As a kid watching “Leave it to Beaver”, “My Three Sons”, and others like that I was INCENTIVIZED to be a clean, respectable little boy! I don’t recall being envious of those kids with the Mothers in Pearls or the suit wearing Dads because the kids did a lot of stuff that we did – they may have had nice homes and stuff, but they weren’t spoiled brats smoking dope and “f-ing” every other word! The LEFT destroys EVERYTHING GOOD AND DECENT! Why are they ALLOWED to continue??
“Beavis and Butthead?” Wow. That shows about 30 years old.
Hollywood, both television and movie sides of the same coin, would have been better off, and made more money, had the writer’s strike continued until all the so-called writers had been forced to find more meaningful jobs, possibly as baristas at Starbucks or french-fry cutters at In-N-Out. I can’t remember when or if I’ve watched any ‘current’ product from Hollywood over the last fifteen years. It is mostly a paean to soft porn, leftist crraapp, forced down our throats (which be may be the same thing) and utterly valueless mind wasting gibberish. I have been going to the library for books for many years and since the pandemic started and picking up quite a few older movies and TV shows that are for the most part very entertaining and have positive messages with which I am able to identify.
Yes, it seems that any modern movie has to begin with someone getting killed, getting laid, or vomiting into the camera. That’s entertainment…
Severql recommendations:
Only Murders in the Building
The Middle (family sitcom)
Bull.
Kids’ show Bluey from Australia.
Obviously you might dislike the odd scene but these shows promote family, loyalty, generosity and humour, the first 2 being actual comedies.
I threw out the TV many years ago, and never watch any of the new stuff they churn out now. I tried Amazon Prime and Netflix, for about 2 weeks each and cancelled. I have a 72tb disk array with all the best TV shows of the 50’s onward and all the best movies, over 1300 of them. The dreck they churn out now is just nauseating and nothing but Marxist social engineering propaganda that the market is rejected but they just keep making it, for what expectation I can’t guess. Well, a fool and his money are soon parted…
Tubi has the best collection of old movies. I recommend Hobson’s Choice 1954 with Charlies Laughton
One of my guilty pleasures is wasting time watching Youtubers chronicle the decline and fall of Disney. My favorites are “The Critical Drinker” ,Nerdrotic and Disparu.
Tubi comes free on Samsung TVs.
I have not watched broadcast TV in over 30 years.
But, I do have on DVDs the complete series of Star Trek, Star Trek Generations, Walton’s, Blue Bloods(favorite), Little House, 24, NCIS and more. None of anything produced in the last 10 years. And no sitcoms but ALF and MASH.
My memory isn’t bad but poor enough that I can watch these over and over.
And then there is reading good books.
I’ve watched the best “Star Trek” episodes at least ten times each. I skip the crappy ones. I think “The Balance of Terror” and “The Doomsday Machine” are the best. “Amok Time” is good too. Theodore Sturgeon wrote that one and Norman Spinrad wrote “The Doomsday Machine.” Real science fiction authors of books and short stories.
Only socialists like Star Trek.
Doomsday Machine Commmedor Decker(William Windom) takes a Shuttlecraft(Einstine) into the Machine to end up dying a most unpleasent death but it was almost always the guys in the Red Shirts that ended up dead
LOVE the “old shows” of my childhood. They were funny, entertaining, and CLEAN! Who says your have to be vulgar to do comedy? I HATE the garbage they are putting out now. It is nothing but smut. Seem no one can write a script that actually engages the MIND instead of elsewhere. I would rather watch a documentary or any one of the videos in my collection. I NEVER go to movies as they are a waste of time and money and I have an extensive library that is much more entertaining. I think that the monetary losses prove the phrase “go woke, go broke”. But if Hollywood wants to continue wasting money…..
My late uncle was a television and movie writer (Everett Greenbaum). He, together with his writing partner Jim Fritzell, wrote many episodes of “The Real McCoys,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “MASH,” and numerous others. He had been a Naval aviator in WW2, had been around, and could be quite vulgar in person. But he NEVER would have even thought of putting vugarity in a script. Thought it was inappropriate and just a cheap laugh. But we have no standards anymore and we are much the poorer for it.
“Return with us now to those thrilling days of censorship..”
When you yearn for the good o[‘ days, remember more than the great dramatic and comedic shows, remember the news shows.
If you read the words of Walter Cronkite or Harry Reasoner or Huntley and Brinkley instead of hearing them, you could not tell who was the author. It was a single opinion, the accepted truths, and nothing else.
The bias in favor of a top-down, government controlled economy was absolutely dominant, far worse than today.
Remember also, that the Twilight Zone, one the finest, most original shows on television, was set in another dimension. Why? Because the writer, Rod Serling said that he wouldn’t be allowed to put those ideas in a realistic setting.
In a free market of shows, you can avoid the junk propaganda. Censoring today, would be done by the people who produce the mind-numbing, insane shows that you abhor. It would be nothing but DIE, LGBTQ++++, “whiteness must be exterminated “, all day, every day with no respite. How else could they get you to watch?
Uh, Walter Cronkite was a lying lefty who said the Tet Offensive was a major victory for North Vietnam and the Vietcong. They lost a million men. Is was the biggest rout in military history, and Cronkite knew it but lied anyway.
I’m afraid that the old TV shows are too dated for me now. I have DVD’s of the first 12 seasons of NCIS but I’ve watched them to death.
I now watch the Scandinavian and European mysteries. If they are woke, it doesn’t show much except most of the leading characters are female. I don’t watch those with BIPOC leading characters except Luther. The only American series i can tolerate is Bosch. The Lincoln Lawyer is barely OK since the Mexican playing Mickey Haller lacks Charisma. The movie with Matthew McConaughey is much better.
Lenin, Marx and Stalin just aren’t funny…neither are their radical students…
Seinfeld, Golden Girls, even Leave it to Beaver were hilarious and still are the greatest entertainment…I will turn off Every political commentary, especially if THEY tell us it is funny..because…it just cannot be…
Hollywood and Madison Ave. actors, actresses, writers, screenwriters, directors, producers, studios, etc.etc.etc.,are depraved pervert leftist woke DEI CRT BLM racist scum psychopaths.
The movies and TV programs and commercials manufactured by Hollywood and Madison Ave are bad,
really bad filthy scatological sexually perverted racist garbage.
They manufacture intellectual and emotional and physical poison for children and the impressionable
young particularly.
And they get rich doing this crap.
Hopefully, they will all go broke … one way or another
Thank you for mentioning Samuel Goldwyn. My favorite producer. In his day, people hired the best and expected their best, without quotas or other considerations. And it made him rich. The fact that modern productions lose so much only verifies the simple truth that when you hire garbage, they give you garbage. And if you want quality, hire quality. Not hard to understand, really.
You know what is a very popular show now? ‘Toon in with Me’ on MeTV. A monday to friday program with a tuna puppet and a cartoon curator that shows all the classic cartoons – Tom and Jerry, Bugs, Woody Woodpecker, etc.
Amusing scripts for Bill and Toony, some interesting segments at places like amusement parks, a doughnut shop (the fish LOVES them), a weekly focus this month on blacks in sports, entertainment, science, etc., which has been educational without beating you over the head.. The guy who voices Toony is hilarious.
I have been watching every morning for the past few years and broke my ‘Fox and Friends’ addiction after November 2020. There are few new shows that I watch anymore.
This week’s episode of ‘The Good Doctor’ – which yeah, has skewed left – really irked me when the decision to appoint a new head of the hospital depended on DEI throughout the episode. Ugh.
Are the old Warner Brothers and MGM cartoons censored? Last I knew they all were.
There’s a old Bugs Bunny Cartoon showing Blacks Picking Cotten then there was this cartoon featured Chinses Mice
I’ve seen worse than that. When I lived in Indonesia I saw a Woody Woodpecker cartoon were black Africans looked like little monkeys with giant lips and swung from jungle trees and vines. The Indos aren’t racist but they sure aren’t P.C. or “woke.” There was a night club called “Bongos” in the city I lived in that was themed on all the worst stereotypes of jungle blacks. Even the place mats for the food had illustrations that looked like the ones in that Woody Woodpecker cartoon.
Warner Brothers cartoons had some questionable stuff although last I knew, the idiot censors got rid of the ones that ridiculed Hitler, Goering and the Nazis. Go figure.
“Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarfs” was a WB parody of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” Coal Black was hot but every other character had huge lips, the Handsome Prince was a pimp in a zoot suit, the evil step mother was a big breasted, big butt, fat armed woman, and the Sebbin Dwarfs looked like comical monkeys. They were all portrayed affectionately but it was more than a bit racially insensitive.
I’d love to play it for every chapter of BLM and watch them go apeshit.
Whoops! “Coal Black and de Sebbin Dwarfs.”
No, man! It’s Trans White and her Bud Light…
What caught my eye … $238 billion for garbage? …
That’s a lot of Lefty cheese.
Kind of explains why our culture is a sewer of anti-everything good …
… Makes one wonder who is in charge …
… but whoever they are …
We can be sure they are not spending their money …
Netflix has “Arrested Development” back on along with “Seinfeld.” I’ve watched most of the first season of “Suits” and it’s 50% entertaining and 50% annoying but it’s enjoyable.
I’m sure not going to watch “Bridgerton,” the black Cleopatra (she was Greek,) black Achilles in “Troy,” or any of the crap that advertises with movie stills of chicks with guns trying to look fierce. And those are the least offensive of the “woke” crap.
The late Irwin Alen made Voyage to the Bottom of t he Sea(Had Episode about Global Warming) Lost in Space(Danger Danger Will Robinson) Land of the Giants(Had Black as a Main Charterer) and Time Tunnel we saw all those shows on a Black & White TV
As long as Hollywood dealt with entertainment, they could produce some quality shows. After they chose politics over entertainment, they produced nothing but garbage. On the other side, although some politicians are gifted as artists, i.e. liars, the outcome is nothing but entertaining.
today i watched marlene dietrich live in sweden 1963 and an interview w ayn rand by mike wallace 1959 – last night was procol harem hosts the midnight special in london w alvin lee 1973 – last movie was night of the iguana (burton, kerr, gardner….huston, t williams)
…let’s see, what else is good….. filmed performances of jazz and r&b greats, live 50s nyc anthologies, ray bradbury, paddy chayevsky, roald dahl, old snls including the music (internet archive) dr kildare ben casey and color versions of andy griffith w howard sprague – oh insight christian anthology quite amazing – endless film noir & camp – why would i ever watch the crp from the last 20 years? (some tv from the 90s is OK including northern exposure) if i want news i watch caroline glick or victor davis hanson ALTHO i do watch morning joe regularly because they lie so well it fascinates me
I haven’t watched prime time TV shows in almost 20 years. I got tired of the weak scripts, profanity, constant sexual innuendos, untalented actors, and stupid plots. Now, I watch classic TV reruns of the 50-60s, YouTube documentaries & history, and classic movies. Walt Disney would crap his pants if he came back and saw what garbage that Disney studios put out today.
I am interested in Tudor history so I was anxious to see the new film on Ann Boleyn. What a surprise when I saw that Ann Boleyn was portrayed as black!!! Watching such a movie would be to get preached at so I hit the off button and returned by my John Guy book on the children of Henry VIII.
